Vocal Jazz Reflection

Communication Competency

This year-end concert was the last concert for the grade 12s. During these times when we were still learning and practicing the music pieces in order to do our best with these songs, while I was working with my fellow vocal jazz ensemble member for our last performance, I contributed to our success by showing up to class everyday on time for our rehearsals, and also by attending flex when I needed help on a piece that I was struggling on. By doing so, I was able to be more confident in the songs I was singing as I could make sure that I was singing the correct notes with the correct rhythm. This contributed to our success of all the songs we sang in vocal jazz as everyone’s voice is important in this ensemble so when we learn and practice our own parts, we can ensure that we can be successful. Additionally, when facing communication challenges during our vocal jazz rehearsals, I learned further that listening to everyone is crucial for any types of ensembles. We are able to work more effectively together when we listen to each other and try to work things out together. By listening to each others opinions on how we should proceed if we are all not sure allowed us to save time. With this, I learned how important everyones voices are important in a group ensemble and how much it can help us work collectively. The feedback I received during rehearsals leading up to our performance influenced my growth by prompting me to ask for help when I need it. When I am given feedback on how what I should to do improve even by a little bit, the feedback given to me by others encouraged me to ask for help if I am struggling with anything. And by listening to the feedback I received, I was able to improve my skills to be a better vocal jazz student. And due to the supportive nature of this ensemble, I became more comfortable when seeking for help compared to previous years. I improved a lot and had a blast in vocal jazz due to the connections we made with each other.

Communication:

For this lab, I was able to demonstrate the skill, communication, because it was an important element of this lab, as well as any other labs conducted. Collaboration and communication were critical in this experiment since this lab could not be completed by a single individual. For example, my partner and I allocated duties so that we could make use of the time we had. By providing roles, we were able to finish this lab with a bit of extra time, allowing me and my partner to discuss the lab questions together. We were able to succeed in this lab because we listened to each other and shared ideas. To improve for the next time, I would want to discuss possible roles with each other, look over the materials and questions a day ahead of time, and begin working on the lab right away, allowing us to make the most of the time we have, and focus solely on the lab without worrying on how much time we had left.

Thinking:

During the process of this lab, a few strategies that I used to solve a problem I faced was simply asking my peers for help. As I sometimes have a hard time remembering stuff, I was not able to remember what tools the teacher used in this experiment. However, I was able to move past that smoothly as I asked the group working next to me for help. By doing this, I wasn’t wasting any time trying to figure things out myself. For next time, something I would do in order to improve would be taking a video of the procedure when the teaching is demonstrating how we would do the lab as it would help me remember all the steps accurately, allowing me to do my best in these labs.

Self-Assessment:

During this lab, I as able to support my peers as whenever they had any troubles or came up to me and my partner for help, we tried our best to help them. By doing this, I was able to strengthen my relationship with my peers which also encouraged me to ask for support to my peers if there is anything that I needed help with. in order to improve for next time, I would try to pay more attention and to remember what I am doing so that I can help my peers with confidence.

Choir Reflection

Communication Competency Reflection

Looking at how much effort the choir had put into rehearsing so that this concert might run as smoothly as possible, I realized that when faced with communication challenges during our choir rehearsals, I learned that the best thing to do is to ask for help. Asking for help is really crucial while performing in an a choir since we must sound as a group rather than as individuals. As Well As if people do not seek assistance when they are in need, it will have an impact on the entire choir. Thus, as a result of my choir experiences over the previous several years, I’ve learned to ask for help whenever I need it with my part in choir, and I’m no longer reluctant to do so.

Being involved with my fellow choir members for our previous concert, I contributed to our success by attending all planned practices as well as extra flex and CENT Time practices. By doing so, we could ensure that we were all confident in ourselves, which made me feel more at ease as our performance days approached. We were also able to develop our collaboration and cooperation abilities by continually communicating with one another.

Furthermore, I was able to grow as a person since the feedback I received following the choir performance influenced my growth by highlighting my strengths and weaknesses. Knowing what I needed to focus on let me to make better use of my flex and CENT time. And by doing so, I was able to broaden my mind by constantly striving to do better rather than simply focusing on what I do well, which overall helped me grow as a person.

