English 11 Poetry Reflection

My Poem

My poem on the sun.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

The overall purpose of the poem was to personify the sun to show its importance to me in different aspects of my life. While writing this poem, I didn’t have a specific audience in mind, but rather anybody who might overlook the beauty of the sun and its impact. I am personally connected to this poem because I frequently recognize the sun as a source of comfort in my life because of the memories it brings and the reason it gives me day-to-day. I started this poem by reading other poems on inanimate objects or untouchable things to gain inspiration on how one thing can be described with such detail. I then started jotting down lines for a poem draft to practice making metaphors and personifying the sun. I kept some lines, and some new ones flowed naturally until I was satisfied and it had an easy flow that was engaging to follow. I used imagery in this poem by describing nature throughout the poem as examples of what the sun brings, helps, and accompanies.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection

I chose this topic because I was asked the question, “What is something small in daily life that brings you joy?” From that question, I thought of the sun because I have always found joy in it, especially now, because I notice it more intentionally since Spring is transitioning into Summer. I developed my ideas by making a draft copy of my poem first to practice personification that connected to my experiences and feelings towards this topic. The strategies that helped me stimulate my imagination was listening to songs I usually listen to in Spring and Summer because they remind me of moments I’ve spent in the sun listening to those songs, so it jogged my memory and my imagination.
