Life Saving Measures

One take away from the presentations for me is, to check someone’s responsiveness you can rub their sternum hard because it is quite painful and should wake someone up if they are sleeping. Another take away from this week is that opioids interfere with neurons and prevent them from working correctly. Your body will try to fix it but when it can’t it gets tired and shuts down. When the body shuts down it is considered and overdose. Naloxone can be administered to disrupt the bond between the opioid and neuron temporarily so the overdose stops until the first responders can give the proper medications to stop the overdose permanently. I learned that there is a safe injection sites and there is one in New West. These sessions have taught me value able life skills that can potentially save lives especially since there is a high chance I witness a overdose.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

I understand the importance in naloxone from the facts presented to me, I am now considering getting a kit. I my decision of not partaking in drugs or alcohol has been now backed by the statistics and stories presented by the nurse. From the CPR presentation I can use evidence from preforming the pain response test to see if a person may need CPR or not.

Live Saving Measures

My three takeaways from CPR and the naloxone presentation are… I learned that naloxone replaces the opioid cell in your brain. I also learned that if you give naloxone to someone who doesn’t need it, they will be completely fine. Because naloxone doesn’t negatively affect the body, it makes it safe to use even if you don’t need it. Finally, I learned that when someone wakes up from an overdose, they are likely to be violent and may even run away from you. I am more aware that no matter where I go, I may need to do CPR or give a naloxone shot to save someone’s life. Overdose and cardiac arrest can happen to anyone anywhere and I am able to help with the information I’ve learned this week.
