Linear System Group Assignment

Purpose

Our group needed to create our own linear system by demonstrating it by using graphing and algebra to show our understanding of linear systems.

Curricular Response

My group and I used mathematical vocabulary and decisions to do the algebra part of the assignment. My group and I used mathematical vocabulary to do steps correctly. For example, instead of saying “multiply the number next to x” my group and I said “coefficient” to be specific. Also, we used the word “solution” to show our final answer. My group and I used the substitutional method. We thought it was easier to use the method because using substitution you have to isolate one variable with no coefficients, and plug in 2x+3 into the other equation’s y. We were more comfortable with the method because we thought we would make mistakes if we did the addition method. Also there was a fraction and we didn’t want to get rid of it because there was going to be a coefficient with the y.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

I work with others to achieve a goal. For example, the linear system group assignment. We had to make our own linear system and solve it if it works.

I participate in classroom or group activities that improve the class. In the linear system assignment I participated in a group and contributed to help my group members.

Linear and Non-Linear Equations

Linear Equations:

Example 1:

2x-3y=12

This is a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because linear graphs are in a straight line. I can tell from the equation, because there are only two variables and they have the power of 1.

Example 2:

This is a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because linear graphs are in a straight line. I can tell from the equation, because there is only one variable and it has the power of 1.

Non-Linear Equations:

Example 1:

y= 3/x

This is not a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because non-linear graphs are not a straight line. I can tell from the equation, because the variables have an exponent other than positive one (x to the power -1).

Example 2:

y=(x+1)(x-1)

This is not a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because non-linear graphs are not in a straight line. I can tell from the equation, because the variables have an exponent other than positive one (x to the power 2).

Self Assessment

  • I explored mathematical ideas using technology when I look at new softwares.
  • I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusions when I finish an assignment.
  • I justified my conclusions with evidence when I use images.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility: How I manage school-related stress.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I listen to music.

I can prevent some school-related stress by finishing assignments on time or earlier.

When distractions are getting in the way of my work, I can make a schedule for myself to get my work done.

When I am feeling down about school, I remind myself that the next day will be better.
