Math 10 Core Competency Self-Assessment
Core Competency Reflection
Dealing with challenges:
In this classroom, I’ve been faced with numerous challenges with the many new concepts I’ve learnt so far. There were occasions where I would feel like giving up on a question that I found difficult without even putting a slight bit of effort. Regardless of my struggle, I have continued to try and push through and ask for help along the way. An example of this could be when I was making multiple attempts at the questions for the addition and substitution method. There were times when I would mess up and try again yet, I would still be wrong. I’ve had a question where I retried three times, but luckily on the fourth try I finally got it. Personally, I enjoy math and even though trying to find my small mistakes was tedious and time consuming, it gave me the chance to realize what mistake I made and to not do it again in the future. When there are times where I absolutely can’t figure out a question and where to start, I would ask my friends around me, my math teacher, or look on OneNote in order fully utilize my resources.
Working collaboratively with others:
Being able to communicate with others and have other people’s input made the material a lot easier for me to understand. It also provided me with a more interesting learning experience as I gained a stronger connection(with friends) while enjoying my math studies. It’s true that at times we got distracted talking on other subjects, but we tried to make sure we completed what was on the board first. In terms of groupwork, we would always support each other and try to follow whoever was solving the equation. It was often very productive and gave us a chance to practice all together before independent work. Solving the equations in groups gave me a sense of ease because I knew I had others to depend on especially if I got a bit confused with the new methods. Group work has definitely helped me improve my math skills and I hope we have it in grade 11 too!
Committing to Individual practice:
Throughout this semester, I was very motivated to get a high grade in this class. This idea resulted in my extra effort of completing more questions in the workbook than needed to gain a better understanding of my material. It gradually benefited my grades, which was evident when my test scores returned. It was also amusing to use the knowledge I had obtained to solve extra challenges. Plus, it’s a lot easier to do classwork, which is a win-win situation: I develop my math skills and my grade benefits with it. It is also good for my test preparation and setting my own pace. In general, doing individual practice both inside of class and outside makes math a lot more easier and gets me closer to mastering a concept.
Advice for Future Students
To succeed in Math 10, you should be paying close attention to the explanations to get a good understanding and basis of what you’re going to be doing. Then, of course you should try participating when your teacher asks a question or in group work. What’s more, preparing for tests and persevering through challenges is super important. Try not to hesitate too much or be too hard on yourself. Struggling is key when moving forward because it pushes you to work harder. Lastly, never be afraid to reach out and ask for help. It’s always beneficial!
