Communication Competency
Through being in Vocal Jazz, I have built confidence by performing in front of a large audience. After many years, I have felt encouraged to reach out to others for feedback. Feedback I received during rehearsals leading up to our performance influenced my growth by prompting me to strengthen my communication abilities and relationships around me. Strengthening my communication abilities has helped me understand more about the importance of talking with our peers as if we face any problems, there will always be at least one person who will help you.
In our rehearsals, I had to communicate my ideas when we were having sectionals. By communicating my ideas to my fellow section members, we were able to use our time to learn our parts more efficiently. For instance, during sectionals, if the music we are learning is more difficult, I try suggesting ways to learn our parts more efficiently. For instance, I sometimes suggest that we learn measure by measure, or by page instead of going through the whole thing all at once.
Furthermore, working with my fellow vocal jazz ensemble members for our last performance, I contributed to our success by establishing a growing mindset. This has allowed me to view obstacles as opportunities for learning. Viewing obstacles in this manner has helped me become more flexible of any challenges that I face. This allowed me to think of any setbacks as opportunities which I had a chance to learn from, which allowed me to continue having a positive attitude even when things became stressful.
