Core Competency Reflection

Over coming the challenge of math and the difficult equations I faced in Pre Cal 12. I spent my time seeking help and getting tutoring in order to understand and learn how to solve complicated math problems, such as logs, functions and more. After seeking the help I needed and working one on one with my tutor i picked up on math very fast. I never gave up even when it was hard and developed tricks to help me make solving the equation easier. Because of my devotion to not give up on some challenges I was faced with, I was able to learn new techniques and skills. I thought I would only use my math skills in math class but I also use them outside of class with helping younger grades with their math and showing them the tricks that helped me. Finally being able to learn to ask for help has helped me in school and outside of school especially with my nail business. This is because when I was new to nails I was nervous to seek the help I needed. Ever since being able to ask for help in classes like math, I was also now able to seek help when needed outside of my school life.

I can identify ways in which my strengths can help me meet challenges, and how my challenges can be opportunities for growth. I have proven this with seeking help, as now when I have a question no matter what it is, I am not afraid to ask for help. This has benefitted me as now my work is much better and I have a better understanding of it, as well as pushing me out of my comfort zone to get help.

Earth Science-

Galaxy Project-

For this project, we made our own galaxy based off all the knowledge we have learnt from the class. I made a galaxy that can support life on one planet, with its own unique solar system. This project consisted of making our main planet, sun, moon, other bodies in the galaxy, other planets and moons and more.

A strength of mine is I’m able to hand in my work on time, and ask for help when needed. I demonstrated this in this project, as I asked for help with questions I was unsure of, and handed it in on time.

A stretch of mine, is staying focus, although I know when I have to get back on task and can manage to get myself back on track most of the times.

I find i work best in group work with my friends, as i can communicate well with them.

Transforming Parabolas-

Equation/Equation Of The Parent Function-

Graph-

The “h” and “k” values in the function, represent the vertex. This is important as it tells you what the vertex is, although the “h” value is changed, as it will either switch to negative or positive when plugged into the function. The “h” and “k” values let us envision what the graph looks like compared to the parent function. My parabola is different from the parent function as the values are not the same. Both consist of different values, because of this they are in different locations on the graph. Both have their own vertex, different axis of symmetry, x-intercepts, their own range and own minimum values. Although they share the same domain of all real numbers. The “h” value is also important as it indicates how far the graph moves horizontally, while “k” represents the vertical shift. And “a” tells us how much the graph stretches or shrinks vertically. Although if “a” is a negative it indicates that the function is then reflected over the x-axis(upside down). The value “k” in my parabola is -1 because of this my graph is lowered by 1. As well as my “h” value is 7 this meaning my “x value for the vertex is 7, these two value make my parabola different from the parent function. Also because my “A” value is 1/2 it stretches my parabola.

Self Assessment-

I used the same strategies to represent my work, I plugged in a number into the “x” value to find the “y” value for both types of functions. This then giving me the values of both “x” and “y”. I was able to state what the vertex was from both functions, and once graphed out, I was able to recognize the domain, range, x intercepts, minimum value, and more. I showed my work for this by graphing out the two functions, and neatly showing the work behind finding different “x” and “y” values for each function.

Beginner Spanish 11 Conversation

Core Competency Reflection-

Communication-

Through out the class, we have learnt how to hold small conversations in Spanish, we have learnt different adjectives, words, vocabulary, pronunciation and the culture. When making this conversation, i found it was limited on what we could talk about within it. This is because we only learnt a small fraction of the language. Although, even though me and my partner faced challenges to over come when making this finial conversation, it was fun and enjoyable. Within our conversation, me and my partner tried to add in details about ourselves.

Personal And Social-

During this project, me and my partner connected outside of school through social media, although we made sure to use our class time to our advantage. We made sure the work was evenly done, and we each had our own sections of it to work on.

BC First Peoples 12-

Through out this semester, we have learnt many traditions, cultural practices, and the history of indigenous people. When I first attended this class, I did not know much about indigenous people and their history, compared to know. We have learnt about the importance in oral story telling through out this semester. We have learnt history of the settlers coming to Canada, where we went in dept about the fur trade. One major thing I remember learning, was about the indigenous women, who helps the new settlers navigate the land. Although, within this class, we have talked about residential schools multiple times. I really enjoyed the small unit we did on them, and watching Sam speak. Sam is a residential school survivor, who came into class to speak about his experiences within residential schools and how it affected him long term. I really enjoyed listening to his presentation, I found it interesting. Overall I very much enjoyed this class, as it was a great opportunity to learn more about indigenous people. I entered the class knowing the basic about indigenous culture, and am leaving it, knowing all about the treaties, residential school, settlers, and more. My view on indigenous people hasn’t changed to much, although my view on how they lived as. This is because we learnt all about their lifestyle which I didn’t know before starting this class, as I only knew the basics about indigenous peoples and their ancestors/history.

Core Competency Reflection

Positive Learner Identity

Taking clear notes, is very important to me because it keeps me organized and helps me manage my work making it easy to find. When I take clear notes I can look back on it makes it easier to take in the information and easier to understand, not only, but I don’t waste time trying to find a topic as all my notes are categorized.

Reflection

I used my note taking skills in science class and socials class the most, I spent time writing short formed notes on each topic with the topic underlined making it easy to find. Because I didn’t write to much about each topic it made it easier to understand and remember. I did this with topics such as World War One/two, chemistry, biology, physic and climate change.

Core Competency

In Mr Peterson metal 11, we are currently doing the metal box. To make the metal box, we use the iron worker and cut up the metal, then we tack the sides together getting a 90 degree angle. Once marked we weld the sides and then grind it down. I so far have no made any mistakes and am comfortable with welding. I did I have a few problems with having 90 degree angles but over all wasn’t that bad.

Core Competencies

Communicating

I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener-

I am able to ask questions, for the novel study project where I had to make a map and write the importance of each section of the map I had to ask many questions. One of the questions, were asking for the criteria on how to do each section of this project. I want to improve with when i ask questions that I am writing down everything that answered the question.

Positive Learning Identify

Asking a question –

I am able to ask questions when I need help, with math, English, etc. I am able to take the steps it takes to understand my work. I am able to learn well when asking for help, I ask for help when I’m un sure of how to do something, or need guidance with something. In English i ask many questions about what the criteria may be for certain projects. In the project I’m doing now on my novel study my job is to go to my teacher and ask her for the criteria.

Nail Salon Linear Equation

A nail salon charges a flat rate per new set of nails. Plus an additional cost per design, they charge $86 for a set with 2 extra designs, its $99 for a set with 3 extra designs.

A) Write a linear equation in function notation to represent this scenario.

B) If my set ended up costing 125.00, how many extra designs did I get?

Self Assessment Section:

Creative Thinking – I love getting my nails done and love getting designs done. I chose this picture because its a picture of my friends nails when we got them done, I love the gems and the shade of green. The gems was a extra design that she got.

Critical Thinking – My information is the rough amount I pay for a acrylic set. I made sure my calculations were the same to what my salon charges me. To get a deeper French tip that is harder to do, making it a extra 10-15 dollars, which is a extra design. For my current set I have a glitter line on each nail which cost me a extra 10-15 dollars. I made sure my calculations would work by making sure each extra design would be worth the same value.
