Crucible essay

To better understand characters in the Crucible and their motivation for behavior, one must only refer to Kohlberg’s Moral Precepts for explanations. Kohlberg’s theory of moral development outlines three main stages: pre conventional, conventional, and post conventional. By analyzing the actions and choices of the characters, it becomes clear that their behaviors correspond to the three stages, illuminating their moral reasoning and motivations—from self-preservation, to conformity, and finally, to a commitment to their own values.

There are many pre-conventional characters found in the Crucible. Pre-conventional characters behave in a way to maximize reward and/or minimize punishment with no regard for group acceptance or personal values. The first pre conventional character to discuss is betty goodman. While Governor Parris and the girls are talking about going out into the woods and dancing, she makes a pretense of being asleep. Betty is acting like she is asleep in order to escape being hanged or whipped to death, which demonstrates pre-conventional behavior. While Betty manages to evade punishment and blend in with the group, Act 1, Scene 3, the calling-out scene, features the statement, “I saw George Jacobs with the devil.” Betty uses the girls’ words to her advantage to get out of her penalty and obtain a reward. Another example of a preconventional character is John Proctor. John proctor is A dishonest man who had an affair with Abigail Williams. He tells lies to maintain his high standing in the village and avoid being held accountable for his affair. He makes himself and Abigail believe he did not have an affair because he is so worried about what other people will think of him and his wife: “But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby”. My final example of a pre-conventional character found in Aruth millers play the crucible is Tituba. Tituba falsely confesses to plotting with the devil and claims to have seen others with him under the prospect of harsh punishment from Parris, who threatened to “whip [her] to [her] death” if she did not confess. She understands that she can save herself from execution if she gives them what they want to hear. Tituba decides to make up her confession to escape the lethal consequences of her situation.

There are many characters in the Crucible that are conventional. Conventional behavior is when you behave in a way that suggests you want group acceptance and to fit into that group. The first conventional character to be discussed is Mary Warren. In an attempt to protect herself, she often behaved like the other girls. Mary finally acknowledged that what she was doing was dishonest. She said that “everyone cried, spirits, spirits!” and felt compelled to participate in the group’s lies. although she ends up lying again later in this scene, saying that John Proctor is the devil’s man to fit back into the girls group. Another character that is conventional is Elizabeth Proctor. Her husband John Proctor’s statement that “She has never lied” suggests that. Elizabeth thinks of herself as a strong Christian woman because she believes this to be the case. Her goal is to be the village’s most devoted person. She thus provides solid proof that she is a good Christian and will blend in with the group of good Christian ladies if it is assumed that she has never lied in her life. The Crucible features many characters that are best characterized as conventional, My finial conventional character from the crucible is Thomas Putnam. Thomas Putnam is another example of a conventional character. His conformist behavior is evident when he manipulates Parris by saying, “Don’t you understand it, sir? There is a murdering witch among us…” Faced with the mysterious deaths of his seven children, Putnam deflects Parris’ suspicions by attributing the tragedies to witchcraft. This behavior underscores Putnam’s adherence to conventional thinking, driven by his fear that he and his wife might be suspected of witchcraft themselves. Consequently, he promotes the notion of witchcraft and urges Parris to endorse the witchcraft allegations, “The Crucible” features numerous characters who exhibit conventional behavior.

Apart from pre-conventional and conventional characters, post-conventional characters are also included in The Crucible. Post-conventional behavior is when one develops their own set of morals and is no longer swayed by punishment, reward, or external opinions. The first post-conventional character is Elizabeth Proctor is the initial illustration of a post-conventional character. Elizabeth gives an example of this when she perjures herself in court and responds, “No, sir,” when asked if John Proctor, her husband, had engaged in lechery. Elizabeth’s actions demonstrate how she developed her own moral principles by putting her marriage and spouse above her integrity. The consequences of lying under oath or the opinions of others did not influence her choice to stand up for John. My second post conventional character is John hale. John hale demonstrates this by announcing in public that he “quits this court,” he walks out of the chamber without giving it any thought. The court was unquestioningly accepting the statements of young girls who were fabricating stories about people being possessed and locking up innocent individuals without providing any concrete proof. Hale desired to stop interacting with the court because he was dissatisfied with the injustice. He could not have departed a high-status position at that time if he had been terrified of penalty, reward, or group acceptability. My final example of a post-conventional character in Aruthur millers play the crucible is John Proctor. John proctor who boldly tells the town’s minister, the highest theocratic authority, that he “hardly mentions God anymore.” Such a provocative statement risks damaging his reputation or even provoking retribution from the minister himself.

“The Crucible” serves as a prime illustration of how Kohlberg’s moral stages reflect different phases of life, demonstrating that each level of behavior—pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional—builds on the one before it. A critical analysis of the play is essential to avoid misinterpretations of behaviors that might initially appear irrational. The characters are distinctly human; their actions are authentically flawed yet perfectly representative of real-world thoughts and experiences.

