Cooking At Home #7 (Family Tradition)

I made a dish called Kheer for my Family Tradition. Kheer is pretty much rice pudding, it consists of rice, milk, and nuts. Kheer is a very popular Indian desert that many people make. Kheer is made by boiling rice with milk until it gets thick. Many people add stuff into it such as nuts, coconut shavings exc. It’s usually sweet and thick and tastes amazing. Kheer can be served hot or cold it doesn’t matter but is usually served hot. This tradition started in my dads side of the family. A few times every winter my grandma would make Kheer for my dad and his siblings, ever since then she’s been making Kheer when it’s around winter time. My grandma told me they say Kheer served in the winter tastes best especially when it’s warm. I’ve always liked my Kheer cold I don’t know why. The best part of this tradition is that we get to eat Kheer a lot when winter comes around. A challenge I faced while making the Kheer was that it was taking very long to get thick but I was patient and waited until it got to the perfect consistency. I learned that patience is the number 1 step while making Kheer. After I got the Kheer are thick I decided to add chopped up nuts, such as cashews, almonds and also added some coconut shavings. I’m really happy how the Kheer turned out because it tasted just like my grandmas Kheer. I’m proud that I learnt how to make Kheer and eventually could carry on this tradition in the future.

Cooking at Home #6 (soup)

I decided to make tomato soup. I’ve always made broth soups so this time I wanted to make a puree soup. I found an easy recipe to make tomato soup online. I had all the ingredients at home for it so I decided to use that recipe. I started off by gathering all the ingredients, there weren’t a lot of ingredients so it was easy to find them all. After I got all my ingredients I melted the butter and combined the spices and flour all together. After that was all combined I mixed the tomato sauce and sugar together like it had said on the recipe. I mixed it for a while but it was very thick so I added some water into it and mixed some more. After it turned creamy I was done with making my soup. The soup tasted good but I didn’t like how creamy it was. Next time I make it I would definitely try to make it less creamy. The soup smelt really good. It smelt like onion, basil, and of course like tomatoes. I’m proud of how it smelt appetizing at the end. Next time I would also add less sugar cause it was a bit too sweet.

Cooking At Home #5

For my cooking at home assignment I decided to make nachos. I got the idea of making nachos because I had everything I needed at home and we had veggies that needed to be used as soon as possible. This is a recipe me and my family have been using for a while now. I started off by cutting all the veggies and putting the chips in the pan. After I was done cutting the veggies I started putting the sauces and cheese on the chips. After I was done with that I put the veggies on top and more cheese so it would all stay together. I put it into the oven for about 10 minutes until the cheese melted. When it was all done t smelled so good. A challenge I came across was that I put a bit too much sauce so when the nachos were done cooking they were a bit soggy in some areas so I would change that for next time. When I tried them they were really good and crispy but in some areas not. Overall they turned out good so I’m not mad. I would definitely make this dish again.

Buddha Bowl

Doing this assignment was fun. It was way easier than I expected. I started off by cooking the quinoa which took about 15 mins. While I was waiting for my quinoa to cook I cut up all my veggies. Cutting the veggies was fun and didn’t take much time. I decided to use tomato’s, spinach, and peppers. After the quinoa was cooked I added some salt, pepper, and garlic seasoning, and lemon juice to it so it wouldn’t be so plain. Putting everything in the bowl was a bit confusing since I didn’t know where I should place everything, but overall I think it turned out well. Last minute I decided to add some sauce just so it would give a bit flavour to the bowl. Quinoas not my favourite but it ended up tasting okay.

Cooking At Home-Option 1(#4)

I decided to make cake pops for my fourth cooking at home assignment. I’ve been wanting to make cake pops for a while now so I thought to myself why not make them now. I started of with making the cake first. After the cake was done I let it cool off for about 20 minutes before I crushed it. After it was all cooled down I started crushing the cake and added 3 scoops of frosting into it. After it was all soft I started forming balls. I ended up making 28 balls from the crushed cake. After I was done with that I started sticking the sticks into the balls. I did that by melting chocolate chips, dipping the stick in the melted chocolate first then sticking it into the ball of cake. I realized to always have enough chocolate on the stick otherwise when you start dipping the balls into chocolate they might fall off which happened to me a couple of times. Later I started designing the cake pops which was probably the fun part of this whole process. I did have a bit trouble while dipping the cake balls into the melted chocolate because a few of them fell off. After I was done making them I put them in the fridge so they can harden up a bit. After I was done cleaning which took me about 15 minutes I tried one and it was so good. It was the perfect consistency and tasted great. I’m so glad with how it turned up in the end and I would definitely make these again.

