What’s The Word Around Town

WHISTLER B.C Jaden

Whistler is a city in the province of BC and country Canada.

PHYSICAL LANDFORMS

Mountains were created with andesite and dacite lava flows over hundred million years ago

Two economic activities based on the mountains are skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summertime. In 2010 Whistler hosted all the skiing events for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Mountain Biking is becoming a very popular sport and major racing events are held in Whistler during the summertime. Both events promote the city and its venues more which will increases tourism.

Whistler has a lot of lakes which have been formed by unique geographical forces and glacier activity over hundreds of years. Boating is a very popular recreational activity that people enjoy on these lakes. A lot of boat companies provide rentals for people that want to enjoy the activity. Another popular activity is fishing. There is a lot of rentals for fishing equipment as well.

CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS

Whistler’s climate is characterized as humid continental climate. What this means is that it has cold wet winters and warm summers which are dry. It is cold in the winter because of the higher elevation in the mountain area and is wet because its closer to the Pacific Ocean. The summers are warm because being close to the ocean. In the summer there are on average 11 days that have temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. In the wintertime there are on average 24 days that have temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Because of the higher elevation on the mountains, snow arrives as early as October.

Whistler benefits from snow because it attracts skiers and snowboarders. In the wintertime this is the main tourist attraction. In the summertime Whistler benefits from hiking and biking. After people are done their hiking and biking activities, they can go to local restaurants nearby and enjoy meals which helps the restaurant industry.

VEGETATION CHARACTERISTICS

Whistler has a lot of vegetation and there is a lot of greenery. Whistler alluvial forest soils are rich in black organic material. The soil is high in nutrients and can support various plants and trees. Whistler’s forest has a lot of cedar, pine, Douglas fur, and hemlock. Other types of vegetation include wildflowers, lichen, and mosses.

Lumber is a big industry that benefits from the forest. Some things that we need lumber for are building houses, paper, furniture, and campfires. Some activities to do in the forests include ziplining, hiking, camping, and climbing trees. People can also enjoy taking pictures in the forest for memories.

As many know, Whistler is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I chose Whistler because I’ve been to the city multiple times and have experienced lots of the venues and local attractions. We keep going to Whistler because my family enjoys it and there is always something new to enjoy.

FUTURE OF WHISTLER

Whistler could look very different 25 years down the road

In 25 years the overall world population is supposed to increase. Whistler will need to upgrade with more hotels to accommodate more people. Currently where the forests are being chopped down for lumber, this would create land for future hotel development. The lumber supply wouldn’t be a issue since forest lumber can be used for the buildings. Another upgrade would be new gondolas will be required to cut down on wait times and to explore new areas. This can possibly be done with 8 person gondolas which can possibly increase capacity by 35%, since more people are expected to visit Whistler.

The average temperature for Whistler is supposed to be warmer by 3 degrees celsius by 2050, this means less snow and more water on the ground. How can Whistler benefit from this? Developing a water park would be a great idea. An indoor waterpark would provide year round activities such as waterslides, deep water surfaces, cliff jumping, and bowling activities. Currently Whistler doesn’t have a waterpark, but it could benefit from it in the future with more water available from snow melting.

Another project in the future could be the development of ski slopes and areas at higher elevations. This would be due to the fact that temperatures would be warmer in the future and snow would melt where the current slopes are. A company should look at other mountains around the area for development of new ski areas where snow won’t be a issue year round.

REVIEW OF TECHNOLOGY AND POST

Some of the technological devices I used included a Macbook and a iPhone. I used these because they are user friendly and are very easy to use and find information with its tools and apps. Other people may use Samsung or Google Pixel phones as well as other computers such as Windows pc’s and chromebooks.

Maphub was required to be used in this assignment since it can be embedded into posts and other sites and is free. I liked using Maphub because it provided lots of customization for my map of Whistler and was very easy to understand. Some of the markers I placed on this map include the mountains, the lakes, the forests, and the town. All of these locations are important because they are major part of how the community benefits from them. I am happy with how this post turned out because of the research resources and technology resources I used.