Economics 12 core competency reflection

communicating

I believe that I have shown communication in multiple ways over this term. and one of them being in the currency project. On day 1, I will say that when we got into the group, it was awkward, and I knew right away that it was important to break the ice and introduce each other. We broke that ice of tension and got straight to work. we started off by splitting up the jobs for the project, and then we started to brainstorm and talk about any ideas we have for the project every one was heard and no one was cut off. One thing I also did was check up on my partners while they were working to make sure that they were staying up to the timeline so that we could finish the project on time. I believe that these interactions I have just stated all show that I have communicated very well with my peers during this term.

I can communicatee and listen to people when I need to and I believe that I showed this in my marketing mix final project. my partner and I had to communicate and take Critzism from each other it took some and there were tons of arguments on how we should make the PowerPoint and how we should present. But we both talked and discussed on how we should make it. We both listened to our idea and I would say we did an excellent job on the project.

My Paper

Writing process

When I first started this assignment I knew it would be a difficult topic as I know my father dose not like to talk about his past but once he agreed to it became much more easy I had my questions down which had me all setup for the interview they were a mix of open ended questions and closed. but once I finished the interview I had to face a new challenge which was trying to my information into essay form I would say this is the apart I did not succeed in as it was very hard to follow along in my essay which was the major mistake in this whole process but once I edited it became a much easier to read in some cases.

Core Competency Reflection

I show that I value feedback from others in my group i showed this in the essay because in the being when we first did the rough drafts of the essay there was lots of feed back which was mostly the quotes and spelling errors and once I got the rough draft and made my finial copy I fixed both of those.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus I take 15 minutes brain breaks while doing the finial copy of my essay I would get very self conscious on how I was writing and if it was all making sense because I did recessive a lot of information, taking those 15 minutes breaks helped me re-focus and get a better version of myself to write my essay.

I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when we had to read our peer edited essay I got so much information why it was not good which helped me of course but was very frustrating at the time but it did help me in the end.

I can contribute to and work with criteria to improve my own work; evidence of that is… When I received my assignment back for developing questions, I used those corrections to adjust my questions to improve my interviews and final essay draft.

One goal for yourself going forward a Goal I wish to setup for my self is to take more time for our next essay as I did hand in my essay early their were some major mistakes in the essay for an example my essay was not very structured which made it hard to read. but as if I took my time with my essay I could of got another person to read preferably an adult and they could of told which could of resulted in a much more structured essay

Collaborating

I picked my partner knowing me and him would work well together. from when we were assigned the conversation we both tried to work on it when ever we had spare time which resolved in us finishing it during the winter break we had arguments on how we should start the conversation and how we should end the conversation, But we both communicated and got over the problem. I would also like to point out that we both put an even amount of work into the script and I think I can speak for both of us saying we are happy with the outcome.

Life Saving Measures

My 3 takeaways from CPR are that CPR is very stressful for the person giving it, and it puts a lot of pressure on them. CPR isn’t a hard thing to learn but when it comes to actually saving a persons life, it is very hard on the body for both people. Call 911 or ask for an AED, if there are other people you can ask others people to help so everything can be less stressfull.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence and make judgements by focusing on what the task is at hand, quickly brainstorm what I can do about a situation, and take action with the judgement i have made. This competency relates to me because i can usually quickly think about what i should do while I’m in high pressure situations.

Collaborating

The project that I am using to showcase me collaborating is the Housing project. I have displayed my skills in collaborating in this project in multiple ways I think the most important part of it all was how me and my partner worked together from the early start of that project. We both brainstormed on what we wanted the house and all the rooms to look like and we never shutdown another persons idea because we were focused on wanting to make a plan on how we could get the project done by the due date and get a good grade at the same time.we also put a lot of work into the housing project even after class it is safe to say we both put in an even distributed amount of work. another reason why this showcases me collaborating is because when we were making our plan to get a good grade we split the work into two parts I was in charged of the architecture because we both knew that I would do a good job on that and I knew that my partner would do a good job on the written portion and that is the big part of collaborating is the fact that we had faith in each other and we both knew that we would put in hard effort into the project to get a good grade and even when were stuck or confused we listen to each other and collaborated and got the job done.

o What was a challenge/obstacle you encountered when working on your core competency skill? i had a challenge at the end of the project because for the class party we had a limit of 2500$ and you had to use all of it with that you had to pick a venue and an activity and was kind of hard to do with only 2500$ but enjoyed it. and finished it.

o What did you learn? I learned that planning a class party / work party can be very difficult and cost’s a good amount of money

o How can you apply this skill in your everyday life? I can apply it because I thought I was not able to do this project in a day but I realized if I put my head to anything I do I can get it done which shows because I got this project done .

o Why is this skill important for everyday life? I think it is important because in careers i have realized that this class preparers us for the future And i feel like i learned that in this project.
