During my time learning about CPR, I learned that you can save a life by performing CPR. I never considered that people who perform CPR would need to get permission from the person that is to be saved unless that person goes unconscious.
The key takeaway from the Theory or Practical CPR unit was the 4 R’s of CPR: Risk, Recognize, React and Resuscitate. The key takeaway is about the 4 R’s because they teach us about the risk factors, about how to recognize what might develop into a serious emergency, how to react if an emergency does occur, and about how to resuscitate a person if they happen to require assistance.
This CPR unit connects to the nutrition unit as both of them focus on health. CPR helps us to learn how to help people who are having emergencies concerning their health and well being while nutrition helps us learn about to keep healthy, like a healthy diet.
Core Competency Reflection
I can analyze evidence to make judgments
I chose this one because during my time learning about CPR, although I didn’t really have a lot of knowledge about it, I learned during this unit. I soon could understand and analyzed when to make my judgment on whether that person is in need of CPR or not.
I can work with others to achieve my goal
I chose this one because I demonstrated that I could work with others during this unit. For example, I worked with others when practicing CPR compressions on the dummies, me and the other(s) sometimes switched out when the other was tired and such, which helped us achieve our goal of saving the “person” (dummy)
I can represent my learning and how it connects to my experiences
I chose this because although I didn’t have a lot of knowledge or any experience in the CPR unit, I started to know more about it. My no experience sort of helped me understand the learning because when I learn something new, it sticks to me better than something I already knew, and adds more information.
I can tell the difference between facts and opinions
I chose this because, I learned that in this unit, it’s safest to go by facts rather than your own opinions. For example, if a person you found in the middle of the park is on the floor. If you go by facts, you would check if the person is breathing first, then if they’re not, you call 911 and start the compressions. On the other hand, if you go by your own opinion, and start doing compressions on that person, it would be awkward if that person was just sleeping in the park rather than suffering from a cardiac arrest or something.
One goal I have for myself going forward is to think before reacting since sometimes if were to be in an emergency, I feel like I might try acting before thinking things through which would probably not work out well. I intend to work towards the core competency, “I recognize my emotions and use strategies to manage them.” I am working towards this goal because there is a high probability I might start rushing when in a real-life emergency even if I did well practicing on the dummies. I would work towards this goal by learning not to go by instinct, but rather step by step and bit by bit even if there are risks I would be going through until the time comes when my first step is not acting without thinking to an emergency but by using my thought and processing the situation.
