About the Activity
Mr. Sam George, an aboriginal elder who survived the St. Paul residential school, came to our school to talk about his past experiences. In his youth life, he was stripped way of his culture and rights, and endured many kinds of abuse throughout his residential school. He talked about how his trauma affected his life after he was released from residential school. He is sharing his story to let people know how aboriginal people are treated and to raise awareness of these cruel acts like the residential schools.
Core Competency Reflection
I can work to inform myself about issues surrounding me.
I was interested in Mr. Sane George’s story because I knew about the residential schools and I wanted to learn more about it from a personal point of view. I know the racism to aboriginal is a problem, so I learned more abut the details.
I can understand that learning is continuous and my identity will continue to evolve.
I learned more information about residential schools even though I have been learning about it since middle school. Now, I have more care about the issues surrounding aboriginal people and respect the elders more.
I can demonstrate respectful, inclusive behaviour.
I did not go on my phone or talk about something other than the presentation while listening to Mr. Sam George’s story. I was deeply interested in his story and respected the topic he was talking about. I also talked about his story with my friends after the presentation.
I can think about what I am going to convey and to whom I will convey it.
I knew beforehand that the presentation would be serious, so I prepared for it by thinking of how I would act and listen to the presentation. I wanted to talk about his story with my friends and parents and I did talk to them about it.
One goal I have for myself
I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.
I can listen to people, but I find it difficult to ask questions. I would like to ask and respond to questions more actively to show that I really am interested in what someone is saying. I will try to think more about someone’s words and think of good/thoughtful questions I could ask without being shy to actually ask it.
