I chose the Tanuki( Racoon dog) as my yokai. I chose Tanuki because it is a racoon who wears a straw hat and goes around pranking others.
Characteristics of the Tanuki is to possess humans into eating large amounts of food even if its gone bad and the victims don’t get any of the nutrition from all the eating it all goes to the Tanuki and it makes them keep eating until the one possessed eventually dies of malnutrition. This is commonly done from the Tanuki if the person and either destroyed the Tanukis habitat or to just prank people for fun.
I don’t think Japanese Yokai and western creatures differ each other much. The reason for this is because both of them take inspiration from real world things such as animals like dragons or the tanuki whos a racoon. Another reason they are alike is because they are both linked with something regarding your fate such as seeing a Leprechaun is supposed to be good luck.
I don’t believe in Yokais. I don’t because I don’t think a racoon would make me eat tons of food and eventually starve me to death just for the fun of it, and i’ve never had a racoon attempt to do anything like that to me either.
