My Writing

Core Competency Reflection

In general, when I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I usually go on short walks or take a little time to rest. Something that has significantly helped me in boosting my mood was listening to something in the background. For example, putting on my earbuds and listening to music or movies, and doing my work have boosted my mood as well as helped me re-focus on my task. I don’t know why but listening to movies in the background while doing my work helped me finish my work. I think I work better with some sort of background noise because I get sleepy often, and listening to something has significantly helped me stay awake.

For this assignment, one strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is re-reading the text of the pages I was assigned to illustrate for a graphic novel revised from the play of Kevin Loring’s Where the Blood Mixes. Reading the text multiple times has helped me with my imagination, helping me with how I plan to draw out the scenes.

Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include knowing when I should take a break. Taking a break is important to me since it helps me rest, and think about what I should do next. If I go on without taking a break when I need it, I end up not knowing what to do, and my mind goes blank. Taking a break has helped me refresh my mind and helped me maintain a healthy, and balanced lifestyle.

My Goals

Going forwards, I hope to learn more about the indigenous peoples in more detail. This semester, by completing the tasks and assignments, I was able to achieve good grades by consistently attending class on time, and putting in a lot of effort in my work, such as doing my assignments to the best of my ability that I could do. I am proud of the work I have done and achieved in this class and plan to continue this work style in the future.

Chemistry 12 Core Competency Self-Assessment

I chose the Acids and Base lab as my artifact as I believe this lab has led me to demonstrate my collaborating skills the best. When collaborating with my partner for this Acids and Bases titration lab, we made sure to talk on the day of the lab to ensure that we knew what parts each of us should work on in order to make sure that this lab goes as smoothly as possible. For instance, my lab partner would most pour the solution into a beaker while I would write down the measurements since we each had our strengths and flaws in different areas. Since I usually have slightly shaky hands, we decided that I would write down the measurements while she pours the solution in for the first part of the lab. For the second part of the lab, the actual titrating part, we once again had different parts we played, for example, I worked on swirling the flask while my partner worked on doing drops of NaOH into the solution. By collaborating with each other, we were able to achieve successful results in the lab.

Core Competencies: Spanish Dialogue

For this assignment, we were in groups of 3 or 4. We were assigned to create a script which would incorporate elements that were taught in Spanish 9 & 10. In the script, the elements used were: introductions, describing yourself, what you study, family members, sports, as well as 6 transitional phrases and 3 idioms. My group went through the challenge of not having enough time to finish the script as we had some troubles thinking of how we should create the script, so we finished it during lunch and presented it at lunch.

I show others that I truly value their contributions by…

During this assignment, we all had to contribute ideas to make create the script as best as it could be. We all showed that we valued each other’s contribution by listening when others were giving ideas, contributing possible ideas, giving suggestions, etc.. As a result, my group got a high mark.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

The artifact that is shown above is a Chemical Reaction lab that I did with a partner. In this lab, we had to determine the reaction between solutions of calcium chloride and sodium carbonate.

I demonstrated critical and reflective thinking through this lab, “Calculations with a Chemical Reaction in Solution.” I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in this lab. During the lab, we are to collect qualitative observations, I used the evidence presented to make the decisions whether the evidence was fact or opinion since for qualitative observations, we are only to write facts, not our opinions. A skill that grew in this lab was differentiating better between facts and opinions to collect correct data.

Physics Slinky Lab

For this slinky lab, we were given the task of stretching a spring, rigidly holding the other end, and producing a transverse pulse with a rapid sideways motion. We did this lab in order to acquire a deeper understanding of the physics concept of waves. Throughout this lab, we learned about transverse waves, longitudinal waves, energy transfer, fixed-end reflection, and open-end reflection. This lab helped me understand waves much better as there were visual elements to this lab rather than just writing notes.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/ see…

I knew the group was working well together as we all contributed to this lab. We did our best to understand the lab and were able to work productively and were mostly able to not get distracted by other things. We were able to finish parts a, b, c, d, and e of the lab, which were most of the lab questions. When we were stuck on a question, we tried asking each other to figure out how to answer the question. As a result, I think the group worked effectively together.

Musical Performance Reflection

Fall concert

Something we worked on during this course that I am proud of is the songs we performed during our fall concert, as I think the 2022 fall concert was one of the best fall concerts we have done. We practiced a lot and I think our final result was pretty impressive, as one of our songs sounded pretty good. In the song, “Don’t get around much anymore,” the last chord we sang sounded really pretty since we practiced it a lot.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

A performance technique or musical skill I have shown success with through this chosen experience would be projecting my voice, as well as learning to breathe correctly when singing. A skill and technique I would like to improve on is still voice projection as I still have trouble with it. I will continue to practice improving my voice projection. My plans for continuing with music in the future would be to join both vocal jazz and concert choir again next year, which would be my final year before I graduate.

Core Competencies Reflection

I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.

During choir, I ask questions if I don’t understand how to do something, for example, if we were learning a song, and I didn’t know how to sing my part (alto), I would ask for help to understand how to sing that part. On the other hand, I respond to questions that my peers may ask me, for example, if someone didn’t know how to read musical notes, I would help them since I learned how to read notes.
