Linear Equations
Example.1
2x-3y=12
This is a linear equation. I can tell from the graph because it is a straight line. I can tell from the equation because it has no powers.
Example. 2
y-3=4 (x+1)
This is a linear equation. The graph is showing a straight line meaning it is a linear equation. The equation is showing me it is a linear equation because it has no powers or exponents in it.
Non Linear
Example.1
x2 + y2 = 16
This is a non linear equation. I can tell from the graph because it is not a straight line. I can tell from the equation because the x and y are being squared making it non linear.
Example.2
y=2x
This is a non linear equation. I can tell from the graph because it is a curved line. I can tell from the equation because there is an exponent x over the 2.
Self Assesment
I explored mathematical ideas with technology when I used the website Desmos to create graphing diagrams with my equations.
I analyzed data and used criteria to draw conclusion when I figured out if the equations were linear or non linear.
I justified my evidence with conclusions when I gave reasoning as to why they were linear or non linear equations.
