Physical Geography Core Competency Self-assessment

Collaborating

I can work with others to achieve my goal. I’ve shown that I can successfully do this competencies multiple times, in our most recent MOVE4MANA project and in other projects beforehand. I have developed my skills to collaborate by contacting group members out of school time to discuss our project and ensure we can successfully do the project to the best of our abilities. This project shows my abilities to collaborate as my group and I successfully finished the project on time.

I didn’t look at political impacts of the natural disasters, I also did not look at the social impacts as I felt it was not necessary for our presentation, regardless of these impacts we should still help. I looked at the economic impacts as we were able to tell Sierra Leone may not be able to afford the natural and afford to build and mitigate. Environmental impacts were considered as the natural disasters will have impacts on there farms and such. We didn’t feel the need to look at the impacts of countries around, although looking back at it, it might matter because if we help Sierra Leone other countries around might look at us for help. The extent of Canadians help should be to the point where they are not as dependent on us to be there whenever a disaster may occur.

Physical Geography Core Competency Reflection

I am choosing to focus on the collaborating core competency. The project I have chosen to write my reflection is my partner volcano project. I showed my abilities to find evidence by finding valid sources for information on my topic, I found a website that is dedicated to volcanoes and it has information on eruption history, facts about the volcano etc. Most of what you would need to know is on that website. This helped me with my project as it had lots of information which I used in my project. I was able to tell this was a valid website to use for information by looking at it and I found a section of it that has all of its sources for it’s information. I showed my abilities in collaborating by talking through things with my partner in terms of what questions we would each be doing. Another thing I did to show my abilities was communicating with my partner when I found something that had confused me in his part of the project and reading through each other’s parts to get a second perspective on it, to help find any mistake that’s may have been made. An area that I would need to grow in is the collaborating out of class, while it was not necessary for this project, there might be a project in the future which I might need to and I should work on developing my abilities in that area early on before it is needed.
