In The Heat of the Night

There are examples of racism in Canada society. Colored people were treated differently for their skin color and have different rights compared for non-colored people. I believe it is a problem because their lives are affected every day and they cannot change how they look. Racism can cause stress to someone who had experienced racism and can be led to racial trauma. In addition, a lot of indigenous people were affected by racism. There were residential schools that were up to educate indigenous youth to fit into Canadian society. I believe it is a problem in society because it causes cultures to be forgotten and many indigenous youths forgot mostly everything before they went into the schools. They were harshly treated, and many could not make it to the end. My opinion of racism has been affected by reading and doing activities connected to In the Heat of the Night. I could read and see how colored individuals are treated in everyday life. I only heard that people that were colored had been mistreated but I have never seen or read how exactly they were treated. In the Heat of the Night had a lot of examples of racism and showed how a colored man was treated every day. The activities helped me get more engaged with the book and it made me think more about the racist comments. In the Heat of the Night had a lot of examples of attitudes toward racism and I could see how other people in the story feel about racism. This book also had examples of how people thought about racism in the 1960s and I could see how racism changed over the years. In conclusion, In the Heat of the Night had gotten me to think about racism more and it changed my opinion of racism.
