Music Monday “LAND” Map Assignment: Self-Assessment

Curricular Response

I chose the quote “A reservation’s the apology/ Anthropology shows the truth,” because it reiterates the fact that the Indigenous people occupied this land before settlers stepped foot on it. Indigenous people had almost everything taken away from them, and the only things they received in return were reservations, which is incomparable to the things they lost. I picked this picture because it represents the stages of colonization, from when settlers arrived in North America, to now. At first, the relationship between the parties was great because they benefitted from each other, however, settlers began to have different intentions. They stole their land and attempted to convert their children to the settlers’ culture. To compensate for all the damage done, the governments gave the Indigenous people areas of land to live on, while the governments kept the rest.

Core Competency – Self-Assessment:

Since this assignment was unlike other typical English assignments, I encountered unique challenges. After analyzing the songs “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie and “My Land” by Litefoot, I had to compare and contrast their ideas and the message they were conveying. I then chose the most impactful quotes from both of the songs to support my takeaways from them. Finally, I drew some pictures, both literal and figurative, portraying the effects of colonialism and the actions of settlers. This assignment challenged my creativity, especially when I had to draw two figurative pictures.
