Core Competency Self Assessment

Communication

I displayed competency in communication and collaboration skills throughout this lab with my partner. I make sure to communicate the roles and responsibilities I will take on, and talk about what each of us can do. To make sure my partner and I were doing the lab correctly, we both reviewed the procedure together to be on the same page. We also communicated often while doing the lab together, to make sure we weren’t repeating steps or grabbing materials we didn’t need. When we became confused about our observations, we would cooperate amongst ourselves and talk about it or ask our peer.

In other core competencies, like thinking, I believe I can improve when analyzing my findings. I am open to feedback.

Accounting 11

Core Competency: Communication

In this class, I was able to advocate for myself on multiple occasion. I am able to communicate with both my peers and my teacher in order to clarify any questions I may have. During the midterm, I had to partner up with one of my classmates and we had to figure out all the problems together through effective communication.

Titrations – Chem 11

Artifact:

Technique:

Curricular Competency Explanation:

Titrations are a method used to find the unknown molarity of an acid and a base by utilizing a neutralization reaction. The process of a titration requires one to use an indicator to identify the end point of a neutralization reaction. An end point of a neutralization reaction is when an acid and base have fully neutralized one another. This results in a water and salt being formed (the salt will dissolve resulting in an aqueous solution). One can identify the end point of a titration when the solution in the Erlenmeyer flask has any amount of color change evident for more than thirty seconds. Once the end point is found, the volume used to neutralize is applied in a stoichiometry calculation to determine the unknown molarity of a solution. In this lab specifically, we were given an unknown molarity of hydrochloric acid and known molarity of sodium hydroxide. Using titration methods, we determined the required volume of sodium hydroxide to neutralize hydrochloric acid. This volume was then used in molarity calculations and stoichiometry calculations to identify the unknown molarity of hydrochloric acid. At the end of my experiment, we found that the molarity of the acid was 0.142 molar based off our quantitative observations/results.

Core Competency Reflection: Communication

I am able to communicate with my partner during labs about gathering materials and sharing tasks. During titration, I am able to collaborate with my lab partner to identify the equivalence point of the titration. My partner and I were consistently checking in with each other and making sure we both agreed before stopping or going forward with adding more sodium hydroxide. I am able to communicate with the teacher, if I am unsure of my calculations and can explain my thought processes and work done for titrations. During the lab, I approached the teacher to double-check my work so that I could feel more confident about my work. I am able to practice active listening when talking to the teacher and peers. When faced with a problem, I am able to convey my thoughts to someone else as well as advocate for others when asking questions.

My Equation’s Domain and Range

My equation:

My graph:

Domain

A domain is the collection of all possible input values that may be utilized in a function. It is also commonly referred to as the x value because you can plug it into an equation and find the domain off the x-axis. My equation represents a domain with no limits, as shown by the arrows and lines that stretch in all directions continuously( in graph). Therefore, the domain is all real numbers.

My domain:

Range

A range is a group of all potential output values that a function can create. It is determined by testing the function with various input values and writing down all of the related output values. Similarly to domain, range is also known as the y value and found on the y-axis. The range of my equation is y is equal to or smaller than -5 as you can see below. This is because all the possible output values cannot be over -5.

My range:

Extra graph

This graph has the same equation but a different type of line compared to the original one. The small dots that continue in this parabola show points where the x and y values may differ. It demonstrates each position has coordinates that correlate to the input and output values.

Is the equation a function or not?

I strongly believe that my equation is a function after utilizing the vertical line test. A graph can be identified as a function if a vertical line can be traced across it and only intersects the graph at one point at any given time. If by chance it were to touch more than once, it would not be considered a function. As I used a pencil to go through the the graph vertically, it did not touch more than once. Hence this is a function, but not one-to-one.

Self-Assessment

An instance where I had to express a mathematical concept using different approaches is demonstrated by the arrows I included on both graphs. They both help to convey that the point doesn’t stop at the cut-off of the picture. I realize how important it is to draw them, otherwise, one would think the point ends there, leading to a completely different domain and range than stated in the above paragraph.

When defining domain and range, I tried to use mathematical vocabulary to explain exactly what they are so the reader could understand them effectively. I have also used some mathematical terms such as ‘the vertical line test’ when describing whether my equation was a function or not. In general, I have a clearer understanding of what these words mean and can use them successfully in sentences.

