I can be kind to others, and support others when they need it. I can appreciate diverse perspectives on issues and can resolve problems respectfully and effectively.
Throughout this volcano project, I demonstrated social awareness and responsibility core competency by building and maintaining positive relationship with my partner. We worked collaboratively to communicate our information clearly and effectively. We divided and tasks and responsibilities equally for productivity. We indicated sophisticated understanding via test, images, and voiceover and tried to build environmental awareness during the presentation as well. We considered significant implications for people and the environment in the surrounding areas of the mountain we explored. The connection between earths plates and volcanic activity (the purpose of the project) is also clearly depicted in our presentation, which is the outcome of effective collaboration. We solved problems together whenever we faced challenges or obstacles while preparing for the presentation. We used the feedback from the teacher to improve and better understand our strengths and weaknesses.
I demonstrated and analyzed geographic significance in depth through the specific characteristics and significant implications of the volcano we explored (Mount Stromboli). My partner and I created a strong connection between earths plates and volcanic activity accordingly. My strength would be effective communication skill, which allows me to approach teamwork with positive attitude. However, I would like to improve on showing more patterns and trends by thoroughly analyzing causes and effects.
Throughout the fall concert, I have shown my dynamic techniques through the relative softness and loudness of the flute sound. Since dynamics created different intensities throughout the song, it allowed me to convey the mood. I would like to improve on precise breath control by practicing inhalation and exhalation to enhance my tone quality. My plan is to continue engaging in senior concert band during the third and fourth years of high school. I would like to continue playing flute after graduating high school as well.
Core Competencies Reflection
I can ask and respond to questions to be an active, supportive listener. I can work with others to achieve a goal.
I was capable of valuing diverse perspectives as a supportive listener, which indicates my growth in communication core competency. I collaborated with other students in band by sharing responsibility and setting achievable goals. We gave feedback to each other to work as a group, which led to the ability to generate and construct new ideas I wouldn’t have been able to come up with on my own. We also solved problems together whenever we faced any challenges or obstacles while preparing for the fall concert.
I can persevere with challenging tasks and take ownership of my goals, learning and behavior.
I supported my wellbeing by setting achievable goals to improve my overall flute skills. I recorded my flute sound during the practice to monitor and progress in my goals, which allowed me to listen to the piece through the third person point of view. I also attended the class on time (no absence) and regularly brought my instrument. This implies my growth in personal awareness/responsibility core competency.
I demonstrated the aspect of create and communicate competency. Throughout this assignment, I learned how to analyze characteristics such as speech, thoughts, and actions. These literary elements of characterization ultimately enhance and shape meaning and impact. My character infographic indicates my growth in writing and representations skills. I was capable of showing my critical and insightful understandings of the character and the text in a create way, which indicates a deep analysis in my writing. The story “Mountain Legend” allowed me to learn a strong connection between Indigenous peoples and the ancestors. The stories and oral traditions play a crucial role in depicting the close relationship with nature in terms of preserving Indigenous cultures.
Core Competencies Reflection
I can analyze evidence to make judgements. I can develop a body of creative work over time.
I grew in thinking core competency during this character infographic assignment. I was able to show my creative thinking by effectively using the chart provided to generate new ideas before making the final draft of my infographic. I mostly used the red colour because I believed that red symbolizes bravery, which clearly depicts the characteristics of the protagonist. I used my peers’ feedback to improve and make decisions when I faced any challenges and obstacles. I demonstrated my critical thinking skills by making a strong connection between the Indigenous peoples and their ancestors. The story of Muskawashee (the ancestor) was being told, and shed light on the protagonist’s perspectives, values, and beliefs. Ideas taught through storytelling become part of someone’s values and beliefs and have lasting effects just like the protagonist in the story was compelled to climb the treacherous mountain to dignify his heritage.
My blood type is A, and studies show that people with A blood type are patient, cautious, and earnest. They do not like to get into a fight, but sometimes they become overly sensitive. My MBTI is ESFJ, which means that I gain energy from interacting with other people. Some parts are accurate because I usually gain more energy from interacting with other people than from staying at home and having time for myself. I used to strongly believe them because blood types and personality tests were hugely popular among Koreans. I believe that some hiring managers ask about MBTI during job interviews in Korea because they want to get a better sense of an interviewee’s personality. In my opinion, an interviewer should not consider MBTI during the hiring process because some people would judge or even discriminate against interviewers based on their personalities just by looking at the MBTI letters. Horoscopes, blood types, and personality tests are not good predictors of career outcomes or romantic relationships and should be viewed just for enjoyment purposes. I have been judged by my blood type and personality test. However, since they generally highlight the positive parts or strengths of an individual’s personality, I usually don’t hesitate to tell others about my horoscope, blood type, or personality test. These fortunes are still popular today because sometimes positive fortunes allow people to cope with uncertainty or difficult situations. I tried to overcome and not believe superstitions because I realized that too much dependence on superstitions leads to anxiety. Despite the fact that I don’t believe fortunes nor superstitions, I enjoy viewing them as more of a fun myth than a scientific fact.
