Music Monday “LAND” Map Assignment: Self-Assessment

Curricular Response

I chose the quote “This is my land” and the second image to support the meaning represented in my assignment because I think they represent the central theme of this assignment, which discussed colonialism. I think this is a question worthy of reflection. When people think this piece of land is their own, have they ever thought of who it originally belonged to? Is it first come first served? Or does nature itself not belong to anyone? I named my assignment title as “This is “our” land” to ask my doubt.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

How did your values inform your decisions when completing this assignment?

My values inform my decisions when completing this assignment. I took BC First People last semester and it really affects my decision, when Europeans stole the Indians’ lands and said that “This is my land”, it sounds ironic. It reminds me of how they treated the indigenous people for the following years after stealing their land, how they tried to brainwash the indigenous children and eliminate their culture, it is totally messed up.

Economics 12 Core Competencies Reflection

I have chosen the stock market project I have completed in this course for my core competencies reflection. We were given $100,000 to purchase our stock and we need to choose 3-5 companies for our investment. After finishing the stock market project, I improved my positive personal and cultural identity competency. I have gained the ability to predict and invest in a stock market, and also understand investing gains and losses at the same time. My strength as a learner is putting these experiences into the future. Now I have learned how to invest in stocks and I will definitely invest money in real-life situations later on. It is a decent way to gain money and lots of people do that. However, I will not put a lot of money into it, since I am still a beginner at investing and indeed, there are a lot of risks.

Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Reflection

I have recently done a presentation on connecting media and psychological disorders, I believe that communication and thinking competency have been demonstrated. Through the presentation, I have increased my collaborating and communicating skills, I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. My audience and I shared our presentations with each other and tried to give out comments on others’ presentations. I think it is a pretty good way to do small-group presentations because we feel less pressure and are willing to share more ideas. In this presentation, I ask and respond to questions to learn to become an active, supportive listener.

Also, while I am working on my presentation, I have increased my creative thinking. I can form new ideas to create new things and try to make the connection between art pieces and psychological disorders. I am glad that I have a chance to share about this artist’s art. It is a meaningful project, that gives me a chance to do more research about the connection between media and psychological disorders.

Social Psychology Monopoly Assignment Reflection

My group mates and I have recently done the monopoly assignment, I have improved my social and communication competency. I have increased my social awareness and responsibility, through the monopoly assignment have learned many kinds of social physiology effects, bias. I can identify how my action affect the community or environment and I can make positive change. I have learned 7 types of social psychology and knew that our behaviour are deeply linked with the social. In the future, I hope that I can be a respectful person and decrease someone’s social influence.

On the other hand, We work as a group and achieve the same goal. I am glad that we got full marks in this assignment. It is a fun project, my groupmates and I have got a chance to do more research about social psychology.

Research Assignment Reflection

After finishing the research assignment, I improved my communication and thinking competency. I work with others to achieve a goal. My groupmates and I have to do a research assignment about more sleeping hours affect high school students’ GPAs positively. During the process my teammates and I need to have a close discussion to get the same opinion, we respect and listen to each other’s opinions. We worked together at the weekend, and we all put our efforts into the project. Even though we do not text each other, we left messages in the word document and everyone takes turns doing it at different times. This makes me feel like we are really a team and we are working together to achieve the same goal.

For thinking competence, I can analyze evidence to make judgments. During the research assignment, we received lots of answers from different students in different grades for our survey. In order to get the result of our research, we need to analyze those data and put them in different groups. The evidence I have got helps me to make up a conclusion that sleeping hours do not affect high school students’ GPAs positively.

Equation of a parabola

Communicating & Representing on Parabola

My equation:

Graph of my parabola:

A value:

A value determines the width of the parabola. If the a value is bigger than 1, the parabola will become narrow. And when a is bigger than 0 but smaller than 1, the parabola will become wide. If a is smaller than 0, the parabola will face down.

H value:

H value determines whether the parabola shifts left or right. If the h value is negative, the parabola will shift to the right horizontally. If h value is positive, the parabola will shift to the left.

K value:

k value determines whether the parabola shifts up or down. If k value is positive, the parabola will shift up and if the k value is negative, the parabola will shift down.

Differences:

In my equation, my a value is -2, h value is -6 and my k value is -5. According to my a value, my parabola face down and become narrow because it is bigger than one but is negative while the original parabola faces upwards as a is positive. My h value moves the parabola left and right so since the h value is 6, the parabola shifted 6 places to the left while the original parabola doesn’t have a h value so it hasn’t shifted. The k value of my parabola moved the graph 5 spaces down from the origin of the graphing plane while the original parabola remains at the origin as it doesn’t have a k value.

Self-Assessment:

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways? (for example, as a graph, an equation and in words)

I represented the same mathematical idea in graph, an equation and in words. Both three of them are able to let me find out the values of the parabola. And can help me solve this questions in different ways.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

A lots of vocabulary are used to demonstrate my understanding such as: parabola, face up/ down, shift left/ right, narrow/ wide. These vocabulary can make me seems to understand this chapter better and makes me look more professional.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

I had use two colours to highlight the difference between my parabola and the original parabola to make it more easy to distinguish. Also I have listed out how the values can change the parabola in a clear and organized way.

Button Dichotomous Key

During the button dichotomous activity, I improved my communication competency. I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. We need to classify different kind of buttons into different branches to recognize each different button, during the process my teammates and I need to have a close discussion to get the same opinion, we respect and listen to each other’s opinions. Also I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by naming for different buttons, different names can help us to classify that specific button by knowing what are their feature.

The War Between the classes CC

The Novel

About the book

“The war between the classes” is a book written by Gloria Miklowitz, telling a story which happened in a social studies class. All of the students got to experience great social experience that even changed many of the characters. We spent the first 20 minutes of the class to read the novel for two weeks then we started to do some test, class write and project for the novel.

Core Competency Reflection

Communicating

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. In the novel study class write, we are asked to provide lots of our own ideas and reflections. During the writing, I learned how to share my ideas mixed with the example on the novel in a clear way.

Critical and Reflective Thinking

I can reflect on my thinking. In the novel project, I chose to do a journal for one of the main character and I need to stand in his position and go through those changes with him. That made me have a chance to reflect on my thinking too.

Creative Thinking

I can form new ideas to create new things. I can also build on the ideas of others. As I said I chose to do a journal for one main character, I am asked for discover more of his inner thoughts, that give me a chance to understand Adam and create more scenes that are out of the book.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

I can work to inform myself about issues surrounding me. The main idea of this novel is to share the idea that ‘We should not have prejudice to others, we are all the same.’ I have learned a lot from this novel with the issues that are surrounding this society and me.

Goal :

I can identify my strengths and identify my potential.
I haven’t discovered any aspects of myself that are better than others, and I haven’t felt that I have the ability and potential.  I hope one day I can discover what makes me different
