LAW 12 – Core Competency Edublog Reflection

CRITICAL AND REFLECTIVE THINKING

I believe that our criminal justice system should be more punitive rather than rehabilitative for a few different reasons. Rehabilitation can be a difficult goal to pursue as not all criminals want to be healed and there are always going to be repeat offenders. And rehabilitation could be better for the community as a whole but may not provide the victim (or their family) with a sense that justice was served. Punitive damages (or punishment) focuses more on the victim than the criminal and can also provide a deterrent for others offenders. The best case scenario would bring in components of both punitive damages and rehabilitation.

Core Competency – I can analyze my own beliefs and consider views that do not fit with them.

I realize that I am only one opinion and so I should be open to hearing what others think too. It is always important to hear both sides of argument so that you can appreciate the strengths and weaknesses in your viewpoint, and in others’ too.

Diffusion Lab-Self Assessment

Collaborating: I can work with others to achieve a goal

In this cell lab experiment, my group worked together to learn about the process of diffusion, using different substances and a dialysis tube that acted as a semi-permeable membrane. Communication with my group led to our completion of a successful lab. I was responsible for helping set up the starch cell for part A of the lab and writing results. Our group also came together to discuss the questions in the lab, where I helped give us a better understanding of the outcome. This demonstrated our ability to collaborate and helped us achieve our experiment with proper outcomes.

Creative Thinking: I can form new ideas and build on the ideas of others.

When recording results and looking at discussion questions, I came up with good ideas and shared/talked about them with my group, along with their thoughts. I participated in coming up with good explanations with my group, based on the lab. If I was confused I asked my group to obtain a better understanding on the matter at hand. Along with all of this, my group worked off of each other, coming up with new ideas or improving old ones, based on things said before by others. This showed our ability to work off of each other, coming up with more creative ideas and improve each others knowledge.

French 11 Movie Poster

I collaborated with my group for making this project. We chose to make our project based on Despicable Me the movie. I participated in writing the summary of the movie, and helping design the poster. By using creative thinking i was able to come up with multiple ways to show what i learned in the chapter. I chose to work in a group environment because i like to come up with ideas using a the entire groups thoughts on what to do. I can communicate my learning and with others to get work done. I enjoyed the creative part within the project, helping come up with artistic designing ideas for the poster.

Titration Lab

A titration is a base being added to an acid to find the neutralization point. The difference between other methods and this method is that a more accurate tool, called a buret, to add the base into the acid. The reason this is more accurate is because you can add the base slowly, using half drops, making it more controllable to use. This is also important because it is a fine line from having too little, to having too much, so the smaller drops makes it easier. The titration was used to figure out the neutralization point of both NAOH and HCL. I knew when i reached the end of the titration because after mixing a bit i can leave it for 30 seconds and a very slight pink tint will show in the clear mix for that amount of time. If it didnt last 30 seconds, I would put in more. And if it went too dark of a pink, I would move to the next trial and start again.

Core Competency Reflection

I worked well with my group, using communication to talk through what we think we should do. We shared information and discussed on what to de on the next trial that maybe we didnt do good enough on last trial. I worked well with my group by not having any complications, and talking through to figure out what to do if there was one.

Physics 11 edublog lab

Content Reflect

For this lab we worked with a group and learned about waves. Using the slinkies helped me understand how it worked, being a good physical example. I then worked with my group to answer through a sheet of questions. I think I worked well with my group, discussing through our answers together.

Competency Reflection

If there is a disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to talk about each of our answers/thoughts and discuss with the group on what we should settle with for an answer. This usually fixes situations and we come up with an answer together.

Chapter 3 Parabola Assignment

y=a(x-h)^2+k

Equation: 𝑦=4(𝑥−3)^2−6

Equation: y=x^2

The difference between the two parabola’s are determined from the variables a, h, and k. The a represents the width of the parabola, and if it opens up or down. Since a=4 in my equation, it opens up and makes it more narrow. The h represents the axis of symmetry, and if the parabola is on the left or right. h=3 so my axis of symmetry is x=3. Finally, k represents if the vertex is below or above 0 (vertical shift), k=-6 on my parabola so my vertex has a y of -6.

SELF-ASSESSMENT

In the above assignment, I took two equations and presented them as parabolas in a graph format. Then I followed up with a write up which allowed me to explain their differences. I used relevant vocabulary such as variables, axis of symmetry, and vertex to help me better explain my interpretation of the parabolas. I used formatting in my graph (selecting the colors blue and green to highlight each parabola) and also in my explanation (using certain colors for parts of the equation) in hopes that this will provide a clearer explanation.

Linear System Group Assignment

Purpose

The purpose of the assignment was for our group to create a linear system that would have two non-parallel diagonal lines. We then had to show how to graph it and solve it algebraically.

Curricular Response

My group used mathematical vocabulary a bit to make it easier to understand what we are explaining to each other. We talked about the equations using words like variable, coefficient, and constant so we would know what part of the equation to change. We also said where the point of intersection was of line A and line B and decided on using the substitution method. I think it is really important to use clear mathematical terms when talking about something like this so anyone can understand and is on the same page. We thought it would be more interesting to use two positive slope equations making it unique. we first started with the solution (-3,3) and from there create Line A and B passing through that point. We did that because we thought it would be easier instead of creating two lines that might end up having a fraction as the solution making it more complicated. For solving it algebraically, we used the substitution method because the Y’s were already isolated making it easy to put one equation into the other. We all agreed together on these choices and made the process overall quicker and easier.

Core Competencies Self-Assessment

Working in a group, I can recognize different points of view and disagree respectfully. It is important to allow every group member a chance to contribute but we also do not have to agree with each other. Having different thoughts on tasks can create a discussion as to what might the best solution. It also helps identifies pros and cons for group decisions that may have gone unnoticed. I find it easy to be a part of a group as the work can be split up between the group members. It is important though to decide who is handling what tasks so that everyone is contributing to the project. Sometimes you will get group members who do not help out as much as the others so it important to have open communication.
