Examples of where I communicate clearly and purposefully can be seen in my Marrow Thieves essay. I gathered important information that I resonated with after reading The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline, and was able to portray it in a clear and concise paragraph. I discussed what I thought was the most prominent theme in the book, family and coming of age, and provided examples from the text. I expanded on those quotes, as well as used a comprehensible writing format.
I feel that as I was writing my Pocahontas synthesis, I was improving in my creating communicating skills. As I have stated before, I have trouble with comprehension. Although I feel that after completing this project, it has allowed me to use the said skills that I have learned in my day to day life. Because of this, I have had practice with the aspects that I struggled with in comprehension, which then lead to me improve upon those skills. While comparing the Pocahontas movie, as well as the articles about the real Pocahontas story, I discovered a great amount about this once innocent children’s tale. I learned that her real name was a 14 year old girl named Matoaka, and was captured, held hostage, and groomed. Without going into great detail about the truth, to put it simply, Matoaka was wronged in countless, horrific ways.
Core Competencies Reflection:
I feel that during my Pocahontas assignment, I grew in the communication core competency, specifically I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way. This project lead me to recognize and communicate certain information in a comprehensible manner. Before this synthesis, I was able to produce concise, direct written work; however, I feel as though this one allowed me to dig deeper into the meaning behind certain phrases, pictures, or songs that showed up in the Disney movie. Not only that, but this assignment helped me to improve at conveying particular beliefs I may have.
