Crucible Essay

To grasp the characters in “The Crucible” better, consider how they align with Kohlberg’s Moral Development stages. Kohlberg suggests people pass through three phases as they mature: pre conventional, conventional, and post conventional. It’s important to remember that once an individual moves on to the next stage, the previous stage is still inside of them somewhere.

There are many different examples within the literature that showcase different characters being pre conventional. Pre conventional is when someone completes a task, or acts a certain way to avoid punishment or to be rewarded. My first example is when Tituba confesses to something, even though she was not guilty. The reason why she confessed is because Parris states that if she doesn’t confess, he will “take (her) out and whip (her)” to death. Tituba realizes that she has to confess to avoid the punishment. Furthermore, Abigail Williams is a pre conventional character. her pre conventional characteristics were showcased when she says that she “never called (the devil)! tituba” did. Abigail realizes that she needs to act quickly and shift the blame off herself to avoid punishment, which is what she does. Lastly, Betty is a pre conventional character. Betty is shown to be pre conventional when she doesn’t tell the truth and speak up, even though it’s the correct thing to do because Abigail keeps telling her to “shut up!”. Betty wants to avoid punishment, as she knows Abby will punish her in some way if she tells the truth. In conclusion, there are many different characters within the Crucible that showcase pre conventional attributes.

Not only are characters pre conventional, but they are also conventional. Being conventional means you would act a certain way, or do something to fit into a group. Marry Warren is a great example of a conventional character. Marry Warrens conventional side is displayed when she states that she has “no power.” Mary feels trapped by the expectations of others and feels like she cannot make her own choices. She is afraid of going against the powerful people in Salem, so she gives in to what they want, even if it means doing something she knows is wrong, making her conventional. furthermore, John Proctor is a conventional character. This characteristic is shown when Proctor states that he and Abbigail have “never touched.” He doesn’t want to admit to the affair, because he doesn’t want the entire town to hate him. Lastly, Hale is a conventional character. Hales conventional attribute is shown when he says “let him sign it” referring to Proctor signing the confession to witchcraft, even though he knows proctor is innocent, this is conventional because he did this to fit in with the people of the court.

Lastly, there are many examples within the literature that showcase post conventional behaviour. Post conventional behaviour is when you do something you believe in, and you don’t care about the reward, the punishment, or what people might think of you. One example of a post conventional character is Giles Corey. Giles Corey demonstrates his post conventional side when he says “more weight”. This is post conventional as they were torturing Giles Corey to get the name of Mr. X, but Giles Corey stood by what he believed in, and didn’t tell them. Another example of a character with post conventional behaviour is John Proctor. John Proctors post conventional side is when he says “because it’s my name!”. This is post conventional because Proctor would not falsely confess to witchcraft, even though it would save his life. instead he chooses to uphold his integrity and moral principles, valuing his name and reputation over his life. Lastly, Reverend Hale is a post conventional character. Hale is shown to be post conventional when he says “there is blood on my head”. This is post conventional because Hale confronts the court about the wrongful convictions and executions that have occurred due to the witchcraft accusations, because he believes that is the right thing to do and he doesn’t care about the consequences.

In conclusion, it is proven that Kohlberg’s Moral Precepts is useful as a guide to understand the characters in The Crucible and also human development as a whole. This concept that takes us from the pre conventional state, to conventional, then pre conventional helps us understand complex personalities. Pre conventional includes Tituba, Abigail, and Betty, all wanting to avoid punishment or get rewarded for what they have done. Then you have conventional, which includes Proctor, Marry Warren, and Hale, all wanted to be accepted by a group of people, and finally, you have post conventional, the people who don’t care about consequences and are extremely passionate about what they believe in, this list includes Gilles Corey, Proctor, and Hale.

Conics Project

In crafting a digital face for demos, my utilization of hyperbolas, circles, and ellipses required a balance of mathematical precision and a creative touch. One of the significant challenges I encountered was ensuring facial symmetry, a crucial element for a realistic appearance. The task of altering domain and range posed another hurdle, demanding careful adjustments to avoid distortion. To overcome such challenges, I used an abundance of online resources, including watching YouTube tutorials and conducting in-depth research to grasp techniques. These learning sessions provided valuable insights into manipulating mathematical functions effectively. Moreover, my creative thinking core competency played a pivotal role in adding character to the face. I infused the digital creation with a sense of personality, transforming it from a mathematical exercise into a visually compelling representation. The combination of technical know-how and creative insight ultimately yielded a well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing digital face for demonstration purposes.

