Most Successful Lab

We made a carrot muffin yesterday and it was successful. Our carrot muffin tasted sweet, soft, smelled like coconut, pineapple, carrot, buttery, and golden brown. I chose this as the most successful lab because the recipe was actually easy to follow and our muffin turned out good. Additionally, I think our muffin met the product standards because it was soft, moist, flavorful, similar in size and shape. The most challenging part was when we grate our carrots, but we did our best and we used our skills to overcome it. My greatest success in this dish was the final product because it tasted so good and I’m very proud of it. After making the muffin, I think I obtained and developed my baking skills.

Most Challenging Lab

I made this quinoa bowl salad and it was the most challenging lab for me. My quinoa salad looked colorful, crunchy because of the vegetables and you can hear its crunchiness while chewing it , additionally, soft when you touch the egg and avocado. I chose this lab as the most challenging because you need to choose variety of vegetables and fruits to create a colorful dish. Moreover, it was hard to think about the platting and it was difficult to cut all ingredients. I think I met the product standards because my quinoa salad was colorful, flavorful, looks appealing in the eyes, and healthy. The challenges I encountered while making the salad were the part of cutting the vegetables, fruits and how am I going to put all the ingredients in the bowl to make it look nice. But, I overcome the challenges with my knife skills and creativeness for the platting. The successful part of this dish was the final product because I think it appeared presentable and edible. Lastly, despite of the challenges, I’m proud of the outcome of my quinoa salad bowl.

Favorite Lab

We made a home made cast iron skillet pizza. And, our pizza is golden brown in color, crispy when you eat, smells cheesy, and rough in texture. This is my favorite lab because I had fun and it was my first time making a pizza. Moreover, we encountered some challenges on making it. It was hard to knead the dough and make it into a perfect circle. But, we overcome it by accepting the fact that it won’t go exactly as plan and just put a lot of toppings on the top to make it more appealing in the eyes. The greatest success in this dish was the final product even though the shape was not perfect, yet it tasted so good. Making a home made pizza for the first time was my proudest experience because we made a flavorful and cheesy pizza like the one we buy from pizza’s store.

Cooking At Home: Breakfast Home Lab

I made an Egg, Ham, and Cheese Sandwich for my breakfast home lab. And, this sandwich smells buttery because I toasted the bread with butter. It has a rough texture that made it crispy when you eat the sandwich and it has a golden brown color. I chose this breakfast because it’s easy to make and you can add more ingredients to it without cooking it. I also had to overcome some challenges while making it and that was the time when I placed all the ingredients in the bread and make it appealing in the eyes. But, I did my best to make it edible by making a plan how am I going to put the ingredients all together. The greatest success in this dish was the final product because it tasted so good. Moreover, I’m proud about this experience because I made a flavorful and healthy sandwich. Lastly, my mother said that it was delicious and I did excellent.

Communication

Two weeks ago, we cooked a delicious scone with blueberry filling on it. Our teacher demonstrated to us how to cook, measure, and mix all the ingredients before we make it with our partner. It was surprisingly easy to make because you only need to combine all the liquid and dry ingredients. Moreover, it won’t take so much time if you and your partner/group members have good communication when working in the kitchen. It is important to have communication during the lab because it is a way to create connections, deliver ideas, and understand information quickly. When people know what they are doing, it a sign of having good communication with their peers. But, there might be some problems if group members are not communicating. They might not understand each other, and there might be confusion. To solve those problems, you and your partner/group members should talk and create a plan on how to make things work in the kitchen.

Knife Skills

On October 5, 2020, we cooked a healthy and delicious breakfast hash. But first, our teacher demonstrated the process of how to prepare the ingredients and how to cook it. We watched and listened to her carefully because the way of cooking breakfast hash was difficult when it was your first time making it. Moreover, when our teacher has done explaining everything to us, it’s our turn to prepare and cook. We successfully cut all the vegetables needed in the breakfast hash because our teacher showed us how to slice all the ingredients. And, here are some different kinds of knife cut: mince, dice, batonnet, also julienne. The variety of knife cuts makes our food look prettier, and it keeps the size consistent. We minced and diced all the vegetables we utilized, hence, everything cooked evenly. We did it without getting hurt because she taught us how to handle a knife properly. However, we also faced challenges when it comes to sauteing the vegetables because we over mixed, and it looked a little bit soggy. Yet, our breakfast hash tasted good.

My Most Memorable Food Experience

My most memorable food experience was when we had dinner in a Korean restaurant. It happened last year, and it was raining that day, so we decided to eat some spicy food to keep us warm. The restaurant was small but cozy inside, and it has wooden chairs and tables. I’m with my closest friends, and it was our first time eating in a restaurant because mostly we’re just ordering food and eat at my friend’s house near the school. We enjoyed the food because, at that moment, we’re craving soup, chicken, and spicy food. Moreover, we had a lot of fun chatting some random stuff while eating and laughing. This meal stands out for me because I’m with my friends, and the food was delicious.

Reflection

How has our interactions with trench warfare (letters from the trenches & “over the top” simulation) impacted our understanding of Remembrance Day and the contributions that Canadian soldiers made during WWI?

Our interaction with trench warfare made me understand and realize how life can get hard in the war. It is a matter between life and death because there’s no guarantee that a soldier would survive in a week or so. Soldiers during World War I bravely sacrificed their lives to fight for our freedom and peace even though at first, they thought the war was an adventure and opportunity. They fought until their last breath. And, they gave up their lives for our own sake. Because of their bravery and sacrifices as a soldier, we celebrate Remembrance Day to honor, to pay respect and to thank them for defending our country against the enemy.
