Halloween Treats

My Reflection

This was a really fun lab to do. On Halloween, everyone had to choose what Halloween dessert they were going to make with their partner. My partner and I decided to make mummy brownies. The brownie recipe was easy to follow and make. When we made our brownies, we had store them on the shelf for the next day when we were going to decorate and eat them. The brownies were sort of hard the next day because I didn’t put saran wrap on them because the pan was still hot. Also, when I was trying to get the brownies out of the pan, some of them stuck to the bottom of the pan which wasn’t good but luckily it wasn’t a lot. For the icing, we just used pre made icing which we just squeezed back and forth. There wasn’t enough candy eyes for all of our brownies so we decided not to put them on. I think that the brownies tasted really good because they were still chewy and soft in the middle even though they were hard on the outside. I would probably make this recipe again but there are also so many other brownie recipes that are out there.

Pasta

My Reflection

For this lab, we had to cooked boxed pasta but decide what sauce we were going to make and what ingredients we were going to put in our pasta. My partner and I decided to make a cheese sauce and put in spinach and bacon. I have made cheese sauces before so it wasn’t that hard to make. I thought that it turned out well because the sauce was thick and it was flavorful, the pasta was al dente, the bacon was fully cooked, the spinach was well sautéed and overall it tasted pretty good. I would make this recipe again and would also try a new sauce and add some new things in with the pasta.

Risotto Balls

My Reflection

The day we made our risotto, we saved some of it to make risotto balls the next day. We had to roll the risotto into a ball, then roll it in and egg then in breadcrumbs. If you wanted to, you could also put cheese inside the ball to. We then fried the risotto balls in a pan with lots of oil. While frying my risotto balls, the oil kept splashing up which was annoying. In the end, they turned out great because they were fully fried and crunchy. I this lab, I worked well independently and learned how to make these so that I could possibly make them again in the future. The only thing I didn’t enjoy about this lab was that when I was cooking them in the oil, the oil kept splashing out of the pan onto me. I would definitely make this recipe again because they are easy to make, don’t take very long and taste really good.

Chili and Corn Bread

My Reflection

This lab was a two day lab. On the first day we made our chili and on the second day we made our corn bread. In our chili we had the choice of using beef or quinoa, I chose beef. I didn’t find the chili that hard to make because the recipe wasn’t that complicated. I would make this recipe again but I would add more tomato sauce because it was a little bit dry. I thought that the chili tasted really good because everything was fully cooked, and it was flavorful and spicy. Making the corn bread was also easy because there was just a few ingredients. I thought that the bread turned out well because it was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. I would also make this recipe again.

Thin Crust Pizza

My Reflection

This lab was spread out over two days. On the first day we made the dough which didn’t take that long and then on the second day we got to construct our pizza. I found it kind of hard to roll out the pizza dough to make it thin because it kept breaking. On my pizza I added tomato sauce, salami, basil, and cheese. I thought that the shape of my pizza wasn’t that great but it tasted quite good. If I could improve on anything, it would be to cook the pizza for a bit longer because my crust wasn’t really crunchy. I would definitely make this recipe again.

Risotto

My Reflection

I have ate lots of risotto before but have never made it. Making this dish required a lot of patience because we had to cook the rice for about 25 minutes while adding broth to it. In my risotto, my partner and I added mushrooms because they go well with it but there are also different foods you can add in it to. My rice turned out well because it wasn’t too mushy and it was fully cooked and it was rich in flavor. I definitely would make and eat this again but I would cut the mushrooms into smaller sizes and add different flavors to.

Buddha Bowl

My Reflection

I really enjoyed this lab because we got to design our own bowls. Buddha bowls are very visually appealing so I decided to use colorful fruits and veggies and use a variety of knife cuts to meet this product standard. In my bowl, I put in mango, carrots, spinach, roasted red pepper, celery, avocado, sunflower seeds and brown rice which was under all the veggies and fruit. I would eat this again but try different veggies and fruit and not roast or cook a veggie because I didn’t really enjoy how it tasted.

Breakfast Home Lab

My Reflection

For this lab, we were asked to make two different breakfast recipes and a smoothie at home to share with out family. I decided to make crepes, omelettes ( cooked in muffin tins) and a mixed berry smoothie. I have never made crepes before so it was a bit of a challenge. The first crepe didn’t turn out very well but the rest after did. They turned out well because they were thin, fully cooked and tasted sweet. For the muffin omelettes, I diced veggies and grated cheese to put at the bottom of the muffin liners and then poured the beaten egg on top. These weren’t too hard to make for me because I have made them before. The omelettes turned out well because they were fully cooked and very flavorful. The easiest recipe to make was the mixed berry smoothie. I have made tons of smoothies before so it was super easy. In the smoothie, I added frozen berries, almond milk, yogurt, honey and protein powder. The smoothie tasted amazing and everything got blended together so there were no chunks. This lab challenged me to be organized, work independently and to manage my time wisely. I would definitely make these recipes again.

Broccoli and Cauliflower Cheese Soup

My Reflection

For this lab, we were given four cream based soups to chose from. My partner and I chose to make a broccoli and cauliflower cheese soup. I have never made a cream soup before, so I found it a little challenging but it was fun. When we made the soup, we chopped up all the veggies and added the liquid. The soup was then chunky so we used an immersion blender that made it smooth. My partner and I worked well together to make this recipe because we planned out who was going to be responsible for what and it made us be more organized. I also got to practice more of my knife skills. I thought the soup turned out well because it was well seasoned, all the veggies were tender and everything was well blended. I don’t think I would eat this soup again because I didn’t really enjoy the taste but I would recommend it to someone who loves the taste of broccoli and cauliflower.

Miso Udon Noodle Soup

My Reflection

For this lab, we had to make our own broth based soup. My group made a Miso Udon Noodle Soup. We found this recipe online and followed the steps but added a few more ingredients. I thought that this lab challenged us to be organized and follow steps. In our soup, we added green onions, mushrooms, snap peas, carrots, onions, celery, chicken, chicken stalk, and basil (for garnish). I have never made udon noodles before and thought that they were going to be difficult to make, but they weren’t. I thought that the soup turned out well because everything was cooked well, the veggies weren’t cut too big, and it was seasoned well. We could have added less mushrooms because there were a lot and I don’t really like mushrooms. Overall, I think that I worked well with my group members and I followed the directions to make the soup.
