Essay on The Crucible

We are going to figure out how to truly understand characters found within the crucible. One must only use Kohlberg’s moral perceptions as a vehicle to assist us in understanding these characters’ motivation and behaviors. In this. Kohlberg’s moral perceptions will be used as an explanation, Kohlberg has three moral perceptions that describe the motivations people go through when deciding on their behavior. The three levels are: pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional. We can gain a clearer understanding of the characters in The Crucible and the complex motivations driving their actions.  These three steps occur chronologically through an individual’s life, this offers a valuable perspective for analyzing how the characters navigate the intense moral and social pressures of the Salem witch trials. This approach allows us to explore how their decisions are influenced by self-interest, societal expectations, and a higher sense of morality or justice. One way to analyze these motivations is by identifying pre-conventional characters in The Crucible.

Pre-conventional characters behave in a way that avoids punishment and obtains a reward. One of these pre-conventional characters would be John Proctor; he exemplifies a pre-conventional character because of the scene where he is talking to Elizabeth Proctor his wife and she is trying to convince him to go to court and tell them that Abigail Williams is lying about it all having to do with witchcraft and John Protectors response was “I’ll think on it”. This shows that he is in fact a pre conventional character because he trying to avoid the punishment of lechery if the court or anyone found out that he had an affair with Abigail he would be completely ruined there for he is willing to have many women sit in jail from Abigail’s false accusations even when he can stop the trails if he went and told the court it’s fraud but that would make him have to tell the court about the affair he had with her. Another character that does something to avoid punishment and receive a reward would be Mrs. Putnam. She demonstrates this when Tituba is listing off people that she saw with the devil and when she finally said Mrs. Osbuns name, Mrs. Putnam instantly said I knew it she was a mid-wife to me three times “my babies always shriveled in her hands.” Mrs. Putnam was helping in questioning Tituba because she wanted to get the bottom of how her babies died either during or shortly after birth. She wanted someone to blame and therefore everything she was doing up till Mrs. Osburn’s name was said was to achieve the reward of closer and understanding and to be able to blame someone for her children’s death, she does not understand that natural causes and is grieving so badly she needs someone to blame. And finally, the last example is Reverend Parris. Parris says “you cannot hang this sort there is danger in it for me I dare not step out at night” to Hale because he no longer wants to proceed with the hangings due to the fact people have started to threaten him. Reverend Parris is a very pre conventional character. He only cares about himself and what he wants the reward he is looking for is his life and the punishment he is trying to avoid by stopping the hangings is the death that could happen

However, there are post conventional characters found in the crucible, post conventional characters balance in a way to fit into a group. A conventional character would be Mary Warren. When being questioned by the court and being brought upon the court she decides to be honest and says “I thought I saw spirits” the reason Mary warren says this is because she wants to fit into the group of girls who are claiming they also saw them. This goes against what she believes, and she knows she is not supposed to lie, however she believes that it is better to follow them and claim she saw spirits than be outed for lying or going against Abigail in fear of what might happen to her. Another character that tries to fit into a group is Elizabeth protector, the group she tries to fit into is being a good Christian. John protector says “that woman never lies” when Hale claims that Elizabeth is pregnant. Elizabeth wants to be a good Christian meaning you cannot lie if you believe in God if you do then you can be cast to hell, and she does not want that to be burning for all of eternity. That is why Elizabeth Protector is a conventional character because she is doing all this just to fit into the group of good Christians. The final example is Abigail Williams when she says, “I saw Serah good with the devil” Everyone was confessing to the court who they saw with the devil because the devil is never seen with just one person. Abigail wanted to be apart from the people confessing so she herself could be considered safe and not have the court believe that she was with the devil herself.

Finally, there are post conventional characters found within the crucible, post- conventional characters have two senses of values and beliefs they are not influenced by punishment, reward, and group acceptance. Hale is a post-conventional character due to the fact he says, “I quit this court.” Hale quits the court shortly after he couldn’t get the hangings stopped, he does not care for punishment or reward or trying to fit into a group his beliefs are straight that witches do not and will never exist and that every woman convicted of witchery is innocent and the court has gotten way to out of hand and he doesn’t want to be part  of the Salem court anymore. Another character that strongly believes in what he believes in Giles Corey he would not answer ay or nay to the indictment given to him and instead said “more weight” this demonstrates his own belief of staying silent and not telling the truth that he isn’t a wizard or lying that he is because either way he dies and his land does not go to his sons and he wants and this also shows that he rather die a silent man. The last example is John Proctor. When Danforth is questioning him and wanting to sign his name Proctor says, “I have given you my soul, leave me my name” His decision to stand firm in keeping his name untarnished, even at the cost of his life, highlights a profound moral struggle. Proctor’s refusal to sign a false confession is a powerful manifestation of his adherence to personal integrity and his understanding of what it means to be a good man, despite the pressure to conform. His moral journey, from initial reluctance to rejecting the court’s demands, mirrors Kohlberg’s higher stages of moral development, where the focus shifts from mere obedience to authority to an internalized sense of justice and personal responsibility. Proctor’s choice shows his belief that maintaining his moral identity is worth more than survival, demonstrating a commitment to his own ethical principles over societal expectations.

