My Parabola

Explanation

My function in this graph is 𝑦=−4(𝑥+2)^2+3 and the parent function is y=x^2.

In the equation 𝑦=−4(𝑥+2)^2+3, “a” determines the vertical stretch or compression of the parabola compared to the parent function. The negative value of “a” reflects a reflection across the x-axis, causing the parabola to open downwards. The value of “h” shifts the parabola horizontally, causing it to move two units to the left. Lastly, “k” determines the vertical shift of the parabola, moving it three units up since “k” is positive 3. These transformations collectively alter the shape, orientation, and position of the parabola relative to its parent function.

Self Assessment

1.) In this assignment, I demonstrated the same mathematical concepts in multiple ways by giving the different values in the position where they are, and how they affect the overall parabola.

2.) I used mathematical vocabulary all throughout this assignment. A couple specific cases are: “Parent function,” “x-axis,” “units” and more.

3.) I used proper formatting throughout this assignment by giving my parabola and a direct comparison between my function and the parent function in a clear and easy to understand way. I also formatted properly by clearly splitting my self assessment and my explanation paragraphs.

Math 10 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

During my journey in Math 10, I have observed a significant improvement in my commitment to individual practice. Initially, I encountered considerable difficulties with the material and lacked the motivation to deepen my understanding. However, I have recently adopted a new approach to tackle challenges. Whenever I encounter obstacles, I diligently turn to the workbook, completing additional exercises until I achieve a proficient comprehension. This newfound dedication to individual practice has not only resulted in remarkable success in the course but has also significantly enhanced my understanding of mathematics.

Throughout the Math 10 curriculum, I have steadily developed my ability to strategically prepare for assessments. At the beginning of the year, I rarely invested time in studying before assessments, regardless of their significance. Unsurprisingly, this negligence resulted in dismal scores. However, I swiftly recognized the need for change. Lately, I have capitalized on the opportunities provided by flex and CENT Time, dedicating these periods to thorough exam preparation. Consequently, my understanding of the subject matter has deepened, and my overall performance in math has improved substantially.

During the current semester of Math 10, I faced numerous absences due to illness, particularly at the start of the term. These prolonged periods away from school, combined with my less-than-adequate work ethic, created a challenging situation that hindered the development of my mathematical skills. Realizing that rectifying this issue was within my control, I made a conscious effort to improve my work ethic. To overcome the setbacks caused by my absences, I diligently reviewed the missed material and actively sought opportunities to make up for any missed tests and assignments.

Advice for Future Students

I have a few valuable pieces of advice that I would like to share with future students taking this course. Firstly, it is crucial to dedicate sufficient time to thorough studying before assessments, even if you feel confident in your understanding of the material. Throughout the course, I made the mistake of underestimating the importance of this step, which ultimately hindered my progress. I strongly recommend prioritizing comprehensive studying before tests to ensure a solid grasp of the content.

Secondly, I encourage you not to hesitate in seeking help when needed. Whether it’s reaching out to your peers or approaching the teacher, don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. I personally experienced the immense benefits of asking questions whenever I faced challenges or confusion. Remember, seeking help is not a sign of weakness but rather a proactive approach to overcome obstacles and improve your understanding.

Lastly, take full advantage of the available resources such as workbooks and extra practice materials. If you find yourself struggling with specific concepts or topics, make use of the provided workbook and consider doing additional practice questions. Personally, I found that investing extra effort and practice when I encountered difficulties significantly aided my progress in the course.

Spanish 10 Creative Thinking Reflection

Comic Strip – Creative Thinking

I showed creative thinking during the creation of this comic strip by creating a beautiful and fully fleshed out story with compelling characters and a great environment for which these characters can and very successfully thrive within. The only limitation being my less than fluent level of Spanish, which these characters had to speak in. Creative thinking was at the forefront of my mind when creating this masterpiece of a story, I had to overcome the limitation of only 6 boxes of information allowed. Overall, I am quite proud of the outcome of this comic strip and it was a good learning experience for my Spanish speaking.

Comic Strip – I Can Statements

I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area of interest or passion.

I can develop a body of creative work over time in an area of interest or passion because I worked on this comic strip over multiple days and slowly increased the quality of the work, adding new things that enhanced the quality of the finished work.

I can get new ideas in areas in which I have an interest and build my skills to make them work.

I can get new ideas in areas in which I have an interest and build my skills to make them work because as I was working on my comic strip, I frequently checked my notes and the textbook to learn and add new vocabulary words to my comic strip to increase the quality of my finished work.

I can get new ideas or build on or combine other people’s ideas to create new things within the constraints of a form, a problem, or materials.

