Chemistry 12 Lab Reflection

I used evidence to make judgements or decisions as demonstrated in lab 19C using the data provided to determine whether or not a precipitate is formed at room temperature. For the first couple of test tubes, the volume of the acid was high and there was little to no water used to dilute the acid. The more test tubes we used, the more water we poured into the test tubes. I noticed that the precipitates were getting lighter and lighter the further we went down the test tube rack, meaning that after there was a small precipitate formed (the tube in the picture above), the following test tubes would not form a precipitate. I demonstrated my understanding of the lab by making sure that the data I collected correlated with the information on the data table.

Law Studies Inquiry Reflection

About the Activity

For this project, we had to do research based on an inquiry question related to Law. My inquiry question was “Can Canada benefit from implementing Norway’s Prison System”. Based on the research, I found that we could definitely benefit since Norway had a low recidivism (recommitting a crime after being released from prison) rate, but because Norway spends triple the amount per prisoner than Canada, it would be too expensive. Doing the project was fun since it allowed me to do research on something I was interested in. I tend to struggle with putting effort into things I don’t find interesting, but when I did this project, I worked hard to find lots of information.

Core-Competency Reflection

I can understand and share information about a topic of interest in a clear, organized way.
I chose this one because I presented my work using a PowerPoint, and I had multiple slides showcasing sub questions/data so that people would understand what I am talking about.

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.
Some of my sub questions were opinion based, meaning I had to make judgements depending on the information I read.

I can deliberately learn about things that interest me, and new ideas pop into my head.
While reading information related to my inquiry, some sub questions popped into my head, which I tried digging into for my presentation. One of those sub questions was “How would Canadians react to a change in the prison system”.

I can develop a body of creative work over time.
I’ve wanted to work on being creative for a while now, especially when it comes to presentations. I always felt like my presentations never stood out due to them being quite basic. I think this is because I work harder on making my organization simple to understand and making sure that there is lots of info to read rather than make it stand out. To get more creative, I should try to think outside of the box and make sure that my presentation looks unique and stands out rather than being simple.

Life Saving Measures

For the past couple of days in PE, we have been learning about things that could save our lives. One of the things we learned about was Naloxone. Naloxone reverses the affects of an opioid overdose temporarily. Before the presentation, I knew nothing about Naloxone, and what it did. We learned a lot from the presentation, including how drugs are the leading causes of death from a young age range. I think it’s important to get a naloxone kit at home, since you never know when you’ll have to need it. We also had a quick refresher on CPR, and I actually learned some things I didn’t know about. I learned about the ABC’s of CPR (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation). Learning about CPR is one of the most crucial things that we learn in high school, since it can save someone’s life. People can have a cardiac arrest anywhere, and without knowing how to do CPR, it can make a difference on life or death. Learning that so much people are dying from overdoses daily opened my eyes on just how bad drugs are getting, and I hope people will start to buy naloxones more to save others.

Critical and Reflective Thinking Reflection

I can analyze evidence to make judgements.

This statement applies to me because I used the evidence I heard to make judgements about the stigma related to drugs. When I heard all the evidence, some of the things I heard changed how I looked at drugs. There’s so much more to it that I didn’t know, but I’m glad I learned about all of those facts. Like I stated above, it opened my eyes on the bad influence that drugs are having, and gave me a new outlook as well.

CHEM 11 Self-Assessment

Critical and Reflective Thinking

The artifact I chose was the lab where we made a solution. I displayed Critical and Reflective Thinking in this assignment by reflecting on my own thoughts, allowing me to make progres throughout the assignment. When I place my work / thinking in a broader context, I can describe implications and/or next steps. For example, I was working on this alone because I was not able to do it due to being sick. I had to create the steps to make a solution myself and used the information that I used to study in order to do so. One core-competency I would like to improve on is my creative thinking. While it is a competenncy that isn’t as needed in labs, I would still like to work on it so I can answer written questions with more depth and detail.

Art Studio Competency Reflection

Creative Thinking

The artifact I chose was my final work of art that I worked on for a couple of weeks. I displayed Creative Thinking by continually thinking about my concept for my project and coming up with new ideas while I coloured and sketched the general layout. I had several challenges, such as my pen not being responsive, but I used those challenges to come up with a better concept for how I was going to apply the memories. One competency I would like to improve on is Critical Thinking. Instead of believing there was nothing more to add after I completed colouring, I should have asked for feedback on my piece of art and reflected on what I could have done. Looking at other people’s work of art made me realize this, but overall I’m proud of my work of art.