I know the group is working well together when I see the group truly valuing each contribution and idea by actively listening to one another. Active listening plays a crucial role in terms of having successful group work, which includes maintaining eye contact with a speaker, using brief verbal affirmations, and asking open-ended questions. These techniques allow the group to effectively work together and stay engaged with a topic. Throughout this semester, I am willing to work collaboratively with others by showing that I truly value every contribution and idea through active listening, which would allow me to build strong relationships. In addition, I will evenly divide tasks among group members to increase productivity.
Some of the things I do to stay mentally and physically healthy include exercising regularly, socializing, and drinking sufficient water. Physical activities such as walking and running reduce the risk of chronic health problems and relieve overall stress. During the workout, I often realize that it ultimately increases my energy levels, boosts my mood and positively affects my psychological health. Socializing and staying connected with others also allow me to stay mentally healthy because strong relationships increase my sense of happiness. My communication skills could be improved through social interaction as well. I also drink sufficient water to stay physically healthy because it regulates my body temperature and positively affects overall digestion. I will continue to exercise regularly, socialize, and drink sufficient water throughout this first semester.
Some short/long term goals for myself include learning how to make effective decisions, building my leadership skills, and taking care of my health. Making effective decisions improves productivity, which indicates strong time management skills. My plan to achieve this long-term goal is to contribute to various activities and find opportunities in order to gain new experiences. I will also seek help from the people around me to improve my decision-making skills. Another goal is to build my leadership skills such as communication and organization skills. Since these skills play a vital role in life, I would like to achieve this goal by joining leadership and encouraging personal growth. Taking care of my health is another long-term goal. Once again, I will exercise regularly, socializing, and drinking sufficient water in order to stay healthy both physically and psychologically.
A pro of group work is that individuals could collaborate by sharing responsibility and learning how to overcome conflicts Students could also develop a new perspective, which leads to stronger communication and teamwork skills. By working as a group, individuals could enhance their overall learning and productivity accordingly.
Cons for Group Work
A con of group work is that it easily causes conflicts between team members. When dividing tasks and sharing responsibility, I realized that there is unequal participation from students. Unequal participation could be extremely time-consuming, which could eventually lead to the lack of engagement during group work. Another con is distraction. Individuals could easily get distracted by environment around them, which leads to lack of concentration and decreased productivity.
If there is disagreement within the group, I find it helpful to identify points of agreement and disagreement after listening carefully in order to create a plan to solve each conflict. Since outcomes of well-managed conflict could lead to improved productivity and creativity due to increased participation, I would focus on the positive side of disagreement while compromising a dissent. I know the group is working well together when I notice an individual’s participation and communication within the group because effective communication allow us to increase engagement and handle conflict productively. If the group is not productive,we can divide the tasks in order to get things moving in the right direction. Separating work between team members would increase the overall productivity within the group. If I notice workload within the group that’s a sign that my ground needs help and we can get support by asking for help to teachers or classmates other than my group members.
What did you learn about working in a group from this semester that you will carry into your next group experience?
Throughout this semester, I learned that working in a group allows me to increase productivity and engagement. I was also able to improve my overall communication and problem-solving skills. If there is disagreement within the group, I learned how to deal and handle with the conflict effectively. Additionally, we got to share diverse perspectives within the group and hold one another accountable. Sharing diverse perspectives lead to increased creativity and a higher level of outcomes accordingly.
Throughout this unit, I learned about what are the risk factors of heart attack and a stroke, how to recognize the serious developing emergency, how to react, and how to resuscitate using the CPR and AED methods. Due to the denial and fear, I didn’t consider the risk factors of heart attack and a stroke before, but I realized that cardiac arrest could happen to the individuals around me and myself. I also learned that it is crucial to react immediately as I observe a person suffering from chest pain, stroke, or choking because serious damage may occur, and the heart muscle begins to die after 4-6 minutes of not getting oxygen. A key takeaway from the theory CPR unit is that chest compressions in CPR force blood to flow through the brain and other crucial organs until normal heart rhythm is restored. Accordingly, no cardiac arrest patient lives if you don’t start it. Despite the denial and fear, it is significant to step up for a better chance of recovery. This may lead to making a difference between life and death for someone as well. The CPR unit connects to the nutrition unit because both units are related to overall health. Unhealthy choices may cause various health issues. For instance, high cholesterol and lack of exercise could develop a heart attack or stroke due to the difficulty of enough blood flowing through arteries. Healthy choice plays a crucial role in preventing a heart attack and stroke as a result.
Core Competency Reflection
“I can work with others to achieve a goal.”
-> I chose this one because I demonstrated this competency by working with my partner during the practical CPR unit. Working with others allowed me to learn how to perform CPR effectively because we supported each other when we practiced chest compressions and the recovery position on a dummy doll.