I made sure to organize my information clearly so that whoever decides to read my Edublog could understand what I’m talking about in an instant. I have clear headings to show what I’m talking about and I previewed my site several times to see if I should change the sizes of my pictures, etc. Also, I put in the extra effort to draw the arrows in the graph to show correctly that my domain is all real numbers. As well as using pictures to make my range and domain more noticeable, rather than making it small and less prominent.

PHE 9 AH Reflection

My Stressors

I believe that many of my stress-related problems come from me overthinking and freaking out. There has been a number of moments where I felt overwhelmed from the amount of schoolwork given because I always try my best to meet my own expectations. I’ve also experienced being in drama and trust me, it sucks. You gain so much pressure from the people around you and lots of people start talking about it which isn’t the best first impression. A lot of things that happen in drama are hurtful and never good. When I went through that I had an incredible load on me that made me feel so down. To deal with it, I tried communicating with the other person to resolve the conflict and talk with my friends and family to vent and get their advice. I also would take some time off my devices and go on a walk or cook up some food. It definitely gave me some time to think and let go of my problems even for just a little bit. Therefore, if you face a problem or are just stressed in general, take a break and do something you enjoy.

Core Competency Reflection

I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. For example, when I am confused on a PE test, I always go up to the teacher and ask what it means.

I am kind to others, and support others when they need it. Especially when my friends or others in this class are shy, I always cheer them on to make them feel more encouraged. I just want to treat others good like how I want to be treated.

I take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. In relevance to PE, I try to do group activitues efficiently or as much as I can so I can be a good teammate to others.

My goal is to be more active and try to be more involved with the sport were doing in PE.

Meal Planning Assignment

Problem:

A family of four needs help designing a meal plan, but there are specific requirements that must be met. The plan has to be adjusted to their schedule, so that it all works out. They said each person should cook at least one day of the week, everyone has to be home when they have the meal, and the number of servings should be four unless there’s an outside factor. Obviously, they wanted us to include who’s making the food, the serving size, which one it is, and the time they cook/ have dinner.

Solution:

So this is what my group came up with:

Justification:

On Monday, Parent B will cook Chickpea Cauliflower Curry. This is a good choice because it isn’t too difficult of a recipe after they finish their work that day. Plus, it usually takes only 25 minutes meaning that by the time Parent B finishes cooking, Parent A will already be home and ready to eat dinner with their family. The cooking time is reasonable since Parent A and the two teens will have enough time to rest and do a short activity while dinner is getting prepared. In addition, Parent A needs to leave for an event at 8pm, so they have to eat between 6 to 8. If you see the serving size, you can tell that there will be four extra portions of food which will ultimately get packed for lunch the next day as leftovers.

On Tuesday, Parent A and Teen 1 will cook Tuna Casserole. This is a good choice because the days they have to cook will be more fair since we don’t want only one person to cook for the entire week. Plus, Tuna Casserole takes around 45 minutes which is pretty boring if you’re by yourself, so I put one of the teens and the parents together as a kind of “bonding time.” The family is having their friends come over, so the recipe I chose had lots of servings. Also, the time they eat will give Teen 2 enough time for themselves to get ready to go to their activity.

On Wednesday, Teen 2 will cook Black Bean Tacos. This is a good choice because it is a simple tasty meal that only takes 15 minutes to make. Especially since Teen 2 can only make easy recipes with the exception of cooking with one of the parents. The serving size is four because there is no one coming over and they don’t need to make leftovers for lunch tomorrow, making it the perfect portion for them to eat. Teen 2 will start making the tacos at 5:50pm and finish at 6:05pm so that Parent A will come 8 minutes before they start dinner. Moreover, Teen 1 must leave at 7pm, giving her enough time to eat before departing.

On Thursday, Parent A will cook Tonkatsu, Cabbage, and Rice. This is a good choice because it is a delicious food that can eat all together. Parent A is making this since it is their specialty, they come home earlier, and so that the work is equal. The time they start cooking is at 5:10pm until 5:45pm which means they will start dinner earlier because it is their favorite food. Instead of having people work on the same day they have an activity to do, I thought it would be less work to cook on the days they don’t have an evening event.

