Social Justice Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical reflective thinking is about analyzing and interpreting information I already know and coming up with reasonable conclusion, judgment or plans. With this assignment I had to analyze and interpret two images in order to answer the following questions. The two images are about adopting Indigenous children, and by using my past knowledge I know that the two images are much more sinister than they look. I roughly know the time period when these two images are created and since I am learning about sixty scoop, I know that the images are racially motivated. Using these knowledge and I came to a conclusion that this was another attempt from Canadian government to wipe out Indigenous society. The sixty scoop was an event were thousands of Indigenous children are taken from their parents, and transfer them to white parents hoping that they would be white washed. Not only the two images are an advertisement for the sixty scoop, they are also propaganda. They portraited the Indigenous parents as incompetent people who are not responsible enough to take care of their child, and the Indigenous children are happy to be with white parents instead of their own. This is a brief summary of what I have written on the assignment, and I came to this conclusion by using critical reflective thinking.

English 11 Poetry Reflection

My poem

Curricular Competencies Reflection

The overall purpose of this poem was to show the menacing side of an onion and it’s inevitable demise. The only audience I had in mind was my teacher as I thought that I would be handing this poem to her only. Unfortunately this poem did not relate me at all. The onion presented within the poem was supposed to resemble a meaning creature that was a minute away from being exiled from existence. I am neither meaning nor will I be executed any time soon. I do not hold any grudges towards onion thus this poem was not personal, it was just an assignment that needed to be handed in. Though the poem did not resonate with me I did have a plan when I created the poem. I chosen 15 words that described the onion. Then I made fifteen sentences that each contained one of the 15 words that I used to described the onion. Then I added poetic devices to those fifteen sentences which added more lines and flavors to my poem. I used imagery as I illustrated how the onion looked like and described the feeble yet aggressive nature of the onion. I portrayed the onion as a vulnerable life form as it’s skin is so fragile and dry you could snap it without any efforts. Then I showed its aggressiveness as I described the onion’s scent and taste. I had fun when I wrote this poem and even though I do not relate to it, I did put in the time and effort.

Creative Thinking Core Competency Reflection

When I first created this poem it was originally about a miniature from Warhammer. The miniature was called Indomitus Primaris lieutenant. Unfortunately I was not able to think of enough words to describe the miniature, however, I found that the words I had chosen was enough to describe an onion. Thus an onion became the topic for my poem. I usually lean towards more dark gritty settings, and I was able to develop my own original idea as I exaggerated the cooking process of an onion. I spend a bit of time each day to use my imagination, and because I am used to pictured things in my head no strategies was required to stimulate my imagination. The dark tone set in the poem is the main innovation of the poem. It is where all the creativity was implemented and perhaps next time I could write a poem in a more positive light. I also need to improve on usage of auditory device as there were only two lines that used auditory device for the duration of the entire poem.

Communicating

Photo of Position vs Time Graph

This demonstrates the communication section of the core competencies because without team work it would be impossible to complete this lab. This lab required three people to walk/run while others timed them at specific positions. I was able to able to be a supportive listener when one of my group member told me my task. Additionally I was also able to help out one of my group member to fill out the timer’s name for table one. I did my share by slow walking 25 meters and by working with multiple people I was able to acquire enough information to finish this lab. Though I did my part I could have done a better job by being more active with the group.
