Facing a Challenge (Pre-Cal 11)

QUESTIONS:

The first time I tried this problem I found it challenging because it took a while to expand and square all the components. I doubted myself a few times cause of the high numbers but trusted the process and saw it through.

The mistake I made when I first did this problem was I did not fully factor the squared binomials, so I had to go back and redo them.

Some strategies I used to help me solve this problem: I looked at similar problems to see the steps involved to solve them and applied them to this problem.

Some concepts and skills I needed to remember in order to solve this problem were squaring binomials, adding, subtracting, and squaring both sides of the equals sign at the same time.

Next time I encounter a difficult problem, I might try to find the restrictions for x first, then put everything I can onto one side of the equals sign, and square all the terms to get rid of the radicals. Then I will double check my answers as I go to make sure they make sense.

Facing A Challenge

Workbook Questions: Chapter 1.7

Questions:

  • The first time I tried this problem I found it challenging because it took a long time to do the equation and all the extraneous solutions to get the right answer. I also did not isolate the variable on one side of the equals sign, then square everything the first time I did this.
  • The mistake I made when I first did this problem was I did not square the binomial correctly, I also forgot to square the product on both sides of the equals sign at the same time. I also did forgot to keep isolating the radical, which is important to get the correct answer.
  • Some strategies I used to help me solve this problem: I asked for help to point me in the right direction to figure out how to solve the problem. I also used the answer key and worked backwards to find the correct solution.
  • Some concepts and skills I needed to remember in order to solve this problem were squaring binomials, adding, subtracting, and squaring both sides of the equals sign at the same time.
  • Next time I encounter a difficult problem, I might try to read find the restrictions for x first, then put everything I can onto one side of the equals sign, and square all the terms to get rid of the radicals. Then I can start squaring, subtracting terms, and isolating the variable, and solving for x.

Musical Performance Reflection

Solo & Ensemble Performance

This is a video from the year end concert

Curricular Competencies Reflection

What are some instrumental or performance techniques and musical skills you have shown success with through this chosen experience? I showed

What are some skills and techniques you would like to improve on and how will you do that? I would like to improve my hand technique and work on using more wrist with my left hand. I will start with some slow rudiments and then work on some scores with more wrist control.

What are your plans for continuing with your music in the future? Right now, outside of school I am the drum sergeant of a really good grade 4 band and will keep playing in that band until I age out at 18. Then I will join a higher grade band and play in either grade 3, 2, or 1.

Core Competencies Reflections

Evidence that I can acquire information about complex and specialized topics from various sources, synthesize it, and present it with thoughtful analysis can be found in this video. I took different rudiments and notes from different grades and levels of playing, and augmented it with the original sheet music. I used my knowledge of notes and pieces to make the music sound a little more interesting on the drumming aspect of things.

When I need to boost my mood or re-focus, I won’t think about something off topic, or something that I played previously because it won’t help me and it may distract me from what I currently playing. I think about what part comes next and anticipate what I am going to play to make it work with the song.

I know that my playing can have both positive and negative consequences, including not making the band or the song we are playing sound as good as it can be, so I adjust my actions and playing to fir the song and not go over the top and I only play what the song needs.

Others find my feedback useful because I give them useful information like what they did well and what they need to improve on. I will tell them good things they did like how well they played and how they can improve.