In conclusion, applying Kohlberg’s moral precepts provides us with a more in-depth perspective to understanding the motivations and behaviors of the characters in The Crucible. By categorizing their actions according to Kohlberg’s stages of moral reasoning  pre-conventional, conventional and post-conventional we can  better grasp how personal morality interacts with societal pressures, Ultimately, Kohlberg’s moral perspectives offer a meaningful way to analyze the complex ethical choices made in The Crucible, shedding light on the broader human condition of grappling with right and wrong in times of crisis.

Squid dissection

Personal Social

I can persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning and behavior. The first challenge was the initial discomfort of handling the squid—it was slimy, cold, and had a distinct odor that made some of my classmates uneasy. However, I reminded myself of the educational value and pushed through. Throughout the process, I learned not only about squid anatomy but also about perseverance and resilience. Each step required concentration and determination to overcome any squeamishness or uncertainty. By the end of the dissection, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of biological systems. Reflecting on this experience, I realized that challenges like dissecting a squid are opportunities for growth. They teach us patience, problem-solving skills, and the importance of pushing through difficulties to achieve our goals. This experience has since encouraged me to approach challenges in other areas of my life with a similar mindset of determination and ownership.

Communication

I can represent my learning and tell how it connects to my experiences. Dissecting a squid in school and scuba diving may seem different at a glance, but both activities share a need to explore, understand anatomy, and overcoming challenges. Both activities require a strong sense of curiosity and a drive to learn. Just like I needed to understand the anatomy of a squid during dissection, scuba divers must familiarize themselves with the underwater environment and the behavior of marine organisms to dive safely and responsibly. Both activities foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world, and dissecting a squid allowed me to gain insight into its biological functions and adaptations. Scuba diving provides firsthand encounters with marine ecosystems and their inhabitants and allows me to explore an unusual part of our earth. These two topics are linked through my passion and curiosity of both and my wish to pursue learning in both.

Thinking

I consider more than one way to proceed in an investigation. Approaching the dissection of a squid with a mindset that considers multiple approaches is important in navigating the difficulties of this task. By contemplating various methods before dissecting, such as looking at anatomical diagrams, discussing strategies with my friends, and seeking guidance from my teachers, I can show thorough understanding of squid anatomy. During the dissection itself, remaining flexible and calm allows me to adjust my dissection techniques based on the specimen, ensuring a full exploration of the required structures. Learning multiple ways to proceed not only helps a deeper learning experience but also develops my problem-solving skills as I navigate through the difficulties of Bio 11 dissections.

Tritations

chemistry 11

Curricular Competency Explanation

A tritration is process where we use a concetrate of a known solution to determian the concetration of an unknown solution. The titration used for this certian lab is to use the data found while doing the tirtation to calculate the molarity of the hydrochloric acid. An endpoint of the tritation is where it is a solid bright colour, the equivelnce point is the middle ground where the colour is light. Once the endpoint as been achieved the colour change is permanent. The results of my tritaton were 0.11ml for all the intial volumes of NaOH, the final volume was 12.46ml for trail 2 and 12.45ml for trail 3. We uses 12.35ml of NaOH in trial 2 and 12.34ml NaOH trail 3. The average volume of NaOH achieved was 12.45ml. I calculated the molarity of HCl by figuring out the moles of NaOH then the intial moles of HCl, which gave me the molarity of 0.1245 HCl.

Core Competency Reflection

I can use evidence to make judgements or decisions evidence of the lab that we did. The notes I took in class help me accomplish my end results in the titration and allowed to to make decisions on whether or not I was getting closed to the end of tghe tritration or just making sure I had all the correct volumes meausred out. Critical thinking was a big part of this lab and so was collabration because we were working in two’s, this lab was also very tedious to do and needed patience.

