Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Personal Awareness
The fetal pig dissection was a highly-anticipated lab, and it lived up to its expectations. I dissected the pig with Marco Kee. We set up the fetal pig together and each took turns cutting open the pig. We studied for the digestive system quiz by identifying each digestive system part, from mouth to anus. If one of us couldn’t identify a part, we would collaborate together to find it on the fetal pig.
If we had great difficulty finding a body part, we used diagrams from google in addition to the ones given to us. Each diagram had different characteristics, including different points of view and body parts, so we used those to help us in studying. We were also asked about the gender of our fetal pig. To determine this, we analyzed some of the pig’s external features, like the location of the urogenital opening and the presence of the genital papilla or testes.
After completing this lab, I was better able to understand how my own digestive system works. It is amazing to know that this is just one of the many major systems in the body. I can appreciate how my body works even more now.
