Textiles Core Competency Self-Assessment

My Artifact:

This is a midi evening dress I made including a zipper and bow.

Explanation:

While creating this project, I used the core competency “critical/reflective thinking.” This is because I had to use problem solving strategies. I knew that the pattern I bought wasn’t going to fit me how I wanted. Because of this, I thought that it would be a good idea to sew in a bow. Wanting it to appear professional, I made sure to sew it into the side seams of the dress. After doing so, the dress fit me perfectly and turned out how I hoped it would. The only thing I would improve on for next time is the bottom hem. I think I could have made it less bulky, which would result in it weighing the dress down less. Otherwise I am extremely happy with the finished product and think it is something I would wear.

Connecting Media and Psychological Disorder Mind Map Reflection

The first competency I used while creating this project was “I can analyze evidence to make judgments.” I had to find a piece of media, my song, then examined it in means of finding a connection to psychological disorders. I then came to the conclusion that the song “Creature Comfort” by Arcade Fire relates to body dysmorphic disorder.

“I get ideas when I use my five senses to explore or when I pursue my interests” was the second competency I demonstrated. I remember listening to this song on the radio frequently when I was younger. The lyrics interested me because I understood the story the artist was telling.

The final competency I used was “I deliberately learn about things that interest me, and new ideas pop into my head.” I knew that I wanted to focus on OCD and body dysmorphic disorder for my mind map, so I made sure to choose a media that correlated with those. As I was educating myself on said disorders, I began to develop knew ideas as to why I chose my media and how it conveyed certain messages.

Thinking: Critical/Reflective Thinking

My Artifact: Three Tiered Cotton Skirt

While completing this project I used the core competency Thinking, specifically critical/reflective thinking. When creating my pattern on my fabric, I realized that I didn’t have enough material to properly follow the YouTube pattern I was using. To fix this, I used problem solving strategies by making the longest tier a few inches shorter. This only affected the amount of ruffle/gathering created. Because I worked on this project independently, the only feedback I received was to use a different thread. My previous thread was over 50 years old, meaning it wasn’t strong enough, would break when you pulled at it, and wasn’t staying threaded in my machine. Instead, I used the school’s thread After finding the YouTube video that I used for this piece, I watched it over a few times and looked at the description to see what supplies would be needed. As I got my materials from the fabric store, I made sure to double check with the workers that I was grabbing the correct fabric. The only aspect I would improve on for next time would be to distribute my gathering more evenly. I think what would help would be to divide the basting stitch into quadrants, so that there isn’t as much fabric to work with.

Research Assignment Reflection

I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.

While completing my research assignment, I feel that I used the core competency “I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener” because I had to take other’s views into consideration. To support my hypothesis that eating breakfast results in better grades, I had to create a questionnaire asking peers about specific details in their lives. Next, I observed the answers given, essentially listening to my respondent’s perspectives. Finally, I took each answer and applied it to my experiment through mean, median/mode, standard deviation, and a scatter plot. Through those statistics, I concluded that eating and/or not eating breakfast does not affect your marks.

Spanish Dialogue

I feel that I used the collaborating competency while completing my first Spanish script. Because we had to work collectively as a group while we wrote our dialogue, it lead me to use those teamwork skills. I was unacquainted with two of the group members I was working with, meaning we had to get our assignment done during class. Each of us shared our ideas and thoughts on what our script could be about. We all came up with ideas, as well as made sure that we met all of the criteria. I feel that I also used my communicating skills because not only did I have to meet two new people, I also presented this to the class.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my Marrow Thieves essay. I gathered important information that I resonated with after reading The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, and was able to portray it in a clear and concise paragraph. I discussed what I thought was the most prominent theme in the book, family and coming of age, and provided examples from the text. I expanded on those quotes, as well as used a comprehensible writing format.

Creative Thinking Skills

My Artifact: These are the two sgraffito mugs I created in my Ceramics class.

I demonstrated my creative thinking skills by developing ideas. It took me quite a bit of time and planning to come up with the designs I wanted to use. I researched and sought out inspiration for winter-themed mugs by looking around my environment and seeing what felt like Christmas to me. Once I had concise concrete ideas, I then went through the process of illustrating those objectives onto a planning sheet. Eventually I had a solid and flexible plan to then begin to sgraffito it onto the clay.

Curricular Competencies Reflection:

I feel that as I was writing my Pocahontas synthesis, I was improving in my creating communicating skills. As I have stated before, I have trouble with comprehension. Although I feel that after completing this project, it has allowed me to use the said skills that I have learned in my day to day life. Because of this, I have had practice with the aspects that I struggled with in comprehension, which then lead to me improve upon those skills. While comparing the Pocahontas movie, as well as the articles about the real Pocahontas story, I discovered a great amount about this once innocent children’s tale. I learned that her real name was a 14 year old girl named Matoaka, and was captured, held hostage, and groomed. Without going into great detail about the truth, to put it simply, Matoaka was wronged in countless, horrific ways.

Core Competencies Reflection:

I feel that during my Pocahontas assignment, I grew in the communication core competency, specifically I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. This project lead me to recognize and communicate certain information in a comprehensible manner. Before this synthesis, I was able to produce concise, direct written work; however, I feel as though this one allowed me to dig deeper into the meaning behind certain phrases, pictures, or songs that showed up in the Disney movie. Not only that, but this assignment helped me to improve at conveying particular beliefs I may have.

Critical and Reflective Thinking

A dichotomous key with the buttons on it.
A dichotomous key with a legend for five buttons.

I can analyze evidence to make judgments.

While participating in this activity, I had to carefully and closely observe each and every button. Once I made a judgment, and came to a conclusion on them, I constructed a scientific tool used to determine organisms; a dichotomous key. I gained quick decision making skills, as well as had to use creativity to come up with differing names, which still described the physical characteristics of the buttons. If I did this activity again, I would make each main section extra clear, and come up with more distinct names.
