Linear and Non-Linear Equations

Linear Equations

x=4

This is a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because it forms a straight line. I can tell from the equation because x has a degree of 1.

y-3=4(x+1)

This is a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because it forms a straight line. I can tell from the equation because the highest exponent is 1.

Non-Linear Equations

y=-2(x-4)^2

This is a nonlinear equation. I can tell from the graph because it forms a parabola. I can tell from the equation because its highest exponent is 2.

y=√x

This is a nonlinear equation. I can tell from the graph because it forms a non straight line. I can tell from the equation because there are square roots.

Self-Assessment

I explored mathematical ideas using technology when I was graphing the equations on Desmos.

I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusions when I was checking if the equations were lienar or non-linear.

I justified my conclusions with evidence when I looked at graph and equations.