On Friday, Teen 1 will cook Chicken Noodle Soup. This is a good choice because the family’s grandparents are coming over and Teen 1 wanted to surprise them with their cooking skills. The extra two servings will go to them and since there are no evening activities for any of the individuals, I thought it would be pleasant for them to just have a good family meal together. Dinner starts at 6:30pm so that everyone has extra time to get ready because they want to look presentable in front of them.

New Recipe:

Tonkatsu, Cabbage, and Rice

Number of Servings: 4

Time to make: 45 minutes

Difficulty level: Medium

Collaboration Reflection:

To begin with, our group first had a small conversation on teams and then we went onto the word document. On that document, I discussed the tasks that we needed to fulfill and after some discussion, we finally wrote down the roles each person had. While we were chatting, there were a few difficulties that had occurred. Some of these problems being the inability to directly communicate face to face and the complication while using word. During our dividing of work, two of the members were having trouble deciding which task they wanted to do which caused us to be a bit delayed. Moreover, when we typed on word, it would show up as locked meaning that we couldn’t type on the same line but we just worked around it instead. There was also a time when people weren’t doing their work and since communicating online wasn’t getting through, we just briefly talked about it in person making sure everyone was back on task. For me, I had to decide which family member cooks on which day, but I was sick the first time we were working on it. So when I came back, I made sure to get informed about what had happened so far and tried to contribute as much as I could. The meal plan that was already made was still incomplete for some of the days and parts of it didn’t make sense. Therefore, I created a newly organized one, filled in the missing days and changed some parts that didn’t make sense. Plus, I put in pictures and found recipes with links to make sure we had all the necessary components.

Self Assessment: Collaboration & Critical Thinking

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I try my best to be respectful and attentive so that we can get get along and understand each other. For instance, some people had question on parts of the assignment so I tried to explain and be in touch in case they need help again.

I know the group is working well together when I hear/see texts on teams and conversations on word where the group is helping one another if they encounter a problem. In addition, there are times when I have to go to someone’s table if they aren’t looking at the messages or if there is a difficulty involving technology.

I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is what you see here, the entire Edu blog post and checklist Ms. Lam had handed out. I made sure to follow the instructions and put a little twist on some parts as well to make it more unique.

I use evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in the solution section. As you see up above, it is a neatly organized meal plan, but what you don’t see is the work behind it. The one you see is a modified version of the original. I chose to make this second version because I could tell it didn’t make sense for certain segments in the first form. This decision worked out well in the end.

About Me

My Bio

Hi! I’m Grace and I would like to describe myself as an introverted and cheerful person. Whenever I have free time, I enjoy reading Korean comics and having a fun time with my friends, but sometimes I spend too much money. Often times, we do activities together that involve sports or cooking food. Without a doubt, volleyball is one of my favourite sports. I don’t know why, but just keeping a ball up in the air is so entertaining especially if it’s up for a long time. Baking is also a hobby that makes me feel both confused and accomplished. In particular, when my measuring cups don’t match up with the recipe. From time to time, I just lay in my bed or go on a walk and listen to some music. Personally, it’s one of the best stress relieving things out there. Most times I turn on songs that leave a warmhearted feeling inside and play them for hours. I always choose based on how I’m feeling that day. Besides that, I have a habit of leaving small drawings on my paper if there’s space since it’s a quick activity to do, but they don’t always look the best. If I were to say what I’m bad at, it would definitely be technology and the motivation to do anything. That’s why my goals are to be more efficient and lead a more organized life. I hope you enjoyed reading a little about me:)

My Favourite Website

https://ca.shein.com/?ref=www&rep=dir&ret=ca

Online shopping is the best thing ever! Even if I’m not getting anything, just browsing through and looking at the clothes give me a burst of serotonin. It’s that feeling where you get excited for the slightest chance that you could buy it. One time, I was on this website for two hours just exploring and talking with my friends through call. It’s truly a delightful place to go if you’re bored.

My Favourite Video

The video you see above is a three hour vlog of just studying while listening to music. After watching a small bit, I must say I am impressed with how hard she is working. It gives me motivation to put in more effort, so that others can also be inspired by my work habits just like what this person is doing here.

My Favourite Image

To start off, I recently found this picture off the internet and decided to use this for my image. There was another photo that inspired me before I found this one, but there was no creative commons license. I’m still content with this one too. For me, the view looks spectacular and makes me fantasize about life itself. There are many emotions I go through whenever I see it and that’s why I chose this specifically.