Cooking At Home-Option 1 (#3)

For my third cooking at home assignment I decided to make banana bread. I didn’t know what I should make for my third cooking at home assignment but then I realized we had some ripe bananas lying around. I went online and searched up some banana bread recipes when I came across this super easy recipe so I said to myself why not try it out. Combining all the ingredients was super easy and I was happy I had everything at home to make the bread. On the recipe it said it would take 50 mins to an hour for the bread to be completely ready. It was hard to wait that long but it was worth it. I checked the bread once it was done and realized it wasn’t fully cooked yet so put it back into the oven for 20 more mins. Once the 20 mins was over I was so excited to finally try the bread but nope it still wasn’t ready. I had to put it back into the oven for 15 mins and it was finally ready. The bread smelt so good I was really excited to try it. It tasted amazing and I was very proud of how it ended up. From cooking this bread I learnt to always have patience which is important while cooking and many other things. Here’s the recipe for the banana bread. https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/banana_bread/

Cooking at home-option 1 (#2)

For my second cooking at home assignment I decided to make breakfast hash potato burritos. I got inspired to make these because I was just going to make hash potatoes but I thought to myself why not make burritos and do my cooking assignment. For the breakfast hash I just made them like how we made them at school. I had the recipe memorized in my head and just went along with it while I was cooking. The process of making the potatoes went great and I enjoyed cooking them. When it was time to roll my burrito I had a bit trouble rolling it but I got it after about 2 tries. I kept trying and trying until I got it perfect. After I was done I took my pictures of the food. I’m glad with how the pictures turned out. After I was done eating I started washing the dishes which went by easily since there were very less dishes. The burrito was amazing it made me full and tasted great!

cooking at home-option 1

For my first cooking at home assignment I decided to make French toast. I got inspired to make this by TikTok. I was scrolling through TikTok when I came across this girls video who was explaining how to make easy French toast, so I’m like why not make French toast for my first cooking at home assignment. I haven’t had French toast in a while so I was excited to make it! My mom told me her recipe on making French toast so that’s where I got my recipe from. I started off by gathering all my ingredients and making a mixture for the bread to soak in. I got really lucky cause we only had 3 pieces of bread at home. After my bread was all soaked I put the bread on the pan and started to cook it. While I was cooking it I was scared I wouldn’t be able to flip the bread but surprisingly it was pretty easy for me to do. After the French toast was ready I was so happy about how It turned out. It smelt so good and I was so excited to try it. Last minute I thought of adding strawberries on the side, which was a good idea. I started setting up my plate to take my picture and just couldn’t resist not eating it so after I was done taking my picture I dove in. It was soooo good and I was really happy about how it turned out. I would definitely make this again. The cleaning process was easy because I used very few dishes.

Safety and Sanitation

I am going to talk about the scones lab. This lab was really fun to do, it was a success but we also had some challenges throughout the lab. At the beginning everything was going well but, when it came to making the dough and forming the scones it was kind of hard. When making the dough we had to be careful that we don’t make it too dry or too wet. Overall our dough ended up turning really great and it was the perfect consistency. While shaping the scones we had to make sure we don’t press them too much because at the end they needed to have flakes in the middle of the scone. The safety concern during this lab was the oven. To bake our scones we used the ovens the whole time. We had to be careful that we were following the rules that we have been given while using an oven. A sanitation concern during this lab was making sure our hands were clean while dealing with the dough. We had to make sure our hands were clean because the dough was typically the main part of the scone. While handling with the dough we had to kneed the dough and shape our scones. Our scones turned out really good and were perfect.

Most Memorable Food Experience…

My most memorable food experience was when I went to India 2 years ago. My family and I went out to go shopping, when we decided to stop and get some food. In India there are lots of street food stalls on the streets. We couldn’t decide what we wanted until we came across a Tiki stall. A Tiki is a potato patty where you put a bunch of toppings on it such as, chick peas, onions, cilantro and tamarind sauce. The stall was pretty small but behind the stall they had a place where you could sit and eat your food. A Tiki is a very popular Indian food. I was excited to try the Tiki because here in Canada I usually eat the store bought ones but in India it was all homemade. They would also make the Tiki in front of you at the stall, which was cool to watch. When the Tiki was ready it looked so good and smelt very good; I was so excited. It tasted so much better than the ones here in Canada. I wish they had the same ones here in Canada.
