Drawing and Painting Core Competency Reflection

The piece above is the drawing I did for the portrait transformation project. I looked on Pinterest to find some inspiration for what I wanted to do. I used this inspiration to come up with my own idea. In the past, I have struggled with my pencil drawings becoming too smudged and messy because of the way that I blend. So, I wanted to try stippling which I haven’t done before. I made this plan because I wanted my piece to look cleaner and have each mark be more purposeful than my pieces had been in the past. I used the gridding technique we learned in class to draw the beetle onto the paper as accurately as I could. This helped me with placing the shadows and highlights correctly. One thing I would have improved on is the use of space. I found that there was too negative space on the paper, especially at the top. Next time I can plan my drawing out to that everything in the composition is more balanced.

“I can get new ideas or reinterpret others’ ideas in novel ways.” – creative thinking

“I can gather and combine new evidence with what I already know to develop reasoned conclusions,
judgments, or plans.” – critical thinking

Core Competency – Diffusion Lab

#communicationcc –

For this lab, we worked in pairs in order to test the diffusion of starch, water, iodine, and glucose through a dialysis tube. Collaboration was very important for the success of this lab. This is because there were parts in the procedure that required two people to complete, such as tying the dialysis tube, and the two partner groups needed to collaborate and share their data. This was very helpful because we could talk about each question together to further understand the lab, and we could help each other when we got stuck. The collaboration and teamwork between the pairs helped to complete and understand the lab.

In the process of this lab, critical thinking was very important. For this lab it was necessary to analyze the evidence presented during the experiment to draw conclusions and understand what was happening in the lab. To do this we analyzed the difference between the start of the experiment and the end of the experiment. We specifically looked at the changes in mass, volume, and colour of the solute and solutions between the tube and the beaker. I used feedback to improve during this lab on my hypothesis. This helped me to correct my mistakes and improve for next time.

Critical and Creative Thinking — Reflecting and Assessing

I can reflect on my thinking. I put loads of time and effort into this piece when planning and painting. I was able to reflect on the thinking that was put into my piece in my ‘Final Exam Piece Reflection’. I reflected on and talked about the planning process, painting, my struggles, and what I learned from this project. In the planning process, I made many changes to my initial design and in my reflection I talked about why I changed it and articulated my thoughts clearly. Additionally, since this was my first acrylic painting, I had many struggles. I reflected on how I felt and how I learned and overcame these struggles to create my final piece. In my final reflection for my final piece, I used the core competency “I can” statement, “I can reflect on my thinking” because I reflected on all parts of my final piece and made my thoughts clear.

Creative Thinking Skills

My Artifact: Album Cover “Our Love”

I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but I use that to develop my ideas.

I can form new ideas to create new things and I can also build on the ideas of others.

This piece connects to the core competency “Creative Thinking” because through this piece, I spent a lot of time working on my design and problem-solved. I also used my skills and built on what I learned in class to draw and colour this piece. In the future, I will continue to build on my skills and I would love to work on developing my art skills such as drawing, colour application, and design. To do this, I will work on forming new ideas to create new things.
