Music Monday “LAND” Map Assignment: Self- Assessment

Curricular Response

For this map assignment an image I choose was one of a boat travelling in the sea accompanied by the quote, “If you ain’t an Indian, fool, then you really ain’t American,” (My land by Litefoot). The reason I choose the boat image was to represent the arrival of other people. This arrival was to display colonization and how Indigenous people where on the land prior to any one else. Another image I used was of a city skyline and the quote, “replaced all the greenery with concrete buildings,” (My Land by Litefoot). The reason I choose the image of a city skyline was to show in a literal sense the changing aspect from greenery to concrete.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

When completing this assignment, I first struggled with selecting the appropriate quotes to use. I was able to overcome this by thinking about the quote’s connection to the song, how different binary opposites could apply and recognizing the more valuable significance to some words than to others. It was also difficult to create a clear image that could display what I had in mind. Typically, English assignments focus on the writing aspect, but this was challenging as my chosen drawing had to convey what I wanted to say. I overcame this struggle by finding keywords within the quotes and relating them to my drawings.

Communicating

Due to this assignment being a speaking assessment, communication was essential to guarantee everything was completed in time and that the class could understand what my video was about. I effectively used communication as I talked with my partner and guaranteed everything was filmed properly. Communication also helped ensure that no lines of the script were forgotten and that the soup was made properly as me and my partner checked everything over with each other. Next time I will work on my pronunciation and grammar so that I can be more accurate in showing my learning and more understandable.

Core Competencies – Chemistry 11

Communication: Collaboration

This was the acid-base lab. I worked together with a partner during this lab which is where collaboration was shown. Collaboration was very important during this lab as we needed to be able to complete the lab in time while still performing it accurately. We did so by splitting up the work of the lab so all the equipment was prepared before the actual process of the reaction we were completing started. We also displayed collaboration as one person would be recording and the other performing the lab to make sure all observations where completed well. This process was then switched so each partner had a turn doing the experiment and recording. Next time improving on more communication to ensure that there is no confusion.

Show and Tell Presentation Reflection and Self- Assessment

Curricular Response

A slide from my presentation on the fear of hospitals

The greatest strengths of my presentation was how I presented. In my presentation I was able to talk about a well known phobia and why phobias exist while also connecting my presentation to moments in movies. This helped give an example of why this fear is commonly felt and then how it is represented. The next time I complete a presentation of this style where one chooses their own topic and has a lot of leeway within the guidelines I would change some things. In the future I will set better deadlines throughout working on similar projects to make sure I keep on track with my work. I would also put in some more scientific research and connections which will showcase similarities and contrasts clearly.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

My topic for “Show and Tell” was the fear of hospitals and I chose this topic quite randomly. I had just recently been in and out of a lot of hospitals and while I may not fear them it made me think of some binary opposites which made the topic intriguing. I also was just aware that hospitals and death are a common fear so I thought it may be a good choice of topic as it could be relatable to many people. The strategies I used to collect relevant information were pretty basic. I looked at multiple sources and different kinds of media to make sure I covered all different kinds of information. I also compared different sources to make sure the information was relevant and good.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility with the Curricular Competency of Evidence

An image from my project on the Democratic Republic of Congo and their need for help from the Move4Mana program

I have chosen personal awareness and responsibility as my core competency because I felt that the main focus of this project was awareness of other countries and the world. Throughout the project I used many news sources and articles to learn about the DRC as a country and how Canada has helped with the many past and present crisis’ of the DRC. Responsibility was a key piece of this project as the project’s purpose was to present the DRC to be the chosen country for this year’s Move4Mana project. Me and my partner analyzed the contributions Canada can make to help the DRC through research on what Canada has already done and what can now be contributed by the school through projects like Move4Mana. In the future getting more insight into official government policies and records would help build a better understanding on the ruling of the DRC which would further my own awareness on how the country can be helped. Another thing I believe would have helped this project is if I were able to connect my supporting evidence more often to the case of malnutrition and Move4Mana and a strong point of this project was the evidence on human experience within the DRC

Me and my partner both developed our evidence finding skills for this project as we used reliable sources to research, analyze and interpret information while keeping the information relevant to the main purpose of the project. This was achieved as for this project a range of sources was used, from videos to online articles. To keep the information relevant editing was used to ensure that the evidence was clear, concise and overall well communicated. In the future I would attempt to give more time for editing to make sure that all the information used can play a better role in connecting back to the main purpose of the project.

