Graphic Novel Adaptation

My Reflection

Tim Burton, in Edward Scissorhands, used the hold me scene in order to show the hardships that Edward must face if he is going to stay in the town. Edward felt as though he was starting to fit in, but as the movie progressed, he starts to realize that he is never going to fit in. In this scene Edward tries to hug Kim but Edward was unable to due to his hands. The music started to slow down to show that Edward felt defeated because he was unable to do what Kim had asked him to. At this moment Edward realized that he couldn’t continue to live in the town because he would never be “normal”. Kim was able to pick up on the way Edward felt so came over to him and hugged him. She tried to show Edward that although he may never be perfect, in her eyes he was perfect. Once Kim hugged Edward the music changed to be more romantic. This allowed the viewer to understand the importance of Kim being there for Edward. I was able to feel a strong connection to Edward and understand what he was feeling during the embrace.

For example, in my own interpretation, I kept the part where the camera zooms in on Edward while he’s hugging Kim because his eyes are open showing that he is deep in thought. Edward was thinking about the future and what his next move was. At this point Edward knew he couldn’t stay in the town. I know this because the music started to get louder and less romantic showing that he was anxious about what would happen after. This adaptation from film to visual novel taught me how important music is to a movie. If there was no music or sounds in Edward Scissorhands, then the viewers wouldn’t be able to connect with the characters. The music was able to manipulate the way the viewers felt to help form a deep connection with the characters. For example, when the music got louder and faster the view felt panicked. This allows the viewer to infer about what would happen next, which leaves the viewer interested in the movie.

My Model Town

Creating a Model Factory Town

Name of the town: Whitebridge

Company name: Whitebridge Mill

Resources available: Water, wheat, cotton, oats, vegetables, coal, and fish.

Elements of the town: Uses water as its main energy source, flat land, and rich soil for farming

Population: 1,380

Explanation / Brief History: In the early 1800s a man named Alex Whitbridge wanted to create a factory town. He set off to find the perfect piece of land to build the town, he stubbled across this beautiful piece of land that was surrounded by mountains and water. He knew that this was where he was going to build his town. he wanted to make it the best factory town out there, so he made this elaborate plan. In this plan he made sure to use the resources around him. He used the water at the main source of energy because there was so much of it. He knew that he needed a back up so he used the coal that they were able to mine. In the end Alex had one of the most successful factories in the world.

Media Fluency Reflection

A. How was the ease of access in building the town, despite this being a very super basic software?

The software was very easy to use and understand. The instructions on the website were super simple and easy to follow. I had a really easy time when moving the pieces around and creating the whole town.

B. Were you able to apply the skills you learned in the planning stages appropriately to a digital environment?

Yes, I was able to apply the skills that we learned in the planning stages to a digital environment with ease. All the skills that we learned in the planning stages were very useful when we needed to use them in a digital environment.

C. What were the sources you researched that made this an “authentic make-believe” town?

I used Lyddie quite a bit in order to make the town. I mainly used what was said in the books about boarding houses and the factories to create this town. I found it to be a fun challenge trying to take what was said in the text and make it real life.

D. Is there other software online that could have done the job better? Explain.

I feel like there are so many different software’s to use , but I personally like this one quite a bit because of how simple it was. I found it super easy to use and in the end it created a great project.

About Me

My Bio

Hi, my name is Ashlyn. I am quite shy when you first meet me but when I start to become comfortable around you I am very talkative. Some words that describe me are outgoing, logical and hardworking. I think these words describe me well because I like trying new things and will put my all into them. I tend to learn best when I work independently but I always enjoy group projects. My biggest stretch when learning is that I always procrastinate on work. One of my strengths as a learner is that I always complete work to the best of my ability. I never give up on my work and will do it until its done. The best ways to show you what I know are by writing or creating chart/diagrams. When I am having a difficult time with something I usually take a short break to regroup then try again, if I am still having trouble then I will ask for help.

My Favourite Website

http://theessentialsclub.com/blog-posts/bucket-hat

This website is a sewing pattern and video tutorial for a bucket hat. This is my favourite website because I enjoy creating new things using a sewing machine. I have used this pattern many times meaning I am always on this website.

My Favourite Video

My favourite video is a song called Golden by Harry Styles. This song/video is connected to my goal because I tend to procrastinate on my school work. When I am doing school work I focus better when I have music on in the background. The song Golden is super upbeat which motivates me to do work.

My Favourite Image

This is my favourite picture because this pose took a lot of team work and planning. When I see this picture it reminds me that anything is possible because it took so much time and effort in doing this pose. It was the last class of aerial silks that I had until the ending of the dance year. I had so much fun that class and it stood out to me as one the best times I’ve had in dance.

My Favourite Quote

“All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” – Walt Disney.

I find this quote very inspirational because it reminds me that anything is possible as long as you put in the work. When I was younger I would always give up on math homework, I would throw temper tantrums. Looking back on it now I could’ve handled it so much better. Instead of getting upset I should’ve taken a break and tired again. I know now that if I continue trying that I can do almost anything I set my mind to.
