Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

This project has allowed for me to explore my skills and abilities. Through the process of completing this bag, I have had to modify or make things up to create my finished product. For example, the pattern for the squares did not include the orange border around the star and moon. The star was also not a part of the pattern set. The squares did not come with instructions regarding assembly, so I had to create that as well. Hand stitching the squares together and burying threads was also exceedingly difficult; not because it is hard, but because it took a long time to complete as it is tedious work. Creating the straps was also very difficult. Finding the right length, tension, and width took a very long time, as I had to redo them numerous times.  Though the hardest part by far, was creating the lining. There was no pattern or inspiration for it, I had to do it all myself. I traced the finished outside of the bag onto the fabric for the lining and hoped for the best. The fabric I chose was also difficult to work with. I needed to use a special needle, different tension, and battled the fabric’s aggressive fraying. I decided to create a zippered pocket and French seam around the bag to challenge myself as I had never done them before. Finishing the top edge was very hard as well. The fabric did not want to lay and ironing was not working very well. Hand stitching the lining to the bag wasn’t hard, but it was tedious and meticulous work as I wanted the edges to be as perfect as possible. This project required large amounts of critical thinking, as majority of the project was improvised. I am proud of the finished product and look forward to using it.

Textiles Arts and Crafts Core Competency Self-Assessment

Thinking

My crochet squares effectively display my critical thinking skills. They demonstrate this as I had to modify the patterns. Originally the pattern for the moon and star don’t have the darker oranger boarder. I had to use my critical thinking skills to figure out how to add it on. I added a row of slip stitches in orange around the outside of each shape. The outline, I believe adds cleanliness and more of a detailed and finished look to the project. When I have enough of these squares, I will assemble them into a bag and add straps, then a lining. I hope to continue refining my crochet skills and create more projects in the future.

Pre-Calculus Core Competemcy Self Assessment

Core Competency Reflection

During this semester I demonstrated numerous core competencies. One of those competencies was being able to learn and use math vocabulary. I was able to successfully demonstrate my learning using the proper mathematical terms. I was able to do this both on tests and while helping my peers. This skill helped me better understand concepts and allowed me to demonstrate my knowledge more effectively.

Another competency I was able to demonstrate was the ability to strategically prepare for assessments. By figuring out what study methods work best for me, I was able to achieve grades I am proud of. By reviewing the class notes and doing numerous practice questions, I was able to quickly learn and understand concepts. If i became stuck on a particular concept or question, I would pracrice more problems from that unit untill I hqd a complete understanding. All these methods allowed for me to achive a grade I am happy with.

A different competency I was able to demonstrate was the ability to work collaboratively with others. While doing board work and class. I was able to work well with those in my group and effectively collaberate with eachother to solve problems. This allowed for more success for me in the class as explaining concepts allowed for me to rethink solving stratagies, and having more people availible to ask for help.

Advice For Future Students

My advice for future students would be to study the notes and do more practice questions than you think you need to do. Another piece of advice would be to study more than one day before the test and ask questions when you have them.

English First Peoples 11 Reflection

My Artifact

I rate the authenticity at a 5. The author is telling a story from a community he is a part of. The author and Matoaka both originate from the Powhatan community. He factually states the historical happenings around the life of Matoaka. He tells of how she was portrayed in the Disney movie, and how different the actual events of the story are. The author tells of the harmful stereotypes used to portray his people and how different it was in actuality. For these reasons, I rate the authenticity of the text to be a 5.

The Real “Pocahontas” Story Text Evaluation

Curricular Competencies Reflection

Through this assignment, I was able to demonstrate the comprehend and connect competencies. By completing this assignment, I learned how to determine whether a text is authentic. By learning this skill, I can now establish whether a text is authentic and written by those who have jurisdiction to tell it. This is important when reading and discussing Indigenous topics as it is pertinent that they are genuine and written by individuals that have first-hand knowledge. It is an important part of reconciliation as hearing requirements and requests from those harmed allows for proper healing.

Core Competency Reflection

By completing this project, I was able to advance my thinking core competency. While reading a website, I can determine whether the text is authentic or not. I can do this by analyzing evidence to make judgements. To determine if it is authentic, first I find whose story is being told. Next, I read and see if the author has the jurisdiction to tell the story. Then, I check if the author is representing their own culture and representing it accurately. By considering all of these factors, I can determine whether the story is authentic and a credible source or not.

Chapter 1 Pre-Calculus 11

When I first attempted this problem, I encountered some difficulties solving it. I found it challenging due to all of the steps involved. The most difficult components of this problem were remembering to foil the brackets, and correctly moving all terms to one side to use the zero product property law. I was frequently making mistakes regarding these steps. To fully understand how to effectively solve this problem, I consulted multiple strategies. I reviewed the notes and asked my peers to help me understand. The most important concepts I needed to remember when completing this problem were to foil terms, use the zero product property and factoring terms. The next time I encounter a problem, I will ask my peers and consult other resources available to me, such as a video tutorial or a teacher.

Lab 20G; Titration of primary and secondary standard solutions

Communication Core Competency

This lab is a good representation of my ability to communicate with those surrounding me. I was able to work with others to achieve a goal. I also demonstrated my ability to take on roles and responsibilities in a group. My partner and I were able to successfully work together to achieve good products by communicating and sharing responsibility. We were able to properly titrate oxalic acid with sodium hydroxide. From this data we were able to find the amount of NaOH needed to neutralize the oxalic acid. From there we were able to create a standard solution.