Core competency

I demonstrated the core competency of communication during the eggs Benedict lab. I showcased my communication skills many times during this lab. One example of my communication skills being put on to display is when my partner Sam already put salt in the hollandaise sauce, and I was not aware of this event, therefore I didn’t know whether or not to add salt to it myself. The simple way to go about this is to communicate, especially while working as a team, communication is key. Although communicating may be the simplest act, it is most definitely the most effective in many different scenarios.

Core Competency Assignment

My project that I will pick to reflect on is the country project where me and Lucas went in depth in researching the economy of Russia. I used the core competency communication during the completion of this project. Firstly, I demonstrated clear writing skills by conveying complex economic concepts and data in a concise and understandable manner. Secondly, my communication competency was evident in my ability to gather and analyze relevant information from different sources, ensuring that all information is accurate.

Self Reflection

I chose the question “how does the artifact you selected demonstrate strengths and growth in the communication competency”. I feel that this assignment helped me grow in the communication aspect of the core competencies as I went from lacking in this area in comparison to the other core competency to excelling in this specific category.

Physics 11 Lab

My group and I looked into the idea of waves. 

Slinkies were used as a physical example, which helped me better understand the subject. 

We answered some questions collectively as a group. 

We actively debated and came to agreement on our responses, therefore I think our teamwork was successful. 

When there was disagreement, I thought it helpful to discuss it honestly and take into account each group member’s viewpoint before coming to a decision.

My Parabola

My equation for my parabola in this assignment, y = 3(x+4)^2 + 5, is compared to the original parabolas equation of y = x^2 in the photo above. A, H, and K are the reasons the two parabolas are different, as my A is 3, making it a skinny parabola compared to the original as it is being stretched 3 units vertically. Another example of this is the H, as my parabolas horizontal shift is -4 compared to the original parabolas 0 on the x axis. Finally, the K is the difference in the parabolas vertical shift, in this case, my parabola has a vertical shift of 5, where as the original parabola is at 0. These shifts cause the vertex to change from (0,0) to (-4,5).

Self-Assessment

  1. I represented three different mathematical ideas by communicating my understanding of All three of A, H, and K.
  2. I used mathematical vocabulary throughout this paragraph, by talking about the vertex, the horizontal shift, and the vertical shift.
  3. I used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way by changing the theme of my edublog and writing in neat paragraphs.

Core Competency Goals

-If there is a disagreement in the group, I find it helpful to vote for which idea is the best, or which would benefit our group the most. I personally think this is a great way to solve conflict as there is nothing you can argue about after the group has voted for, or not voted for something as if most people vote the same thing, it is likely that it’s the best idea.

-When I am sad, angry or frustrated drinking water is one way to calm myself down. I find drinking lots of water is not only refreshing, but is really beneficial to your mental, and physical health. Another tactic I use when im sad, angry or frustrated is take a deep breath. For me personally, taking a deep breath and just reflecting on the situation is best working strategy, as it helps right away and makes you realize that what ever you are angry about, probably isn’t worth being angry about

-I show others that I value feedback from others in my group by thinking about what they are saying, and applying it to my work, even if I decide not to use there feedback I will still be very grateful for there considerate jester as some people would keep there feedback to themselves.

This is not a linear equation. I can tell by the graph as when I do the horizontal line test, it fail, and is also not a straight line . And I could tell it’s not a linear equation as the variable has an exponent of three.

x^2+y^2=16

This is not a linear equation. I can tell by the graph as this fails both the horizontal and vertical line test, and is also not a straight line. And I could tell it’s not a linear equation as the variables have an exponent of two.

This is a linear equation. I can tell by the graph as it passes both tests, and is a straight line. And I could tell its a linear equation from the equation as the variables have an exponent of one

This is a linear equation. I can tell by the graph as it passes both horizontal and vertical line tests, and this is a straight line. I could tell this is a linear equation from the equation as the variables only have an exponent of one.