Chemistry 12 Core Competency Self-Assessment

I chose the Acids and Base lab as my artifact as I believe this lab has led me to demonstrate my collaborating skills the best. When collaborating with my partner for this Acids and Bases titration lab, we made sure to talk on the day of the lab to ensure that we knew what parts each of us should work on in order to make sure that this lab goes as smoothly as possible. For instance, my lab partner would most pour the solution into a beaker while I would write down the measurements since we each had our strengths and flaws in different areas. Since I usually have slightly shaky hands, we decided that I would write down the measurements while she pours the solution in for the first part of the lab. For the second part of the lab, the actual titrating part, we once again had different parts we played, for example, I worked on swirling the flask while my partner worked on doing drops of NaOH into the solution. By collaborating with each other, we were able to achieve successful results in the lab.

Musical Performance Reflection

Fall concert

Something we worked on during this course that I am proud of is the songs we performed during our fall concert, as I think the 2022 fall concert was one of the best fall concerts we have done. We practiced a lot and I think our final result was pretty impressive, as one of our songs sounded pretty good. In the song, “Don’t get around much anymore,” the last chord we sang sounded really pretty since we practiced it a lot.

Curricular Competencies Reflection

A performance technique or musical skill I have shown success with through this chosen experience would be projecting my voice, as well as learning to breathe correctly when singing. A skill and technique I would like to improve on is still voice projection as I still have trouble with it. I will continue to practice improving my voice projection. My plans for continuing with music in the future would be to join both vocal jazz and concert choir again next year, which would be my final year before I graduate.

Core Competencies Reflection

I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener.

During choir, I ask questions if I don’t understand how to do something, for example, if we were learning a song, and I didn’t know how to sing my part (alto), I would ask for help to understand how to sing that part. On the other hand, I respond to questions that my peers may ask me, for example, if someone didn’t know how to read musical notes, I would help them since I learned how to read notes.

Winter Music Concert

Winter music concert

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Some of the instrumental and musical skills I have shown success with throughout this year are choosing a different instrument to learn as well as being in both band and choir. This year, I chose to play the bass clarinet instead of sticking with the clarinet since I wanted to try something new, and the bass clarinet and clarinet were really similar in finger positions and more. I have shown success with being in both band and choir since I usually attend the days I’m supposed and if I’m unable to attend some days, I usually let the teachers know.

Some of the skills and techniques I would like to improve on would be being able to project my voice more in the choir and to be able to play the bass clarinet a bit louder since I have some trouble with that. I would try to achieve that by practicing more.

My plans with my music in the future are to continue being in choir, hopefully until I graduate. Although I don’t know what I want to become in the future, I may want to pursue something that is music related, which the music program in Centennial would be helpful since I would have experience being in choir and band.

Core competencies

I demonstrated the core competency “Communication” during the time the music students had to do a small ensemble. During that time, I demonstrated that I can work with others to achieve a goal as the group I was in was able to figure out what we were going to do, with the song, and we were able to finish on time. If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to communicate and discuss our different opinions. When the group was deciding what song we should prepare for the ensemble, we didn’t really have any songs prepared so we discussed and decided by a popularity vote, which I thought worked out pretty well since the group members were all happy with the song that was chosen.

English 9 Final Reflection

This visual representation reflects the Core Competency: Communication and how I grew in that competency in English 9. The words represent my thoughts. I chose to symbolize my thoughts as hands because I felt like it was the best image to represent the text on communicating and helping each other out.

An example when I grew in communication is when I was working on a twine choose your own adventure project with my partner.

Choose Your Own Adventure: The Abandoned house

My partner Laura and I created this choose your own adventure story for our English 9 class. The theme of this story is ” to escape the abandoned house by solving riddles correctly.”

Communication Reflection

My project is how you are supposed to escape by solving riddles correctly. I communicated with my partner in person and by texting each other on Instagram. We first thought of some ideas and brainstormed them into a word document. Then we started to form the story by adding it on Twine. After we added more details then the images. I think as group partners we did pretty good, we also communicated and finished the story during the break. The problem I faced was uploading our story since I had a lot of trouble trying to figure it out. I solved the problem by asking my partner to send me the project as a zip folder. I would say I am satisfied by the end result of this project. Maybe next time I/we could try adding better or more details throughout the story.
