Core Competency Self-Assessment: Chemistry 12

This activity/lab was done in groups of four and required collaboration skills such as verbal communication, active listening, and of course the ability to have fun. For this lab we were given paper clips, some were linked in pairs and some were by themselves. When we started the timer, two people would take them apart and two people would put them together. My partner and I started to plan ways to put them together in a faster way (verbal communication) as to be better then the others. We both came up with a few different ways (active listening) to link them up. Then it got harder to stay even with our opponents when it became 2v1. In the 2v1 scenario you really have to scramble to keep up which leads to you messing up and arguments happening on whether the paper clip counts or not (having fun). I am sure there are many other ways of putting the paper clips together to make it harder for the other team to take apart, but that would be something I would look into if I was to do something like this again.

Core Competency: Personal Awareness & Responsibility

Over my years of taking math courses, I have found it to be very beneficial for me to have study sheets for different units and topics. My “artifact” is a sample of some of the notes I have taken over the semester of my Calculus 12 course. “A personally aware and responsible individual takes steps to ensure their well-being, sets goals and monitors progress, regulates emotions and manages stress, and recognizes and advocates for their own rights.” This quote is true in the sense that I have been monitoring my progress by using these note sheets and putting them in order of understanding. I do this to prioritize what I need to focus on so I can improve in areas where I am weaker in knowledge. By illustrating graphs in my notes, I have become more aware that I am a visual learner and pick up on things easier when I can see how the theory applies.

Core Competency Self Reflection (Self Regulation)

After watching some slips from the Huberman Lab podcast #96, I wanted to reflect on what kind of a meditator I am. – Interoceptive: Perception of sensations from inside the body and includes the perception of physical sensations related to internal organ function such as heart beat. – Exteroceptive: Sensitivity to stimuli that are outside the body, resulting from the response of specialized sensory cells called exteroceptors to objects and occurrences in the external environment. I think I tend to be more of a Exteroceptive meditator. I find peace and calmness in the outdoors when I am snowboarding in the mountains, camping, or even hiking. I find myself trying to get away from the “sensations inside the body/internal organ function,” with school I almost have Interoceptive sensations being forced on me in the form of stress. It never feels good, but when I am outside exploring and getting exercise, all my stress and worries go away for a while. For my own personal growth, exteroceptive meditation is the better of the two because I learn more about myself and surroundings. Another way I can calm myself down is through breathing, I do this during meditation as well and its called cyclic breathing. This is a type of breathing that stimulates relaxation and slows your heart rate; therefore calming you down. All you have to do is take deep breaths in and out. Lots of people don’t know this but when you are writing a test, this kind of deep inhale exhale will help get rid of some of the nervousness you feel while taking a test. I have tried this too sometimes and it really helps reset your mind when you can’t remember something or you are not thinking right.

Core Competency Goals

I show others that I truly value their contributions by…

When someone makes or tries to make a contribution to our group I will show my value in one of two way. The first way is if their idea is better than the previous one. I will state, “wait that is actually a great idea,” and follow that up by asking more questions about their idea so we can build off of it. The second way is if the idea will not contribute anything or is not a good idea. I will proceed by showing and explaining either idea so they can clearly see our idea so they understand it better. Then I might also (depending on the situation) deconstruct their idea so they see where the flaw or mistake is in their idea.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I…

Typically, when I am at home if I need to re-focus I will take a 10-15 min break, eat, drink, then go back to it. Sometimes I might do a little work out or go for a bike ride and get some fresh air if I can afford the time.

How do you learn best?

Over my years of education, I have found that I am a very visual learner. As a career path I am looking into engineering, ever since I was little I was always a hands-on learner. With math, we uses whiteboards around our class room and we graph the functions we are working on so we can actually see what the function looks like. It is just easier to actually see what we are working on and not just the theory behind it, this goes with working on cars for me as well.

Fitness & Conditioning 11/12 Reflection

My Artifact

Fitness & Conditioning Reflection

Fitness & Conditioning as well as physical activity, plays a big role in my life for mental health and just staying active. During the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, when everything shut down I fell into this hole with ten foot high walls. I did not know what to do, and since I couldn’t really do anything, I wasn’t able to figure out who I was. Fitness and Conditioning is a class for me to be able to feel good after I am done a work out and not have to worry about if I am not doing enough. The influence physical activity has on me is that I will most definitely need it for the rest of my life and this class is a good learning experience for me to see what my capabilities are and how I can improve.

Core Competence Reflection

  • I work with others to achieve a goal.

I have demonstrated this core competence by working with my partner side by side, pushing each other so we can both reach our goal of working hard and growing in areas we need work on.

  • I participate in activities that support my well-being and take responsibility for my well-being.

I have demonstrated this core competence by participating in class activities and playing with my schools field lacrosse team.

  • I find it easy to be part of a group.

I have demonstrated this core competence by being able to talk to anyone and being able to communicate in a respectful manner,

  • I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals.

I have demonstrated this core competence by using my teacher’s instructions and advice on proper technique and form so I can progress in the areas I am focused on.

This project and presentation helped me develop and demonstrate Core Competencies through interacting with others and being a listener when the teacher is talking. I always take pride in what I and accomplished and look forward into what I can use this for in the future.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking & Creative Thinking

This artifact connects to my Core Competency of Critical and Reflective Thinking & Creative Thinking by showing how I am able develop my ideas through past knowledge. I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas and broaden my thought process so I am able to use what a learn for other problems I am faced with.

Reflection: Identifying the problem of carbon emissions and flight time was pretty easy due to global warming and how planes effect it. I found the problem by looking up how much carbon do planes make and found that planes are responsible for some 11% of the earths carbon emissions. The solution was easy, we need to move to electric planes. There was a team in Vancouver that made a fully electric water plane (see in slide 5) and flew it down a river. I was able to think about they way i wanted the innovation to look and I was also able to create and identify solutions of the problem. Yes I am somewhat satisfied of how I finished the project.

Innovation Station Checklist:

My Digital Footprint

One part of my digital footprint that contributes to the online community is my YouTube Channel. I still have my face and contact info private so my identity is still safe. My YouTube channel will not effect my future in education because they cant see my face and there is more than one Michael. Looking more into the future (Jobs) as long as I don’t truly reveal myself I will be okay if something wrong happens. Googling my name and city i had found a few heat sheets and results from swimming that had my name on them.

Three different strategies that I can use to keep my digital footprint appropriate and safe is keep my channel child friendly, do not expose myself, and post safe images on my social medias. Information that I have learned is to keep family and friends matters private. Going about telling my friends or family to retract something they have said or posted I would either text them or talk to them directly. Same with other students in our school.

Speech Unit Reflection

Something I learned in this experience that i would use again is understanding how something like a computer, consul, or phone works. I also learned that the best thing you think you need is always the most expensive one. The online strategy I found the most effective for making my citations was the Gale Topic Finder. The sources I found the most helpful were the online one because my topic was not really something an author would write in a book. Personally I do not think that I could improve much more on how I researched my topic.