Where the blood mixes

Describe Mooch’s character

There are multiple examples within the play that shows the character of Mooch. It is distinct from the story that he is a complex character. Early in the story we learn that Mooch is a thief and dishonest Mooch shows this when he says “I’m not stealing June’s money” everyone knows he is, and he promised June that he would not steal her money anymore. June does nothing but provide for her and him, but he just takes her money and spends it all in the bar with Floyd. However, mooch is benevolent, you see this when Floyd is asking where mooch put him when he was drunk. “I put you out back in between those two garbage bins so you were covered and would not get rolled” Floyd was passed out and mooch was looking out for him and did not want him to get rained on or robbed from so he just put him out back. Mooch just wanted to protect him because he worries about his friend and loves him. Finally Mooch is a jealous person. For example, mooch comes out of the bathroom and sees Floyd hugging June. You see his jealousy when he says, “so you are taking my girlfriend away from me now?” he did not want to know what was going on and he just assumed that June was cheating on him which led up to the fight mooch and Floyd had because he was jealous. Mooch let his jealousy get the best of him. To conclude it shows that mooch has both negative and positive attributes to his character.

This is a image of a group lab.

I can work with others to achieve a goal. I show that I value feedback from others in my group by asking them what they think and what we could to improve on. Working with others to achieve a goal in the group is easier then trying to complete by yourself because have the extra help and being able to ask them questions and just bounce idea’s off of one another helps to achieve the goal faster. knowing feedbback from the other people in your group is neccesary and helps get the groupwork or project done faster, everyone in a group has a voice weither they use it or not i think everyone would acomplish more if everyone used their voice for this project me and my friend wdid a bouncing ball lab basically dropping a bouncy ball from different hights and we callobrated our ideas and if somthing didn’t go right we talked to eachother about it and figured it out and that helpped us get the best mark possible because we did everything to the best of our abilitys

i use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstarted in this artifact i chose. this was a project where i had to think about what i needed to add and what i already had. I also had to do calculations in this and show how i did them which is my evidence to make the judgements of the answer. I can contribute to and work with criteria to imporve on my own work, i always take the criteria into consideration when im doing the assignments so i know what is being asked of me for this project i have read over the criteria and am using the critera to help me do it so i can get the best marks possible I remain open minded as i explore viable options or alternative approaches like when I get stuck I tend to think of all the possible answers to the one question and try and see if i can do it but if i cant i take a step back and try and look at it differently to see if i can get the correct answer that way. One of the main goals I’m working on acedemically is asking help when i need it and know when im struggling so i can get help my support network is helpful to me because they know when I need help and are very open to helping me even if the problem is simple. to achieve this goal will identify when i need help and ask for it instead of just sitting quietly and pondering the question.

Critical and reflective thinking

Artifact: reflection

The artifact that I chose is a reflection I did for a black and white silhouette project. I can reflect on my work and experiences and tell others about something I’ve learned, in the reflection I was able to talk about what I learnt doing this project and during the lessons, and I also reflected on my own work by saying what worked out while I was taking the photo and the planning for it and what I wish I did differently for taking the photograph. I was able to also share my experience taking the photo and all the problems I did run into and how I solved them to get the photo I needed. I also reflected on the photoshop portion of the project in the reflection.

Artifact: group dialog.

This artifact is from a group dialog that we did together. Everyone’s feedback is what helped us collaborate with each other and we took the feedback from each other into consideration we also shared our ideas with each other. My group communicated well with each other and if we got stuck we tried to sort it out and do it on our own before asking for help. Creative thinking was used a lot in the project. An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when someone said that we should do this activity in the dialog and then I built upon that idea adding more to the story. I used critical and reflective thinking in this project by looking at the criteria and figuring out how I can meet the full criteria and looking at all the things we needed into the dialog and making sure they were all there

Core Competency Goals

My first goal is to act on feedback that I have recived from my teachers to further my understanding, make my grades better and I will try to communicate to my teachers a helpful form of feedback so I can be successful in their classes. I also need to ask for feedback more often in all of my classes to know where I am and if I need to make more of an understanding on the assignment.

My second goal is to recognize my emotions when im struggling in class and ask for help to find strategies to regulate them because I tend to lose my focus in class easily and have a hard time regaining it, I also tend to get frustrated with my work once I dont understand it which causes me not want to do it but all I need to do is ask for help to get back on track.

My third and final goal is to continue supporting my friends and other people around me. I always support my friends and my peers when they need it, if thats when they are struggling with something or are making decisions thats what I’m here for to support them in all the ways I possibly can and I want to continue doing that.
