Where I’m From Essay

My Paper

The Writing Process

The easy part of the essay for me was the interview as my mom lives with me so I did not have trouble getting in contact with her. What was difficult was using this information to create it into sections for my essay. Trying to think about what I should lead off with, what should I use for my conclusion and everything in the middle. I also had to think about what would be interesting to portray in my essay and what would be appealing to my readers. When I was interviewing my mom some of her stories surprised me because they were never mentioned before and gave me a different view of her. Something I took away from doing this project was being able to gather information from someone and using it to create a story. I found it to be an excellent way of showing my work and found it generally fun.

Core Competency Reflection

My strategies for collecting relevant information for specific tasks include using the information I gather from my interview to make an essay. Turning specific stories into introductions and conclusions and making a story out of it.

I have valuable ideas to share about my mom and do so by creating a story about where she came from and how she made me who I am today. Representing every aspect of her to be able to create an essay that shows her qualities and what makes her my mom.

An example of something I have spent a lot of time learning about is my mom. This essay shows the time and effort I put in to create a story about her life. How the decisions she made came to make me who I am today.

An example of where I built upon someone else’s ideas is when I used the information I gathered from the interview and used it to create a story. Being able to represent my ideas in a professional matter that also makes it more interesting to read and learn about.

Goal

I remain open minded as I explore viable options or alternative approaches, like when I

I feel I need to be working more on this as not only in English but other classes will help me succeed as with problems there is always a different way to solve it. Always another way to get through it, but it might take a little longer to achieve the goal in the end.

Natural Selection Critical Thinking Self-Assessment

· I demonstrated that I can collect and analyze evidence when I documented how much prey was caught in the different environments.

· I demonstrated that I can connect evidence I collected to big ideas when I am demonstrating how natural selection occurs in wildlife by doing this lab.

· I demonstrated that I can make predictions based on evidence when I can calculate a percentage on how many prey are surviving in each environment. Each number will help me predict what will happen to future generations of this prey.

Core Competency Reflection

For my artifact I chose my Unit 4 conversation I did in partners with Marko Andjelic

I can statements:

I can form new ideas to create new things. – I chose this one because as soon as we created an idea for our conversation we just kept building it up into a whole scenario.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements. – I chose this one because we had to use certain vocab words for full marks and had to figure out where to put in the words and make them flow with the rest of the conversation.

I consider more than one way to proceed in an investigation. – I chose this one because since Marko was working with me he also had his own ideas on how the conversation should go. What we should talk about, what’s the scenery, are we doing and activity etc. This had me think of the multiple ways we could write the converstaion.

I can reflect on my thinking. – I chose this one because I had to go through our vocab worksheets to find words to fill the sentences which involved a lot of thinking and seeing does this makes sense, did I conjugate this right. We also had to do some review to make sure we were pronouncing the words correctly.

My Goal

I can persevere over time to develop my ideas, and I expect setbacks and failure, but use that to develop my ideas.

I’m going to work on this for my future because there is always going to be setbacks in not only school but the rest of life and learning how to deal with it will really benefit me. It will help me grow and become more stable minded and not be so defeated every time I come into failure or a minor set back.

Equation of my Parabola

(Equation of Original Parabola)

(My parabola is in Red the Original parabola y=x^2 is in Blue)

The Differences of Each Parabola

The (A) value or in my equation 4, decides if the parabola opens up or down. If its is positive the parabola will open up but if its negative it will open down. The (A) value will also create the width of the parabola since 4 is a whole number it makes the parabola narrow. The smaller the number the wider your parabola will be but the bigger your number the skinnier your number will be. My equation has a greater number which makes the parabola skinnier but the original equation has a smaller number making it a wider parabola.

The (H) value in my equation -3 represents the horizontal (how far left or right) the vertex will be on the X axis. The vertex is (3,-6) and putting it into vertex form changes the sign of X so 3 becomes -3. What makes this different then the original y=x^2 is the H changes how far left or right the axis of symmetry will be. It goes over 3 but in the y=x^2 it doesn’t shift at all so it stays at 0.

The (K) value in my equation represents how far vertically or (up and down) the vertex will be. The -6 in (3,-6) is the y value so its showing the vertical axis of the vertex. The difference between the original equation and my equation is it doesn’t have a K value so it does not move up or down meaning its just 0.

Self-Assessment

Give an example from this assignment where you represented the same mathematical idea in three different ways?

First I wrote what my equation is, I then graphed that equation using Desmos to create a visual representation. Lastly I explained the parts of my equation and how each value is used on a graph to make easier to understand what your looking at.

Give an example from this assignment where you used mathematical vocabulary to demonstrate your understanding.

“The (H) value in my equation -3 represents the horizontal how far left or right the vertex will be on the X axis.”

Give an example from this assignment where you used formatting to share the information in a clear and organized way.

To give a visual representation of my equation I used Desmos to help graph my equation and the original equation to better show the differences between both parabolas. By color coding them made it easier to show both separately on the same graph.