Collaboration

During the Movement in the earth Project me and my partner Keira used collaboration skills. This project me and Keira split up work by sourcing different articles inputting them both formulating notes and then using collaboration to bring our notes together and make a script. We had a clear goal and were able to communicate clearly together to complete the assignment by the due date. Next time I believe we should work on our time management and focus when given in class time as we were able to meet the due date but just barely. For curricular competencies we used inquiry and evidence to gather information. We were able to do this as we gathered information from websites, sited them properly, edited and made sure we applied reasons to the evidence to create an effective presentation.

Core Competency Goals

  • Personal Awareness and Responsibility:

I plan to work on refocusing this and next semester. I often struggle to complete tasks and homework as I lose focus which causes me to procrastinate. Working on this will help me complete assignments on time. I plan to achieve this goal by making sure I am in a quiet environment to study and do not have my phone or any distracting items around.

  • Collaboration:

My goal for collaboration is to ensure when in group projects/assignments the group has a clear focus and goal. It is easy to become distracted during group assignments with many people and focusing on this goal will ensure that the group does well. I plan to achieve this through making plans and reading instructions thoroughly.

  • Communication:

My goal to improve communication is to make sure the information I gather is clear and concise without being lengthy so that I am easily understandable. I find in English my main flaw is making work to long so I will work on this through careful editing and review.

Comparative Cultures – Final Reflection

Critical thinking and communication

This project was a focus on creation myths. I compared and contrasted Hawaiian and Māori myths to form this project as one can see in the image above. This assignment allowed me to showcase my communication skills through using notes to create a script which effectively communicated what I needed to showcase for the project in the small space given. I used critical thinking as I analyzed the two cultures to effectively communicate the information I had. I am proud that I was able to complete the assignment on time and showcase all the information needed on this comic. In the future I wish I had spent more time on the analysis piece as I was unsatisfied with the fact that I was unable to have a greater focus on perspectives and wish I had tied the effect of enculturation more into the analysis. This project was overall able to help me look at my analyzing and clear communication skills to asses information which allowed me to improve both these skills.

English 11 Poetry Reflection

My Poem

This is a poem I created on strawberry fields.

Curricular Competencies Reflection:

For this poem, the only audience I had in mind was my teacher Ms. Khokar and the basic purpose of the poem was to complete the assignment, but a more in-depth purpose of this poem was to express my own experiences creatively. All elements of this poem are related to me personally as going strawberry picking was an activity that my family always participates in. The way I have written my poem is so that the 3 stanza’s each have a different part of the journey of the strawberry picking. In the first the environment is set, and the strawberry fields are described. Then the second stanza is the process of picking and gathering the berries. In the final stanza it describes taking the berries home and the process of making things with the berries for consumption. In arranging my poem this way, I hoped to engage anyone who reads it by using a concise timeline. Another way that I planned my poem to be engaging was through imagery. In this poem I use poetic devices like alliteration, personification and similes in the hope to create a vivid image for the reader.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection:

I chose this topic for my poem after being reminded about memories of strawberry picking when a book review mentioned it. I knew right away that because strawberry picking was something I had personal experiences with I would be able to center a poem around the process. To develop and draft the poem I looked at some images of strawberry fields so I could accurately portray the fields with creative imagery and called on some memories of picking strawberries in the past so I could relate close experiences in the poem. This poem was more innovative and different from the ones I have written in the past as it focused on one item and its growth. In the future I hope to improve on incorporating more poetic devices inside my works. I will do so by having my poetic devices list beside me and using a checklist to make sure I use more poetic devices in my next poem.
