Social Justice Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking – Power of Narratives:

The critical and reflective core competency encompasses being able to gather, analyze, and select information while considering other perspectives in order to make judgements, interpretations and conclusions supported by collected evidence. I chose the Power of Narratives assignment as evidence of my abilities in this core competency because the activity before the written assignment required us to read and interpret a focused article on a Sixties Scoop survivor and summarize their experience to share it with a group. We also had to listen to our group member’s summarizations of their focused Sixties Scoop survivor and then as a group, we had to reflect on all the information to draw conclusions in the form of similarities and differences between each story. The written portion of the assignment required us to further analyze the information from the news article to respond to questions regarding the Sixties Scoop, where we had to consider other perspectives in order to draw conclusions. An area of strength for me regarding this core competency and this assignment is keeping an open mind in order to consider other perspectives. An area of growth includes asking open-ended questions to improve my ability to interpret information in different ways than how I usually do.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Some guitar skills I have shown success with this year are my solo abilities due to learning about and practicing different scales on the guitar. Some skills I would like to improve on include my barre chords and my ability to memorize the notes of each guitar string, as well as memorizing the notes that make up different scales so I can use them easily. I will do this by testing myself on my knowledge by making the chord shapes in different scales and looking at their name, so that when I see a chord or am told to make one, I know what shape it is on the scale. My plans for the future in terms of guitar are to continue playing in my free time and improve on my own as it is one of my hobbies.

Communication Core Competency – Collaboration

In group performances, I tried to make sure that all members of my group maximized our time so we had enough opportunity to work out any problems before a performance. I noticed that I often initiated conversation as to what was or wasn’t working, and we all worked together to count out timing so that we were all playing together. The process of practicing started with trying it a few times to see what needed improvement, and then working through those sections slowly and repeatedly before we combined all sections to create our full performance. We would drill the full performance back to back to ensure we could do it multiple times in a row, and if not, we understood that we still needed to practice.

English 11 Poetry Reflection

My Poem

My poem on the sun.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

The overall purpose of the poem was to personify the sun to show its importance to me in different aspects of my life. While writing this poem, I didn’t have a specific audience in mind, but rather anybody who might overlook the beauty of the sun and its impact. I am personally connected to this poem because I frequently recognize the sun as a source of comfort in my life because of the memories it brings and the reason it gives me day-to-day. I started this poem by reading other poems on inanimate objects or untouchable things to gain inspiration on how one thing can be described with such detail. I then started jotting down lines for a poem draft to practice making metaphors and personifying the sun. I kept some lines, and some new ones flowed naturally until I was satisfied and it had an easy flow that was engaging to follow. I used imagery in this poem by describing nature throughout the poem as examples of what the sun brings, helps, and accompanies.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection

I chose this topic because I was asked the question, “What is something small in daily life that brings you joy?” From that question, I thought of the sun because I have always found joy in it, especially now, because I notice it more intentionally since Spring is transitioning into Summer. I developed my ideas by making a draft copy of my poem first to practice personification that connected to my experiences and feelings towards this topic. The strategies that helped me stimulate my imagination was listening to songs I usually listen to in Spring and Summer because they remind me of moments I’ve spent in the sun listening to those songs, so it jogged my memory and my imagination.

Inductive and Deductive Explorations: Is Water Wet?

Questioning and Investigating: Critical and Reflective Thinking

My conjecture: Water is not wet because of the way adhesive and cohesive forces define “wet”, but it depends on how “wet” is defined.

  • If “wet” is defined as: a liquid is sticking to a surface of a material
  • Cohesive and adhesive forces define wet and dry objects.
  • Cohesive: attractive forces within the liquid
  • Adhesive: attractive forces between the liquid and the surface
  • If there is strong cohesive forces, molecules will stick together and won’t spread onto a surface.
  • If there is strong adhesive forces, molecules will spread out onto a surface.
  • If adhesive forces overpower cohesive, a surface will become wet
  • If cohesive forces overpower adhesive, a surface will remain dry (liquid will bead)
  • Water has high cohesive forces due to hydrogen bonding and doesn’t wet surfaces as well as other liquids.
  • Different materials are affected differently by water, and different liquids can weaken or strengthen cohesive or adhesive forces, changing waters ability to make surfaces wet, therefore water can’t be defined as wet when the principles of water can be changed.

(Deductive Reasoning)

Counter argument: Water is wet because if wet is defined as “made of liquid”, all liquids are wet.

Spanish Reflection

El Artefacto

Core competency Reflection

Prompt 1 – Communicating

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. For example, in my Spanish conversation, I organized the order of the script in my notebook and shared it with my partner to make sure we both understood what we were replying to, and we both had equal speaking time. In general, I can transfer the information I learn in class onto tests and assignments in a clear way because I study hard and I complete all my homework in order to understand each concept to the best of my abilities.

Prompt 2 – Collaborating

I can take on roles and responsibilities in a group; I do my share. In my Spanish conversation, I volunteered to write the script in my notebook and I researched some words to make sure we understood what we were saying and pronouncing, in order to continue the conversation. In general, I always volunteer to take on roles and begin conversations with questioning partners what they would like to do, as I am flexible and my main goal is to make sure the work gets done.

Prompt 3 – Social Awareness and Responsibility

I can be kind to others, and support others when they need it. When working with my partner, I noticed some words were not being pronounced correctly so I tried to assist them in pronouncing them correctly or breaking down the word in a way that might’ve been easier. In general, I send homework and lessons to people who have missed a class, and I stay positive in class.

Goal – Critical & Reflective Thinking

I need to work on asking open-ended questions to gather information because when doing this project, I knew I wasn’t 100% confident in my own pronunciation, but I didn’t confirm, and rather used my judgement to assume how to pronounce some words, and I wasn’t correct. In general, I often refrain from asking questions because I like to attempt to understand concepts myself or find ways to answer my questions before I get assistance, but if I fail, sometimes I convince myself it’s too late to ask for help or I just don’t have the confidence to.
