Residential School Survivor Reflection: Carrie Lous

I recently had the chance to hear the story of Carrie Louis, a survivor of a school where Indigenous children were not allowed to speak their language or practice their traditions. Her story showed me the difficult challenges that Indigenous children faced in those schools.

Carrie’s story was really touching because it made me realize how colonialism has affected Indigenous people and their communities. She shared the hard times and struggles she went through as a young child, like being taken away from her family and losing her connection to her culture and language.

But what amazed me the most was Carrie’s bravery and her willingness to tell her story. It was clear that she felt a responsibility to teach us about the harm caused by those schools and the ongoing trauma that affects Indigenous communities.

Carrie’s journey towards healing and strength was truly inspiring. Despite the trauma she experienced, she didn’t let it define her or hold her back. She pursued her education and career, and eventually became a respected leader and advocate for Indigenous rights.

Overall, listening to Carrie’s story was a really powerful experience for me. It reminded me of the importance of acknowledging the past and working towards a better future for everyone in Canada. Her story showed me how vital it is to educate ourselves, raise awareness, and support Indigenous people in their ongoing struggles for justice and healing.

Personal and Social Awareness: Core Competency

Carrie Louis’ story is a great example of the importance of developing personal and social awareness. Through her own journey, she showed a deep understanding of her emotions and the impact of the residential school system on her life. She also demonstrated an impressive level of social awareness by explaining how her experiences fit into the larger history of colonization and its effects on Indigenous communities. By sharing her story, Carrie helped increase awareness and understanding of the trauma and injustices faced by Indigenous people. This highlights the significance of cultivating personal and social awareness to build empathy, understanding, and support for those who have been marginalized and oppressed.

Transforming Parabolas

Parent Function: y=x^2

My Equation: y=1/2(x-7)^2-1

Significance of a, h and k:

“a” which is 1/2 in my equation is significant because it makes the parabola above stretch horizontally. Generally when “a” is positive like my “a” in my function above, the parabola opens upwards. Although if “a” was negative the parabola would open downwards. Another factor that would play a pivotal role to the shape of the parabola is the value when “a” > 1 and “a” <-1, the parabola compresses horizontally. On the other-hand, when “a” is 0<“a”<1 and -1<“a”<0 the parabola stretches horizontally.

“h” which is the horizontal shift of the x value of the vertex. So in my equation specifically inside the brackets is (x-7) which means the original x value was positive 7 in the x value of the vertex. Causing the parabola to horizontally shift 7 to the right. Essentially your “h” determines the value of x where your vertex opens up.

“k” which is -1 in my equation, is my constant and vertical displacement which shifts the parabola down 1. The value of “k” is the y-coordinate of the vertex of the parabola. In this equation, k=-1 which means the vertex of the parabola is at y=-1.

Overall, the equation y=1/2(x-7)^2-1 represents a parabola that opens upwards, has a vertex of (7, -1) which shifts the parabola 7 times to the right and down once while the parabola compresses horizontally.

Core Competency – Communication

1) Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in multiple ways?

An example would be when explaining the significance of “h” and “k”, they were both determined from the vertex. The idea that both played a crucial role to the displacement of the parabola in terms of where it’s located on the graph.

2) Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

The value “a” determines the shape of the parabola, while the coordinates of the vertex, “h” and “k”, determine its position.

3) Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

I used headings in bold, dark letters to organize sections to allow the readers to follow along clearer with titles to describe each section.

Facing a Challenge

Problem:

At first glance, this equation appeared to be very complex, and I was unsure of how to approach it. However, after reviewing the material and practicing more problems, I was able to overcome this challenge.

The first time I attempted this problem, I found it challenging because I did not have a clear understanding of how to solve radical equations. I was confused by the square roots on both sides of the equation and was unsure of how to isolate the variable. I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to proceed.

The mistake that I made the first time I attempted this problem was that I did not correctly apply the rules of algebra to isolate the variable. Specifically, I was unsure of how to eliminate the square roots on both sides of the equation. I mistakenly squared both sides of the equation to get rid of the square roots, but I did not realize that this would be an extraneous solution. This led to an incorrect answer and caused me to become more confused and frustrated. But through reviewing the material and practicing more problems, I was able to gain a better understanding of the concept and solved the question. I now feel more confident in my ability to solve radical equations.

Physical Geography Core Competency Self-Assessment

For physical geography, my group and I created a PowerPoint presentation about the impact of natural disasters in third-world countries. To gather information, we researched and scoured the internet for credible sources on the topic. We collaborated with our team members to organize and present the information in an easy-to-understand format, while also considering different perspectives and ideas. Effective communication was key throughout the process as we kept our team and experts informed of our progress and addressed any concerns or feedback they had. Our final presentation highlighted the importance of understanding the unique challenges and complexities of natural disasters in these countries, and we effectively communicated key points and takeaways to our audience.

For this project I was proficient in communicating but there’s some stuff I have to work on. To better communicate with my group is to actively listen to what others have to say. This means paying attention to what they are saying, asking questions to clarify any confusion, and showing that you understand their perspective. Another way is to be clear and concise when expressing your own ideas. Try to be respectful and considerate of others’ opinions, even if they differ from your own. Finally, try to be open to feedback and willing to make changes if necessary to improve group communication.

Computer Programming 11 Self-Assessment

This particular unit is about graphics and animation. I found this assignment the hardest because of the amount of times I’ve had to redo my code. Through perseverance and constant re-adjusting, I finally made the code work. I’ve learned new concepts such as function, recursion and many more which helped me through my learning process.

  • I make my ideas work or I change what I am doing
  • I have interests and passions I pursue over time
  • I understand how I will continue to develop new abilities and strengths to help me meet new challenges

CPR Reflection

My Product

CPR Reflection

Something I learned that I didn’t know before was that during cpr, you have to push 2 inches at the rate of 100-120 beats per second. The biggest takeaway from the CPR unit is that the techniques and procedures showcased in this unit is essential to learn. At anytime anyone around you can go through a heart attack or stroke so having this type of knowledge will help you perform procedures to potentially save someone’s life. This connects to the previous unit which talked about the importance of nutrition because they are both valuable in our health and wellness. As they both have to do with knowledge that can save your life and everyone around you whether it be having basic knowledge as exercising everyday to keep a healthy heart or performing special techniques that can secure a life in the future.

Core Competency Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements by checking on somebody to see if they are unconscious or not to then be able to give them the needed cpr.

I find it easy to be in a group because it allows me to listens to everyone’s thoughts and analyze the pros and cons of everyone’s perception on what to do and ultimately finding the best decision for myself and others.

I demonstrate respectful, inclusive behaviour by following the rules and allowing others to have fun by not ball-hogging which results in an inclusive and overall fun environment.

I give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals. An example of this is whenever I don’t understand an aspect on a particular unit, I ask and receive on feedback which allows me to progress in my work which ultimately creates an easier pathway for my goals. Also with doing this, and using the knowledge I have consumed, I’m able to make an environment of learning where I can help others achieve goals similar to mine.

My Core Competency Goal

I ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. I struggle with this the most because in class, I have a hard time gathering thoughts and most of the time I don’t know what to say. So I’d like to work on getting out of my comfort zone and to become an active and supporter listener.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility: How I manage school-related stress

This beautiful image relieves of my stress very much. It reminds me of the days I ate some good chicken at Jollibee.

  • When I make mistakes, I don’t beat myself up. Instead I move on and learn from it.
  • Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include playing basketball, sleeping well and spending time with my family.
  • When I am feeling anxious about a test, I can calm myself by listening to calm music
  • When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I go for a walk outside.
