Curricular Competencies Reflection

I demonstrated the aspect of create and communicate competency. Throughout this assignment, I learned how to analyze characteristics such as speech, thoughts, and actions. These literary elements of characterization ultimately enhance and shape meaning and impact. My character infographic indicates my growth in writing and representations skills. I was capable of showing my critical and insightful understandings of the character and the text in a create way, which indicates a deep analysis in my writing. The story “Mountain Legend” allowed me to learn a strong connection between Indigenous peoples and the ancestors. The stories and oral traditions play a crucial role in depicting the close relationship with nature in terms of preserving Indigenous cultures.

Core Competencies Reflection

Personal Social CC:

I can show a sense of accomplishment and joy. I take pride in my work and myself. I read the Indigenous story “A Mountain Legend,” by Jordan Wheeler in class. I analyzed how the main character, Jason, developed his identity as Indigenous and organized my thoughts in the infographic. I first used the Canva tool to make the infographic, so it took some time to be organized. It was quite fun to choose the template for the infographic with regard to the background of the story and design the graphics.

Thinking CC:

Completing this assignment required a creative process as well as gathering information. I thought about how I will represent my ideas in a creative way. I thought about which colors and themes would fit with the content itself. I included images that reflects the text and enhances both the visual aspect and the information. I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is the infographic. I organized the elements: characters’ appearance, speech, thoughts, actions, reactions, and surroundings, by finding evidence from the story and writing personality traits. I grew my writing and viewing skills by examining the characters and themes and writing a paragraph.

Communication CC:

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. I discussed the purpose and the summary of the story. I shared my thoughts about the story. The purpose of this story is to consider and think about the effects of mistakes before carrying out a plan.  This is because Relph coaxed Jason to climb a mountain to become a warrior because Jason is Indigenous, and Jason decided to climb a mountain. Consequently, he got into trouble and almost fell to death. I also listened to others and recognized various thoughts through communication. I gathered ideas and information that showed my learning. I represented the ideas into an organized form to be more clear. During the process, I thought carefully about the wording and the information I am going to share. I used creative ideas and methods to make the infographic look appealing and neat. I added visual representations that connects to the content and text.
