Communication Competency
This year-end concert was the last concert for the grade 12s. During these times when we were still learning and practicing the music pieces in order to do our best with these songs, while I was working with my fellow vocal jazz ensemble member for our last performance, I contributed to our success by showing up to class everyday on time for our rehearsals, and also by attending flex when I needed help on a piece that I was struggling on. By doing so, I was able to be more confident in the songs I was singing as I could make sure that I was singing the correct notes with the correct rhythm. This contributed to our success of all the songs we sang in vocal jazz as everyone’s voice is important in this ensemble so when we learn and practice our own parts, we can ensure that we can be successful. Additionally, when facing communication challenges during our vocal jazz rehearsals, I learned further that listening to everyone is crucial for any types of ensembles. We are able to work more effectively together when we listen to each other and try to work things out together. By listening to each others opinions on how we should proceed if we are all not sure allowed us to save time. With this, I learned how important everyones voices are important in a group ensemble and how much it can help us work collectively. The feedback I received during rehearsals leading up to our performance influenced my growth by prompting me to ask for help when I need it. When I am given feedback on how what I should to do improve even by a little bit, the feedback given to me by others encouraged me to ask for help if I am struggling with anything. And by listening to the feedback I received, I was able to improve my skills to be a better vocal jazz student. And due to the supportive nature of this ensemble, I became more comfortable when seeking for help compared to previous years. I improved a lot and had a blast in vocal jazz due to the connections we made with each other.
