Desmos Self Portrait

For my self portrait I used a lot of parabolas, hyperbolas, linear functions and a few ellipses and circles. The parabolas were used in my lips, face and hair, hyperbolas were used in my hair and nose and linear functions were used for my neck, tank top, face, eyebrows. The circles were used for my earrings and eyes as well as the ellipses. I used these functions in specific places since they reflected my features the best. To make sure my functions followed my photo reference I used sliders to help me accurately place them. For my graph I made custom colours to represent my hair and skin tone so the results had more resemblance to me.

Pre Calculus 12 Reflection

Collaboration

Collaboration in this class is mainly used during group work. This problem specifically two groups came together to compare answers and share how the solution was found. The problem was a word problem about a ferris wheels rotation and we had to demonstrate it using sine/cosine graphs. We solved this question by making sure our equation was a cosine so our graph would turn out properly. My group specifically does well when we have group work questions because we collaborate with each other to problem solve and share ideas on how to solve the problem. We rotate the marker to ensure everyone understands the process of solving a specific type of problem. I help by using my phone to read out the problems and use it to bring up the notes. It also is a benefit that I watch the videos so I know the basic ideas of what the questions would be about. I can improve my collaboration skills by going to other groups to see how they solved the problem.

Course Evaluation

  1. I enjoyed the labs the most during this course. I enjoyed them because they were hands on and you got to visually see what’s you were learning about.
  2. I did not enjoy the long note days because I find they are boring. But they are necessary to any course.
  3. No
  4. During the course I improved my microscope skills and basically learned how to use a microscope. It took a couple tries to figure out how to perfectly focus it but I got there eventually.
  5. This course was very note based so I think a way to make the course more interesting would be to make notes more interesting. This could be by making it more interactive
  6. If I could do this course again I would study for the final more than I did. I would also try and read the textbook more than I did.
  7. I do plan to study biology in the future because I want to go into sciences for university.

Transforming Parabolas

Parent Function:

Vertex: (0,0)

Axis of symmetry: x=0

X intercept(s): (0,0)

Y intercept(s): (0,0)

Domain: All Real Numbers

Range: y≥0

Minimum Value: 0

My Equation:

Vertex: (4,2)

Axis of symmetry: x=4

X intercept(s): N/A

Y intercept(s): (0,50)

Domain: All Real Numbers

Range: y≥2

Minimum Value: 2

Comparison:

How my equation differs from the parent function.

My equation has a few transformations that differ from the parent function. First my equation has a vertical shift up two. This can be seen in the photo since the vertex has a y value of 2. It can be seen in my equation by looking at the k value (+2). My equation also has a horizontal shift, this can be seen in the photo since the x value of the vertex is 4. Even though in my equation it is -4 the sign flips since in the preliminary equation it is (x-h) and you can’t have two negatives side by side. Since h starts negative then the -4 turns positive. My parabola is also compressed compared to the parent function. This is because my equation has an a value of 3. This is the coefficient which effects the width of the parabola.

Self Assessment:

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in multiple ways?

I used the graph from Desmos as a visual representation. Each equation had their own photo and one together for comparison. I also wrote out the characteristics of each parabola below their photo to show differences numerically. Then I wrote and described in a paragraph how the two were different.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

I used mathematical vocabulary in this assignment when I was describing the characteristics of the parabolas. (Vertex, axis of symmetry, x intercept, y intercept, domain, range, minimum value.) I also used it in my paragraph. (Transformation, parent function, vertical shift, horizontal shift, preliminary equation, parabola, compressed, coefficient.)

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

I used headings and kept everything in order with the rubric. I kept my graphs to an appropriate size. I made my paragraphs evenly spaced.

IDS Inquiry Reflection

My inquiry question is: How can I cook different foods utilizing different cooking techniques from different cuisines? It hasn’t shifted since my original personal learning plan and I plan to answer this question by May/June. My time management has been useful during cent time since I work on finding recipes to cook/getting inspired. I also use it to format how I want to present my IDS project. Most helpful resources so far has been my mentor teacher and food blog websites/instagram pages. Current challenges I am facing is formatting and building my website and instagram page since it is very time consuming. Also finding recipes that are interesting and I want to cook. I have grown in the Core Competency of critical thinking because I use it a lot in my current stage of IDS. I use it to research and find recipes, formatting my presentation and planning/executing what I want to achieve. I hope to use my IDS as a part of my Capstone next year if it fits with what I want to do.

History 12 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

Is history the story told by the ‘winners’?

