R3 – Japanese Mascots

http://wandertokyo.com/fukkachan/

Fukkachan is a mascot from Fukaya city in the Saitama Prefecture. When I searched for Japanese mascots, Fukkachan caught my attention immediately. Fukkachan’s design is very colorful and I just love its design. I believe Fukkachan is popular because of its unique design and cuteness.

One big difference between the mascots in Japan and the mascots in Canada are the animals themselves and the designs. In Canada, we often see beaver, moose, and bear mascots that wear clothes such as shirts and jerseys. The mascots in Japan arrange from all different types of animals, objects, plants, creatures, food, etc. They tend to be more colorful, bold, and creative than Canadian mascots. We see how entertainment and culture differentiate between countries, and we also see how lame and uncanny western mascots are.

I think mascots in Japan are bigger than in Canada because they are heavily promoted and their uniqueness and cultural connections make them popular among people. There are many unique mascots that you can find whereas the mascots aren’t really that distinctive in Canada.

This is the mascot for Coquitlam that I chose to create. I decided on this because it’s always raining here like I’m tired of looking on the weather app and seeing a ‘Rainfall Warning’ that lasts weeks…
