Pre-Calculus 11 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

I dealt with barely passing at the beginning of the semester. I started working with a friend who took the course last semester so I got my grade up. With the hard work I put in and determination I demonstrated, I was able to work my grade up to a 73. Hopefully after the chapter 8 test and the finals I’ll find my self in the mid to high 70s.

I was able to work with others when I decided to study with my friend who took the course last semester. they really helped me get on the right track after getting off to a rocky start. We decided to meet up every Wednesday at lunch and work on pre-calc. This has definitely paid off so far and as we are coming down the final stretch I hope the hard work continues to pay off.

I was committed to my individual practice when I had tests on difficult topics in this course. I would often work on extra practice sheets for a few days before the test as well as work from the workbook. I would also review the notes on the notes page so I would be familiar with the math terminology.

Advice For Future Students

I would suggest getting help early if you are struggling. Make sure you complete all the assigned work so you have a better chance of doing well in the course. I would also suggest doing the extra practice before tests and quizzes.

My Parabola

Paragraph About Parabolas And How They Connect To My Parabola

The “a” in the equation determines the way the parabola opens and how wide or narrow it is. If the “a” is negative it will open downwards and if it is positive it will open up. If a≥ 1 or a≤-1 the parabola will be narrow. In order for the parabola to be wide “a” must be > 1 and >0 or <0 and >-1. “h” determines how far left or right the vertex is. If it is negative in the equation it will be positive on the graph and vise versa. “k” determines how up or down the vertex is, up being positive, down being negative. Since my equations “a” is -4 the parabola opens down and is narrow. The “h” and “k” are 2 and 3 the vertex is (-2,3).

Self-Assessment

  1. When I stated my equation, showed a picture of the graph and explained how the graph would look would be examples of me representing the same mathematical idea in different ways.
  2. I used the ≤, ≥,< and > symbols to demonstrate my understanding of how big or small “a” is and how it will affect the parabola.
  3. I separated my paragraph and my self-assessment portion of this Edublog by adding headings. Further more I described what my pictures meant so it would be easier to understand what was going on.

Making and Sharing Reflections

Making- Share progress while making to gather feedback. While making this recipe Ms. Bolli reminded us to take off our roux from the element while we were adding the milk. We listened and it prevented the milk solids from scorching and kept the white sauce light.

Sharing- Assess their ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively, including their ability to share and maintain an efficient co-operative workspace. During this lab I did my part as quick but thoroughly in order to be able to work with my partner better. While making the white sauce I stirred while my partner poured the milk. I always make sure that my station is clean before I go and sit down.

Core Competency Reflection

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include… I’ll first ask my group then I’ll ask the group beside me. Finally, I’ll ask Ms. Bolli if none of us know the answer to my question.

The ways I communicate while cooking differ from how I communicate at ____ (soccer/ work/ hockey/ piano lessons/ family events/etc) in these ways: I don’t yell in the kitchen as I would at baseball or basketball. I communicate usually by saying “I can do this, can you do this?” instead of talking just about me like I do in baseball.

If the group is not productive, we can …. in order to get things moving in the right direction. We can re-assign the tasks for that lab to lean towards each members strengths. I could also ask them to focus at the task at hand more to get the job done.

My goal for next term is to really pay attention to how the group is working together. I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see… I chose this goal so I can be a better leader in the kitchen. I’ll achieve this by watching and listening more to how the group is working together.

Facing A Challenge

The first time I did this problem I didn’t understand the question because I didn’t understand the subs teaching. The problem I had on my first attempt was that I didn’t simplify first before multiplying. I used Google image to do one of the problems you didn’t assign in that section and used the same strategy on this question. I needed to remember to simplify first before doing anything else. Next time I come across a problem that is difficult I will simplify before I try to start doing anything else.

Live Saving Measures

My three takeaways from CPR and the naloxone presentation are… I learned that naloxone replaces the opioid cell in your brain. I also learned that if you give naloxone to someone who doesn’t need it, they will be completely fine. Because naloxone doesn’t negatively affect the body, it makes it safe to use even if you don’t need it. Finally, I learned that when someone wakes up from an overdose, they are likely to be violent and may even run away from you. I am more aware that no matter where I go, I may need to do CPR or give a naloxone shot to save someone’s life. Overdose and cardiac arrest can happen to anyone anywhere and I am able to help with the information I’ve learned this week.
