Slinky Lab

In our groups we were supposed to tape a slinky to the table and track its wave patterns. Group work was important for this project because it was difficult task, and collaboration was important because we all had different levels of understanding. As you can see from my work, I am aware of the distinction between collaboration and straightforward “group work.” When my group ran into trouble, I worked with other groups in addition to talking and solving the issues within my own. When flustered I thought of solutions for our group that would continue our research.    In this lab, we had to sort everything out amongst ourselves, thus it was a perfect opportunity to practice my groupwork and critical thinking skills.

Metalwork

critical thinking is an important skill to have when working with metal. I use my critical thinking skills everyday when working to figure the best solutions for problems i encounter. For my vase project there were things that well and things that didnt. Things that well were the brazing on my vase i used a small washer to cover up my messy welds. What i learnt is that to always check that your gas and to make sure the setting on the micweld are correct. Because the mistake i made was forgetting to turn on the gass which resulted in my welds being hallow and looking quite strange. However i solved this problem by sanding down the ungased welds and redoing the welds on top which went well. Another that i used my critical thinking skills y was that when welding my spider legs wit was hard to get them to stand up correctly which i welded, but i solved this problem by using a magnet underneath so the metal legs would stick to it and it became really easy to weld. I also used a full circle too, instead of small curves to make the spiderweb. Overall im happy with my project.

Criminal Justice

Should our criminal justice system be more punitive or rehabilitative? Why?

Personally, I think it really depends on the crime and the offender. Because punishment is a very powerful tool and when its inflicted in the wrong circumstance it could do more harm than good. Many inmates aren’t evil people; rather, they were put in bad situations. For instance, let’s say an 18-year-old was charged with armed robbery, but they only committed the crime because they had nothing to eat. Although I am aware that some people have committed terrible atrocities, I think the best course of action for the majority is to concentrate on rehabilitation.

I can analyze my own beliefs and consider views that do not fit with them.

Although my view is to focus on rehabilitation, I still understand other people’s point of view. Although I have never been through the situation myself I understand the pain inflicted upon the families of victims when punishment isn’t being forced. I know that for some families it might feel as though no sense of justice had been retrieved.

Core competencies

I can identify and describe my qualities using words that I feel fit me

I can identify my strengths and identify my potential by understanding myself and what I’m passionate about

I can tell what is important to me and I can explain my values through talking about my background and what’s important to me

I can understand that my identity is made of many interconnected elements such as my culture, hobbies, family, friends.

Core Competency Goals

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include looking for the needed information in history books, articles, and videos.

If there is disagreement within a group, I find it helpful to communicate where we disagree and try to settle for a solution in which we all agree on.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is listening to music because it helps keep my mind creative but also focused.

My Future Career

I wish to pursue a science field after secondary school. I thought that would be a successful path for me to take because I’ve always grasped the many components of science extremely well. I intend to attend UBC because I have visited the campus and have fallen in love with the environment and believe it is a place where I may thrive. I’m currently considering pursuing a career in nursing, which will include knowledge of chemistry and biology, as well as physics. My objective is to continue with physics and biology next year, then switch to chemistry and biology in grade twelve.

Core Competency Reflection

Critical Thinking

I can analyze evidence before making judgments.. When I was thinking on which road to follow for my project, I did this. I went off of the facts from the previous few years of what I had been most successful at.

Creative thinking

I deliberately learn about things that pique my interest or jump into my mind. I did this because when I was creating my future plan, I considered what campus I would be most interested in by considering my interests and clubs that I would like to join.

Critical and reflective thinking

I can ask open ended questions to gather informational can ask open ended questions to gather information. The discussion of my future career led me to ask my family what they believe I’ll do after high school. This encouraged me tremendously in devising a strategy for the future.

Working on

I consider more than one way to proceed in an investigation. This is something I’d like to focus on because there are times when I make decisions without realizing there are other possibilities.

The Simpsons

Creating and communication

This unit helped me break down the different types of humor that I would never think about when watching the show.

I used a scrap piece of paper to brainstorm my ideas before writing it down, this helped me create a structure and better understand what was going on. At times it was hard to express my ideas but i really tried to create a structure and different points to their popularity.

Core Competency Reflection

I can describe how satire, irony and/or allusion relates to (make a connection to another text or show). I did this when I described an allusion from the episode we watched when they used one of Scooby-Doo’s popular references as evidence to my statement.

I seek, develop and weigh options as demonstrated by the importance to the thesis. I tried to find the best evidence to support my original statement to prove why The Simpsons is one of the greatest shows.

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this when I talked about Homer having childish characteristics then gave the example of him not going to church.

Minecraft Project

Our project and what is it was..

Our main type of renewable energy source was electric kinetic energy. We built a hydro dam, hydro dams convert the potential and kinetic energy of water to electrical energy, they do this by using a turbine and a generator. We also explored other renewable energy sources such as solar panels which use sunlight as source of energy and generates it into electricity.

Creative Thinking

We really tried to push our abilities and think about creative ways to go about this project. This was demonstrated when we built a basketball court to highlight the key differences between kinetic and potential energy.

1. How effectively did your group work?

Our group continued to work very well with each other. In class we would share our ideas and brainstorm a good plan. Outside of class we would make sure to stay in touch and continue communicating with each other. The only difficulty would be how all of us missed school on different occasions so it was hard to get back on the same page.

 2. Were the behaviors of any of your team members particularly valuable or detrimental to the team?

I think each person in our group had their own skills which is why we were a good a team. For example one person would be very creative with our layout, the other person would have a lot of knowledge about gaming and building, and someone else would help put our ideas together.

3. What did you learn about working in a group from this project that you will carry into your next group experience?

I think that communication is defiantly the most important part of working as a team. I will make sure to keep in mind to express my ideas and to listen to my group members thoroughly during a project.

Digital footprint

Self reflection

Some ways i like to build/maintain online reletionships are by facetiming, calling, and texting on apps like snapchat and instagram. Eccpecially now with covid its alot harder to have face to face conversations so the fact that you can talk online and check in really helps.

Some short/ long term goals with my digital spaces include spending less time on social media and trying to maintain my privacy so I never have to worry about it in the future ,my plan to achieve them is by setting a limit for myself on how much time i spend on social media like 1 hour, and posting as little as possible, avoid oversharing, and getting stronger passwords.

I know that my digital footprint can have both positive and negative consequences, including affecting future school and job offers, but also keeping in touch with people and connecting with the world. so I adjust my actions by really take a few seconds to think about what I’m posting/doing online to avoid problems in the future.

Media Fluency Reflection

Name of the town: Greyfordville

Company Name: Quicksliver wool co.

Resources available: wool, wheat

Elements of the town: Big factory , large garden, small complex near factory where residence stay

Population: 1, 802

Explanation / Brief History: This town is located in eastern England since the early 1800s, most residence work at the factory where they spend most of their day making wool, its a very fast pace job. However people that are too young to work in the factories work in the garden where they grow wheat. Then after a long day they had back too their complex which is where almost all of their wage goes too, the rest goes too the little amount of food they can get near the complex.

A. How was the ease of access in building the town, and what software did you use specifically?

It was difficult at times because it would glitch out at times and not work, it was also hard to save. I use the website City Creator

B. Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?

Yes I kind of had an idea of what i wanted to look like and took the steps to figure out how to do it.

C. What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” town?

I searched up images of towns looked back in the day, i also learnt from Lyddie what a town would kind of look like from their daily experinces.

D. Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Explain

Not really I think the website I used did a pretty good job.
