My Most Memorable Food Experience

My favourite food experience is when I went to visit my great aunt and uncle in Port Alberni, it was mid summer when I went to visit their home. The first thing I noticed was the smell coming from their backyard, it was something I’ve never smelt before. I asked what the smell was and so my great aunt and uncle lead me to their backyard and showed me the smoke house. in my culture one of the main foods we eat is called upsqwee, in English I would best describe it as being similar in texture, taste, and smell to salmon jerky. To me they’re very different, once you’ve had the traditional way you can never settle for anything less. this meal stands out to me because I really enjoy learning and trying things of my culture, specially with my relatives. Upsqwee is very thinly sliced salmon hung over cedar sticks smoked in a smoke house; it takes 3 days for it to smoke completely. Upsqwee texture is kind of hard and rips easy, it smells richly of salmon but not in a fishy way, its super flavourful and rich, you can’t eat a lot at once because of how rich in flavour it is. Upsqwee has jagged sides but not sharp, almost bumpy id say, the flat side is has bumps from being hung on cedar sticks but the surface is still pretty smooth.