I can get new ideas or build on or combine other people’s ideas to create new things within the constraints of a form, a problem, or materials because I utilized the help of my friends when I needed assistance in vocabulary or grammar rules.

My Domain and Range.

x=(y+6)2-2

My Graphed Equation:

Domain: X -2

Range: All Real Numbers

This equation is not a function because it fails the vertical line test.

What is the vertical line test?

The vertical line test is a test used to check if an equation is a function or not. Certain equations pass or fail this test if the vertical line does not touch more than one point on the line. As you can see from my image below, I have provided a vertical line along with my original image to show that it fails the test. There is also a test called the “Horizontal Line Test,” but we do not need to do that since that test only shows the type of function it is, not if it is a function or not.

What does Domain and Range mean?

The X values of the relation form the domain, and the Y values form the range. I’ve included instances of both domain and range in the mapping diagram and table diagram below, with the domain values represented by the oval on the left and the range values represented by the oval on the right.

X246
Y123

What does my domain and range specifically mean?

My domain of X -2 and my range of All Real Numbers means that the X value of my equation must be anything equal to or above negative two, as stated by the “” sign. and my range being All Real Numbers means that the Y value of my equation must be any real number, this is because my equation is a sideways parabola. That means that the Y values in this one will go on slowly increasing infinitely.

Communication Core Competency

1. Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in multiple ways?

By explaining what domain and range are and how they might differ, as well as by providing two different examples—my equation and graph and a mapping diagram—I was able to convey the same mathematical concept in various ways.

2. Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

I utilised terms like Domain, Range, X, Y, Parabola, Relation, Values, Mapping Diagram, and a few others throughout the entire task. I utilised these to indicate that I understood the subject since they illustrate that I am aware of the connection between Domain and Range, as well as the X and Y values of an equation and relation.

3. Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

When I divided my talking points into clear, bold titles that made it clear what the key themes of each part were, I used formatting to display my material in a straightforward and organised way. Additionally, I employed formatting when my equation took up the entire space.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

I utilized creative thinking while doing this assignment because I had to think about multiple people who would match the given characteristics of the characters in my novel. I also utilized creative thinking while doing this assignment because I had to give reasons as to why I chose these actors to play the characters in my novel in a live action movie or show. Finally, I used creative thinking in this assignment by giving my own characteristics to characters based on my perception of them, and matching them to real life actors like the ones mentioned in the assignment. Overall, I showed creative writing in this assignment because I matched real life actors to my fictional characters from the novel, gave reasons as to why I chose these people, and gave the characters characteristics based on my perception of them.

Core Competency Self Assessment

What are some conflicts that you have seen happening in the classroom? How do you think kids could prevent them? Resolve them?

I’ve seen that students at the school have been chatting with pals during free periods, like our new Flex and Cent-Time blocks, rather than working. This occurs because some students still do not understand the concept of accountability in regards to their overall schoolwork and homework. The pupils must be made aware of the profound influence their performance in secondary school will have on their future if we are to find a solution to these problems. Understanding the significance of completing homework assignments and receiving passing marks would be one approach for us, the students, to address this problem.

I can initiate actions that bring me joy and satisfaction and recognize that I play a role in my well-being.

I can take the initiative to do things that make me happy and satisfied and realise that I have a hand in my wellbeing since I constantly look for activities that can improve my mental and physical well-being. Because I am aware of the things I appreciate and abhor, I may locate these outlets like extracurricular activities and other things that can better my well-being. I am able to see how my actions affect my wellbeing since I am always taking steps to reduce stress and other unpleasant feelings, which will improve everything else I do in life.

Core Competency Goals

When I need to work collaboratively with people I don’t know well, I will get to know the people I have chosen or been assigned to work with by sharing and receiving information about each other. I will also try to keep conversations going instead of just letting the conversation die and having us sit on our phones in a group.

Others find my feedback useful because when friends ask for feedback, I give my best answer to their questions, and they receive good marks for including my feedback in whatever their project was.

One strategy or activity that stimulates my imagination is when I am given assignments where I must be creative, such as, Creative Writing assignments or art projects. I am able to stimulate my imaginative thoughts by listening to music and receiving feedback from other peoples assignments/projects.

Core Competency Self-Assessment

Communication

I communicate clearly and purposefully, using a variety of forms appropriately.

I chose this artifact to demonstrate communication because I was able to create a good sentence out of this Image and I communicated with the people in this image to create a proper and good final product. A challenge or obstacle I had to overcome during communication was trying to speak to my partners when doing skits because some of the Spanish words were quite difficult to pronounce. I learned how to speak efficiently in Spanish and to speak very basic sentences such as “Where is the bathroom?” and “Where is this?.” I can apply this skill to my everyday life by practicing Spanish with my friends who are also taking Spanish at school.