“I can identify how my actions affect the community or environment and I can make positive change.”
-> I chose this one because I learned that it is crucial to step up when I observe the cardiac arrest patient because my actions could positively affect and make a difference between life and death for them. I demonstrated this competency through the theory and practical CPR test by clearly showing my understanding and knowledge.
“I can reflect on my thinking.”
-> I chose this one because I got to reflect on my thinking during the CPR unit. Once again, I didn’t consider the risk factors of heart attack and a stroke before due to the denial and fear, but I reflected on my thinking by building my understanding and awareness throughout this unit.
“I can give, receive, and act on feedback to progress in my goals.”
-> I chose this one because I gave, received, and acted on feedback to progress in my goals during the practical CPR unit. For instance, when I performed chest compressions on a dummy doll, my partner gave me feedback about keeping my arms straight. After receiving the feedback, I practiced keeping my arms straight with my elbow locked in position in order to compress straight down on the breastbone. I also demonstrated this competency by giving feedback to my peers while practicing.
One goal I have for myself going forward is to tell the difference between facts and opinions. I intend on working toward distinguishing between facts and opinions during any emergencies. Because it is significant to follow each step during CPR, I would practice distinguishing between facts and my own opinions. Unlike opinions, facts could provide crucial support for my actions during CPR. For instance, if I only rely on my opinions, I could miss some steps and just start giving chest compressions as I observe someone lying on the ground. On the contrary, if I use facts that I learned from this unit, I would check for hazards and assess responsiveness first before giving chest compressions.
(Core Competency that I intend on working towards: “I can tell the difference between facts and opinions.”)
In my infographic, I included the definition, significance, and danger of digital footprint. I used the footprint graphics and simple colours in order to elevate interest and engagement through the meaningful and clear visual infographic. Additionally, I used a program called Piktochart because it allows users to create infographics easily with high quality. Unique templates and designs also make the infographic more appealing and captivating.
Personal/Social Competency Reflection
I know that my digital footprint can have both positive and negative consequences including social standing and future opportunities, so I adjust my actions to create a kind environment on the internet. The fact that many people are currently aware of online reputation leads to digital footprint and online interactions becoming integral components nowadays. Because the level of an individual’s social value is depending on online interactions, online activities may lead to high social status. On the other hand, negative impacts occur such as cancel culture which is an act of public ostracism. The act excludes people on social media and ostracizes them from society. An individual’s reputation and livelihood can be endangered by a digital footprint. Furthermore, Digital Footprint impacts future opportunities such as interviews and applications. Studies show that 93% of employers search names before making a final decision which indicates that employers are not likely to hire people who have a negative digital footprint. The significance of digital footprint not only affects social standing but future opportunities as well. Therefore, I always endeavor to create a kind online environment and emphasize my strengths on the internet since social media has become an essential part of my life.
One of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced online presence includes managing personal accounts on the internet. Using strong passwords and privacy settings is one of the significant strategies to manage accounts. Studies show that “Passwords provide the first line of defense against unauthorized access to your computer and personal information” by protecting computers from hacking. However, sharing sensitive personal data such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, and passwords not only causes hacking, but the sharing may cause identity theft, stalking, or location threats as well. Another way of managing accounts is thinking twice before posting anything through social media. People should think about the reader, remember the golden rule, and ask themselves would they say the contents in real-life interactions. Also, thinking before posting will help individuals to consider whether the post is unnecessary, hurtful, or illegal. Since social media plays a crucial role in life, managing personal accounts is one of my preferred strategies for maintaining a healthy, balanced online presence.
One of the ways I work to build and maintain online relationships is to keep contacting companions and acquaintances via social media. Social networks such as Instagram and Facebook help individuals to maintain relationships with people they haven’t seen for years. Messaging, tagging, and leaving comments are also some ways to build and maintain online relationships but make sure to ask for permission before tagging anyone. The internet also helps people to make new interconnections with others. For instance, casting directors use social media to find actors or entertainers. Furthermore, building and maintaining online relationships benefit psychological health, especially during this period of the Covid-19 scare. People may be overwhelmed by the feeling of isolation, but keeping in touch with friends through social media reduces loneliness.
a. Was I able to identify how the geography impact the town / city with ease? How was I able to find how the physical geography impacted these areas?
-> Yes, I was able to identify the impact of geography by researching and using notes from the class.
b. How did the technology personally affect my learning? What were the pros and cons of using maphub.com? Be detailed in your response here.
-> In the beginning, I struggled with some technology difficulties such as putting images on the map, but I believe that using maphub.com was a good learning experience because creating an interactive map through technology was something that I had never done before. Also, the technology helps me to show my learning of geography in a creative way and find solutions to technological problems.
c. Were you satisfied with the result of your design and solutions?
-> Yes, I was satisfied with the result.
d. How would you refine your assignment in the future?
-> I would refine my assignment in the future by taking more time on researching in order to put more details and write more developments that could exist in Whistler.