Yes, history was more told by the winners in the past but in more modern times we get both sides. It can be seen with the end of WW1 with the Treaty of Versailles as well in the Russian Revolution with the Tsar and Bolsheviks. The question is saying whoever wins the war or battle will write the history books making their win glorified and bias towards them. In regard to who writes history now in modern time history is told by both the winning and losing sides. This can be seen in 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles. Everyone has an opinion, even great leaders in 1919, the Treaty of Versailles is well known for drawing up the terms to end WW1. But, not everyone had a say in what the terms were. Germany for example was punished the hardest from this treaty but the country had no say in what was on the treaty. The terms were negotiated without Germany and the country was eventually forced to sign the treaty causing one reason for WW2 to start 20 years later. But to the allies opinion they made a good treaty and a fair one since Germany caused a lot of damage and death. But we do hear Germany’s side with their resentment for the treaty especially the war guilt cause as they weren’t the country to solely start the war. Seeing this example supports that both sides were heard and recorded. In the Russian Revolution we can see this in the change of government from the Tsar to the Bolsheviks. The Tsar had all the power in earlier Russia with an autocracy government but the Russia Revolution changed that. We can see the change in power with opinions on both. The Tsar didn’t want to give up his power but he was ultimately forced to by the out of control strike in Petrograd. While the Bolsheviks had their time forming their party and showing their want for change with the constant push for it over the years. Again both sides were heard and shown in history books.

I can analyze evidence to form my own judgements

In history specifically I feel like you do this all the time. Because you are always reading about a battle, revolution, someone or something. I believe you are constantly forming judgements and opinions. An example of when I did this would be when we had to analyze and come up with our own example of how a Henry Ford quote relates to modern day. I used this competency for that whole activity and could not complete the task without it.

Core Competency Goal Setting

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus… One of my goals for this semester is to stay focused while completing school related tasks. I can do this by when I feel a need to re-focus that is a signal that I need a break from whatever I’m doing at the moment. Some of my most beneficial ways of doing that is going on walks, talking to my friends and family, or just going to get some food to give me a boost of energy. These activities make me take a mental break from the task needing to be completed so I can come back to it in a better mindset. These strategies will help me bring up my mood and energy to come back to the task being engaged and focused.

Some of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle include… Another goal for me this semester is to be more proactive and having a balanced lifestyle. This is so I feel less stressed and have more time to myself for what I want to do. Some ways I can achieve this is by planning out my schedule, writing down due dates and not waiting till the night before to do assignments. These strategies combined will not only help me get assignments done on time, but help me have more time to myself, go out with friends, and getting a good amount of sleep.

In discussions and conversations, I help to build and extend understanding by… My final goal for this semester is to try and be more active in discussions during class. Normally I am a very quiet student and I am more of a listener. But this year I want to try and participate more to bring out my own ideas and opinions to the class to maybe help them understand more as well. This can be achieved by pushing myself to put my hand up to answer questions. Also, by being more vocal in group discussions to share out with the class. If I can do this I believe it will have a positive impact on my learning.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Social Awareness & Responsibility in CLE 10

My Artifact

Me Card project.pptx

The artifact I chose was my Me Card project. This fits into the Social Awareness & Responsibility competency because it shares information about me and I learned a lot about my classmates through this project. I demonstrated respectful behaviour while listening to my classmates present as well learned about the diversity of interests in the class. A challenge I encountered during this project was finding a bunch of different things about me I wanted to share. Since they all had to be different in each category with little repeats. During this project I learned about the diversity in the classroom when listening to my classmates presentations. The skills from the Social Awareness & Responsibility I can use in everyday life is working in groups and being kind and supportive to others. These skills are used a lot in everyday life since you will always have to work in different kinds of groups to compete tasks. This also is when you could use your kindness and supporting others skills. Because working in a group can be challenging so being kind and supportive is crucial to a successful group. This was seen used in the Me Card project because I was kind and supportive towards my classmates.

Minecraft-Energy Transfer & Transformation

Communication:

Communication was vital in this project because if you didn’t communicate nothing would get done. I think my group did well at talking about what we were building and what we still needed to build like getting all six energies. I think we were good at communicating ideas as mine was to build a train and train station since we needed a second structure. We communicated after school to make sure we would finish in time and set a time to come before school to finish the voice-over portion of the project. Overall I think my group and I did well at communicating throughout the project.

Thinking:

My group and I started our project by thinking about what we wanted to build for our chosen geothermal energy. We ended up choosing a geothermal powerplant. Then, we had to use our critical and creative thinking skills to create ideas on how we can meet all the requirements for the project. I think our group as a whole developed ideas well and worked off different ones too. Personally for me I had to help think of different ideas to be a part of our six different energy transfers or transformations.

Personal and Social

My group and I worked well with all our strengths and weaknesses. With some lack of experience to some missed classes. But I think we all contributed to the project and helped in the most we could. Individually we all were very determined workers and all wanted to exceed in this project. We all individually managed our time well and kept a good working relationship with each other.
