Personal/Social competency
When facing challenging jazz arrangements, I try to overcome the obstacle until I can sing the harmony/part of the arrangement. I listen to the tracks carefully and use a piano to hear the notes clearly whenever I am having a hard time listening to tracks for practices. The songs I am learning in vocal jazz are challenging but I will overcome the difficulty and prepare for upcoming the performance.
I prioritize what is best for the vocal jazz ensemble’s success and my improvisational aspirations, which is evident from my decisions such as performance communications and solos. I try to look at my vocal jazz mates to have fun with during the performance, letting them and myself know for dynamics, and show the fun to the audience. For solos, I do my best to practice my solos so I don’t make a mistake, remember my solo cues, and have the audience feel included.
During sectionals, I do my best to be the leading role of the group and help out with how to sing in certain bars in the arrangements. But while doing the leading I also have others help me out when I have a problem trying to understand the song. I also hype or reassure my peers whether they sang their harmonies well or not, no human being is perfect, including me.
