Physics 11 Core Competency Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

In Physics class, I demonstrated my ability to analyze evidence and make judgements. One of our labs required my group of 7 to measure the time it takes for the “walker” to reach certain distances at slow, medium, and fast velocities. Using this information, we were asked to make a position vs. time graph to compare the three different velocities. Originally, I decided to make the increments on the X-axis four instead of three, but when I graphed the lines, they didn’t occupy a lot of the page. While it is more difficult to graph points when the increments are three and each little line represents 0.3, they filled up more of the page.

Next time, I would also change the increments on the Y-axis. Since the points are all whole numbers increasing by 5 (up to 25), we do not necessarily have to worry about how much each little line represents. Instead of making two large lines equal 5, I could have made three large lines equal 5, so that 25 is at the very top of the graph, minimizing the empty space.
